Has anyone noticed that statistics are getting more and more washed?

I saw some homeless statistics, that stated “55% male” and “45% female”, and that 81.7% of the increase was contributed by females.

Anyone who has walked down any street, paying attention, would notice that the homeless ratio is at least 3:1 male:female. So I looked it up. As it turns out, they just changed the definition of homeless to include:

  • people living in improvised dwellings, tents or sleeping out

  • people living in supported accommodation for the homeless

  • people staying temporarily with other households

  • people living in boarding houses

  • people in other temporary lodgings

  • people living in ‘severely’ crowded dwellings

So, as it turns out, homeless no longer means on the street. It includes residential college students, people staying with friends and people living with lots of roommates.

I have noticed this trend in a lot of other areas. When statistics point to men being disproportionately affected, the definition of the experience being measured, is conveniently changed.
