I've been saving up money for a situation where if the economy goes to shit and the tax rates are to the point where all my income only goes to living expenses and taxes, I'm dropping out from the rat-race. If I'm not saving at least $12,000 each year or more after taxes, or if i'm paying more in taxes than I'm able to save, what's the fucking point of staying in it? Anyone who has $100k+ in savings can live somewhere cheap and probably survive for a good few years until the market and tax rates adjust to better levels. Especially if they use that time out of the rat-race to learn to save money on food.
Some places you can probably survive off of $1500 a month easy. That's 5 years of retirement saved up if you have 100k. 200k and that's a decade if inflation doesn't eat it all up. Doesn't sound so bad thinking about it now.
Sometimes the best way to get the government to change their ways is to starve the beast. The rich will use tax shelters, the working class will hide their income or drop out entirely. The poor will wonder where all the free stuff went. The politicians will point the finger at 'X' while trying to remain relevant.
