Hashtag-badass babes are a sex-swapped caricature of a caricature of male power.

The equivalent caricature-of-a-caricature would be a version of The Girl Can't Help It with a man playing the Jayne man-oh-man-Mansfield role. Men wielding the sexual power of women. That's plausible in the blank slate world, we just need inspiring role models for boys.

This notion that there must be a "role model" to be latched onto seems alien to me. In all the fiction I've consumed whether visual or print I've tended to inject myself as a fly on the wall.

Ripley doesn't count to them since her character was originally conceived as male and then changed. Additionally, she displays "Male Characteristics" (ie acting male).

EDIT: Let me clarify for the downvoters: I am presenting the argument our opposing side throws in our face when turning the subject to the character of Ripley. I don't support it, for christ sake!

Tayla from Stargate Atlantis was a better, more developed and interesting character than wonder woman. She was also quite badass and knew how to fight.

People don't care what gender the person in a movie is, they just want to see a good movie with a character that kicks ass.
