/r/BashLadies? You got me really excited for a second. I thought it was a subreddit devoted to women who really love the bash shell.

Never saw much misogyny here even before a random Reddit user decided to nominate it. Also never really cared that it was nominated since anyone could nominate anything.
Fun that you apologized, now how about some egalitarianism instead of all this finger pointing.
[–]rmbarnes 21 points22 points23 points 16 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Your post comes across as very condescending and patronising. Although misogyny is bad, we don't need a nice little pat on the head for not being misogynistic.
Secondly, and I think this is an important point:
blatantly misogynist/anti-feminist trash
Anti-feminist != misogyny. Hating an entire group of people based on the hand that biology dealt to them (misogyny) is not the same as hating an ideology (feminism).
You're probably thinking of telling me that the feminist ideology is about equality for women, so hating it equates to hating women because you must think them unequal to men. The thing is, feminism hasn't been about equality for women for quite some time. Feminists lost sight of what equality is quite some time ago (and there are some women who were ardent feminists in the 60s and 70s who have been saying this).
Feminism today is at best about parity for women, and at worst about women having rights and privileges that exceed those which men have. I disagree with that, and so I am anti-feminist without being a misogynist.

None of the blatantly misogynist/anti-feminist trash.
Don't you see, the two are basically the same.
When we attack a movement that's been border-lining on a hate movement against men for half a century, we're actually being sexist.
Everyone knows that the only route to equality is to fight the patriarchy, this usually entails attacking men indiscriminately, but we just need to understand that we'll be better off in the long run.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It is definitely there especially if you read articles before they hit most of their views.
Usually the first couple of hours of an article is watered down in misogyny, and then after the bulk of people read an article the crazy shit gets down voted and either shouted down or replaced with something more insightful.

You ever hear that saying - it only takes one bad apple....? I think the other way works too - It only takes a few people, demonstrating respect, setting an example, to inspire a whole bunch more.
A few people at a time, make the difference.
And that's truly what it's going to take, to make changes for better equity. It's going to take patience and respect and tenacity and truthfulness, and never settling for "that's the way it's always been."
[–]etherspirit 2 points3 points4 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Anti-feminism is not misogyny. Just to reiterate.
Misogyny has never been a serious issue here, and I've been around for more than a year. There are the occasional comments, but no more so than the rest of reddit or life, and they are reacted to in much the same way too.
The people who nominated this as "Worst Subreddit of 2009" (and failed miserably) were butt-hurt feminists.
[–]Mitchellonfire 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
I still see a lot of misogyny about. I get horribly downvoted for saying things along the lines of maybe we shouldn't compare feminists to nazis. But there is less of the hyperbole. It's still there, but in less number. We still can't be taken seriously as a movement till it's weeded out.

Also, it may be time to drop the term feminazi
The thing is, when applied to radical feminists this term is very fair. Radical feminists often want things like reducing the male population down to 10%... I think comparing people like that to Nazis is very fair.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Radical feminists often want things like reducing the male population down to 10%
Congratulations. You have been awarded creative prejudice of the day! Seriously, what world are you living in? Where do you receive your information? That statement is utterly and completely wrong. I'd be surprised if you could find one single feminist on the planet who wants to reduce the male population at all.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Interesting. Lets see what you got here.
Here's Miller's uniquely gendered solution to over-population: "The proportion of men must be reduced to and maintained at approximately 10% of the human race."
I have never heard of this woman before but evidently that quote comes from an article in a book called "Reweaving the Web of Life: Feminism and Nonviolence". Have you read it or are you just copy pasting from some antifeminist propaganda? Considering most of the stuff I encountered when Googling this quote, it does seem much more popular among anti-feminists/MRAs than feminists. From my googlings it also appears that she belongs to a fairly small branch of feminism usually called Ecofeminism which you can read more about here. This quote could be an accurate example of what you are trying to prove, but I'd have to see it in context to be sure. And even if it is, it is clearly not popular, nor something "many" feminists would agree on.
"If life is to survive on this planet, there must be a decontamination of the Earth. I think this process will be accompanied by an evolutionary process that will result in a drastic reduction of the population of males."
This doesnt say that she wants the male population to be reduced by human force. It says she thinks that may happen as an evolutionary process because of the harm males (according to her) is doing to the environment. It's comparable to Marx hypothesis that eventually capitalism will break down and the working class will take over. That didn't mean that Marx wanted to kill rich people, it meant "keep doing bad stuff and karma will get you" (not that he'd ever use that word, I'm just trying to explain). Interestingly enough this quote also seems to be a direct comment on Gearhart's quote. Which makes me wonder if Gearharts quote in its actual context would have the same meaning it appears to here, or if its more like "ecological balance will not return to earth unless...".
Valerie Solanas is another female supremacist.
No. She was a mentally ill artist who was fueled by rage of what men had done to her. And even Wikipedia states that the SCUM Manifesto was never meant to be taken literally
While you managed to find some interesting quotes, they do not do much to substantiate your claim that "Radical feminists often want things like reducing the male population down to 10%". "Often" would assume that there is some kind of consensus about it. And Gearhart and Daly seem to be ecofeminists, not radical feminists. What we can conclude from them is that some feminists sometimes formulate themselves in a way that is over-generalizing and offensive, at least when taken out of context. But that is true for all ideologies, and it does not justify comparing them to nazis.
I also have a question for you. Do you like to compare feminists to nazis because a) you actually have a fear of being exterminated or is it b) mainly just to make feminism look bad?
[+][deleted] 16 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Careful with your quote attribution there.
Oh shit, I thought i was replying to the same person. My bad. But all the same, you were posting to support his argument, were you not? So maybe it doesn't make such a big difference.
You claimed his statement was utterly and completely wrong. Clearly it is not.
I don't think you can reasonably generalize from these examples to conclude that "Radical feminists often want things like reducing the male population down to 10%".
These are your radical feminists.
No, those are ecofeminists. You do know there are different feminisms right? And that radical feminism is one of them?
Now, for balance, how about you go out and find any MRA anywhere throughout the history of time who has advocated diminishing the female population
I don't think any MRAs want that so I don't see any reason why I would try to prove that they do.
I'd go on rebutting you but I really don't care to.
Why don't you just answer my last question then. Are you afraid of getting exterminated?

Get real.
Despite your lack of knowledge and denial, these women were and are lauded as matriarchs of the feminist movement. Hell, Valerie Solanas was just lauded on a blogpost on Feministing about two months ago.
If you did some objective research on the subject, you would find quite a few of these quotes. Until you learn "your" history, your argument holds no weight.

Threads like this make me realise that Reddit/r/mensrights gets more feminists viewing and voting on the posts/comments than it does men.
Sorry folks, feminists are only allowed to do what they are doing to us because the mass of ordinary women happily franchise them - through voting for them, for buying the media that propagates their misandrist viewpoints etc.
Men are entitled to be angry, and when women change how they behave, I'll be happy to stop making 'misogynist' comments.
I am proud to declare myself an anti-feminist, feminism is nothing more than a sexual trade union catering for the clearly more primitive needs and obsessions of ordinary women. People who think we can ever get feminists to be reasonable or even to notice us by conducting witchhunts to 'root out misogynists' are living in la la land.

I nominate a new rule. We disregard the comment of a poster who cannot make the distinction between "your" and "you're". So far it's worked well for me. Generally speaking, anyone that doesn't care enough to learn such a basic distinction shows just as much care in almost every other aspect of conversation.

My point still stands. If you were so distracted as to temporarily forget how to properly use the word "you're" then how could you possibly be in a fit state to comment on the material?
I confess, the inability to use "your", "you're", "there", "they're" and "their" is a pet peeve of mine; though I also took offence with your characterisation of this subreddit.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 16 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Your confession is completely unnecessary, given this is the third exchange we've had arguing about how completely broken I am as a human being given my propensity for typos and your willingness to dedicate your life to highlighting them.
Thank you, Gareth. I figure you've spent about an hour, give or take, talking about my idiotic-- and truly subpar-- little brain. You've found a single chink in my armor, and like a fractal, zoomed in on it revealing my complete inability to comment or make an informed decision on anything.
Why, oh why? Why don't I proof my Internet comments with veracity? When they are finally collected together in my posthumously published letters, won't I be rolling in my grave?
I'm glad you have. I'm guessing, you've dedicated about an hour to this already.

Communism, in its most basic, idealistic form, is equality. Dismissing someone based on their belief in feminism is NOT sexism, as belief in an ism on either side of the divide is sexism in and of itself.
The scales will never balance. Check out /r/science on the laws of entropy for extended explanation. Change is constant. The same reason I think practicing feminists are full of excrement is the same reason many feminists think I lived a life full of privilege. The grass is greener elsewhere, and we identify a group different than us getting a benefit we don't.
Any view put into motion is radical, because it creates a change.

dismissing someone based on their advocating men's rights
as i have to keep telling you people, feminism has been border-lining on a hate movmeent agaimst men for half a century now.
The notion that feminism is the opposite of men's rights is not to be humoured.
Being anti feminist does not mean being anti women's rights.
Being a feminist does usually mean being anti male.
If you believe a man criticising feminism is sexist then you probably are sexist.
[–]kragshot 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
The problem here is that your definition of feminism does not jibe with the "feminism" that is being put out into the mainstream and what is being put out by other factions of your movement.
I will say this as many times as it needs to be said; if you truly believe that feminism is about true equality, then you need to take back your movement from those who have hijacked it and turned it into a move for matriarchal dominance and male oppression. Because that is what it has become equated with, which is evidenced by the injustices in the family court system, the MSM, and the criminal courts in regards to false rape accusations.
"Idealized feminism" as you put it is not what is being promoted in the mainstream. Especially when your most public faces are racist women like Jessica Valenti, your iconic figures are no longer people like Gloria Steinem, but mentally-ill women like Valerie Solanas, and concepts like "Schrodinger's Rapist," are lauded as landmark thinking by key members of your movement, rather than Sojurner Truth's "Ain't I A Woman."
Some "alleged feminists" ask us to understand the "rage" that some feminists have towards men and accept it as a path to understanding your path. You should do the same in regards to some of our "angry men," in an attempt to understanding destination where our paths have taken us.
(edited for spelling and grammar)
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 16 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
that implies you think women do not deserve to pursue equality - and yes, that's sexism.
so what you're saying is that if you're anti feminist you're sexist.
Do you also believe that if you're anti peta you hate animals?
Or that if you would criticise israel then you must be anti-semitic.
Feminism is no less insane.
Feminism in its most basic, idealistic form, is for equality.
Feminists say this a lot but it's not really the case.
On what basis do you ground this declaration, because we say so?
Your irritation likely stems from being subjected to more radical feminist views.
no it comes from "moderate feminists" who believe the same shit as the radicals but pretend to be different.
By trying to frame sexism as defamation of feminism you're certainly little more sophisticated in you thinking then the average radical.
