I don't like the idea that the instruction seems oriented just for "young girls," according to the article. I don't have an issue with the teaching of home economics, but courses like these should be open to whoever decides to take them, male or female.

A couple of things

1.) social etiquette and learning how to dress and groom adequately is something all young people can benefit from in principle and boys seem to need it more than girls in my experience. Hell if all men were taught how to hold a conversation and dress smart, trp wouldn't be half the size it is.

2.) Unfortunately most public schools don't have the funds for this but if the pupils in question go to a private school they are more likely to need these skills anyway since they come from mostly rich families - one might say this is a waste of time for the working class but if you are to go into higher positions that's not a bad idea

3.) Parents don't seem to be teaching their kids these things anymore and it is apparently a problem so big that my university made etiquette training mandatory for all students in their dual study program (where you are sponored by and working for a company while earning your degree). Apparently many employers had complained about the complete lack of knowlege on adequate behavior displaid by engineering and business students alike when they enter management positions (especially when it comes to social functions like company dinners etc.but also in the general business with clients)

Now I don't think school is necessarily the right place to teach that since its already really busy and the kids are young but I really liked those classes in college tbh and I have found them very useful (also surprisingly fun and with great food etc.)

I think it makes no sense to limit it to girls though - boys are the one who need it most imo

It would probably have a great deal of benefit in our class-based society, for anyone looking to mobilize upwards. It sounds a bit dumb, and something that you should learn anyway but with the access to information we have now, such a course could probably do wonderful things for a person in the long-term.

I think boys and girls should have this. I took some social skills courses in college as part of the career center but they should've been introduced earlier imo.

it's good that it's optional, though hopefully no girls who don't want to be there get pressured into going. some people care about learning or promoting those kinds of things and will focus on them, with or without this class. i don't think it should be mandatory or that all girls need it, but i don't care that it exists.

I went to school in the era when girls in middle school took home ec and boys took shop, it was not optional. I found it boring because my mom was already teaching me how to cook and hem a pair of pants and darn socks and a few other things. The course is optional and it is probably a private school.

Learning how to have a conversation and communicate hardly sounds oppressive. I have often thought kids should learn personal budgeting in high school, that was another not optional skill I got at home.

My mom made me go to an etiquette class. I guess she thought her instruction wasn't enough for me. What can it hurt? I mean most people are pretty lacking in manners and one thing I can say is that because of it I feel pretty comfortable in almost all social situations. I don't recall at the time being pissed that my brothers didn't have to attend. But they had other expectations placed on them that I didn't have.

(I'm currently staying in a hotel room with two gfs. You think I want to wash my face using the sink that still has their toothpaste globs in it? No. Ugh. It's so rude to leave a mess for others to wade through. You get to see just how bad people's manners are)

It says this one is optional so what can it hurt.

This is my problem. Of course being a pretty feminine girl will net you privilege. The only issue is not admitting that this only due to the male gaze. Otherwise femininity is not important
