Actually a really good article. Men's mental health is a ~~largely~~ completely ignored part of our society and is a major factor in areas like this. Mentioning whatever percentage of female killers adds nothing to the issue and only distracts from the problem.

I think as a whole, the article is pretty good. It brings up the facts about how men are conditioned to be a certain way and degraded for acting differently. Although it is a tragic thing that happened, we have no idea why it happened, and there really is no drive in society to figure this out. "Manhood is an emotional prison" is right on the nose.

The comments section, on the other hand...Yikes.

It's great that he addresses mens health, but he makes a pretty huge assumption that this tragedy had something to do with masculinity. There is literally no evidence of this, but now people will believe it now because an "expert" told them it is true.

What all of these discussions examining and criticizing masculinity completely ignore is the simple fact that men did not create masculinity. Women did through the process of mate selection. The most masculine males are, and have always been, chosen by women to breed with. So lets take a deep breath and stop looking at one another for answers as to why we can't talk about our feelings. The reason we can't talk about our feelings is because women don't want us to. Don't buy into that tired feminist lie that men are the architects and creators of our own prison of masculinity. They built this jail cell and they man the walls. Our masculinity is being policed and if you think other men are the guards then you're wrong.

I believe football was shown as the reason that at least one ex football player killed himself. How was football to blame? It caused him head injuries that messed up his brain in a specific way that caused a disorder linked to suicidal depression. I think the US would be better off playing more normal football (soccer) instead of American football. Another reason besides injuries and death, is that it perpetuates the social expectation that men need to display dangerous, risk-taking behavior to be rewarded by women and society. There's a really good intelligence squared US debate (for free--google it) on whether or not college football should be banned.

I may be the only one here who was never a fan of the footballers. there's definitely an intensification in football teams of the hit-em-hard, take no prisoners attitude. For this, I don't blame manhood as much as I blame the competitive culture.
