White knighting is unhealthy all around. While it's good to have compassion for your fellow human being (of both sexes) and to be the kind of person willing to work with other people as a team (helping each other out when we can,) there comes a point where you have to draw the line, or you end up being used and abused... and being an enabler.

Giving women the benefit of special treatment as a rule instead of giving people treatment that recognizes and reciprocates kindness they've offered you (or at least demonstrated the capacity and tendency to offer) is basically a "walk all over me" license. And giving any group of people a "walk all over me" license creates dependency, self-and-other-damaging carelessness, and put-on helplessness among that group... in effect, when you white knight, you're hurting yourself, and the people you think you're helping.

I'm not saying don't stand by your friends... that's something friends do for each other, and you should be able to do that and expect to see the favor returned. It's when you can't expect that - then you know you're being used. In that sense, I'm saying don't let people use you as a shield and a doormat.

The smart response is to develop more of a balance. It's not that you should not hit just women; don't hit anybody who isn't physically attacking you. Instead of just being nice and polite to women, be nice and polite to others who appreciate it (appreciation entails some manner of apparent gratitude,) and merely civil to those who don't. Don't let women use you to excuse themselves for wimping out, lazing out, or crazing out. Don't let women trick you into automatically fighting their battles for them.

Having grown up in a household of abusive and violent females and passive males, the chivalry delusion fortunately never caught me. I'm totally immune to any demands to give women special protection/privilege/respect/courtesy.

Normally I wouldn't be saying this, but since you're just new to the whole Men's Rights thing, I think you might be saying this because of backlash:

The problem with the majority of feminists isn't that they're greedy, selfish people who want rights all to themselves. The problem is that they're just very... oblivious, and closed-minded. They don't ignore sexism against men because they don't care about men, they ignore it because they genuinely don't acknowledge it exists and they won't listen to anyone who says otherwise.

I was raised in a similar manner as you. Ladies first, pull out the chair for them, hold doors for them, etc.

What I've found is that the a good percentage of women (at least down here in south Georgia) still appreciate being treated like a lady. I wont stop doing what I'm doing simply because some women may not appreciate it.

Hi, I'm a feminist who follows this subreddit and also supports men's rights. Thanks for sharing, although I think it 'isn't fair' to stereotype all feminists and villianize them. It is very counterproductive and really discourages feminists like myself from being a part of this dialogue. Let's focus on supporting men's rights rather than bashing feminists, yeah?

I suggest reading a book called "No more Mr. Nice Guy" by Dr. Robert Glover, it looks into the psychology behind men who take on these kinds of behaviours and has exercises so you can get your way out.

OP, may I recommend that you Google "Hugo Schwyzer" and then look at "his fall" from being a male feminist icon to just another man.

Then Google "Tom Matlack" and his falling out with feminism.

Both of these men were at one time, feminist allies until they did or said something that some feminists didn't like. In Schwyzer's case, he attempted to rationalize "facials" and Matlack questioned feminism regarding the fact that the movement wants to "make men into what they want," rather accept men as they are.

Finally, I have one more piece of homework for you Grasshopper; David Futrelle AKA Manboobz. Google him, go to his blog, and figure out what is wrong with him. When you figure it out, you will be ready to snatch the pebble from my hand, leave the MRM temple, and go forth into the world.
