Why can girls comment on every picture of a guy "r/ladyboners is that way ;)" or similar, but when a guy even says a girl is attractive on reddit, he's a creeper/whiteknight/'neckbeard virgin'?

If women express their sexuality, they're "liberated" and "fighting the patriarchy." If a man does the same, he's "invoking privilege," "objectifying women" or "being oppressive."

[–]pcarvious 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It may also be seen as how men and women are sexually viewed. Men sexually are.seen as always seeking it. Therefore, he is just getting what he asked for. Women that put themselves on display are doing it because of some kind of external pressure. By posting they're caving to this pressure and men are lapping it up and encouraging it.

That's how I see the argument going at least.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Interestingly this isn't how it was always seen. Before the 19th Century it men were seen as being vulnerable to women's seductive ways, and it was women who were more sexually driven.

[–]pcarvious 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm just thinking about cultural.perception.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What is worse is being with a woman and she talks about how other men are hot.

Women just want everything without accountability. Hey, I want new shoes -- better get my child support check, etc.

I honestly don't think women are capable of long-term stability in relationships.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points43 points 13 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

This is just my opinion, but I get the feeling that women are allowed to more freely express their sexuality than men. If a guy appears to be exprssing sexual interest in someone, then it's very likely that he could be labelled a creep or a pervert. I don't think the same can be said for women however, there's a stereotype that they're always innocent and any sexual interest that they show in someone else will be gladly received.

Of course there is the whole slut shaming thing, which I would say affects women more than men, but isnt restricted to women.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points34 points 13 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you. If you want more proof, look at the acceptance of women's pornography and sex toys versus men's: a woman using a vibrator doesn't carry anywhere near the stigma and shame of a man using a fleshlight, and look at the spotlight 50 Shades of Grey has been thrust into. Can you imagine the looks men would get if they were looking at or discussing pornography in public? I think the police might get called.

To your last point, trying to gauge the effects of slut shaming on men is the wrong way to go; men are more victimized by virgin shaming. A man is expected to be successful with women, and if he does not fulfill this requirement he may find himself derided in one of a couple of ways. If he chooses not to participate or is unsuccessful in a harmless manner, he is just a pathetic virgin, while if he is unfortunate enough to screw up badly enough in his attempts to woo, he is labeled as a creep and humiliated even further.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I absolutely agree with your first point about vibrators/fleshlights (just search for 'fleshlight rage', one of my first posts).

I think your second point is spot on as well, though I don't think it is limited to just men, I think men are more affected by it. A guy I know is 22 and still a virgin and it just crushes his confidence, absolutely crushes it and destroys his happiness. He's also gone through being labelled as a creep even though he is a timid and gentle guy.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Ah I remember being that 22 awkward virgin, now at 29 (though no longer a virgin I am still a far cry from a Casanova) I have reached a point where I just don't care anymore.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

One year until you level up to wizardry

[–]typhonblue 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Loosing your virginity doesn't fix anything. Having a supportive partner helps you fix things.

Neither are requirements.

I wish people would start replacing virginity in their minds with 'mountain climbing'. By all measures mountain climbing is a thrilling adventure and an amazing sense of achievement... wait... actually saying that mountain climbing will change you for the better is probably more reasonable then saying losing your virginity will change you for the better.

[–]Darkling5499 10 points11 points12 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

look at freaking "50 shades of grey". women read that EVERYWHERE. and i mean EVERYWHERE, from parks with their kids to the bus to work. if a man was ever caught reading erotica at ANY of those places, he'd be arrested or otherwise in trouble.

[–]Honztastic 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

My problem with slut shaming is that sometimes you should be shamed for the amount of sluttiness you personally acquire.

I think poorly of men who do slutty things. I think poorly of women who do slutty things.

But I've only encountered male-sluts that had the honesty to own up to their actions and not hide behind bullshit quotes from a long-dead celebrity to justify what they do. And I've not met any male-sluts that got upset when you pointed it out. Or felt guilt about it. They've come to terms, and endure the less-than-stellar view people hold of them.

[–]loose-dendrite 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Anectdote: I have met one female slut who was perfectly happy with herself about it. Great energy lacking all the bullshit of pretense.

[–]Honztastic 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well that sounds great.

I've yet to meet one of those.

In this case, he doesn't add anything. he is saying"Men objectifying women is seen as creepy, women objectifying men is ok." Well, duh, we know that. We are asking WHY.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I appear to have 28 upvotes on my original comment. I don't know why it may appear different for you. Something faulty on RES perhaps?

[–]MisterMaggot 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Op, you realize that in 90% of the threads where a hot girl is in the picture the top comment is "Holy shit you are gorgeous." or something to that effect.

[–]Darkling5499 -4 points-3 points-2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

and in 90% of those threads, the OP posted the picture for attention and for garnering EXACTLY those kinds of remarks.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dunno why you're vote ratio is 2:3. What you say has enough factual basis as to be true.

How is this?

If, as MisterMaggot stated, the top comment 90% of the time is in praise of physical appearance, then those who post will recognize this, and those who read the comments will recognize this.

So, if a 'hot girl' posts (or is posted) onto a forum which repeatedly, testably, comments upon the physical appearance of other 'hot girls,' we can say that the OP expected the response and accepted it prior to posting.

If such a response is predictable but not desired, then the OP can alter the post to mitigate such responses. For example, "yu so hot, wuts ur numbr?" comments are not typically found in /r/DIY posts of cabinetry.

[–]Honztastic 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because reddit is a meta circle jerk of almost unlimited magnitude.

First, it was mostly dudes that made sexist jokes for the lulz. Then enough people joined that actual misogynists joined the ranks and made the jokes because they believed them. This rightfully invoked a backlash by moderate members and the growing female population of reddit.

As the population has exploded on here, now there is a misandrist population that makes those same jokes (it's relevant to say there still is a misogynistic population) against men.

But no one calls them on it, because it's too easy to claim we are overreacting in pointing it out. Us recognizing and pointing out sexism, because it's against women, is somehow evidence of how misogynistic we are. And most people don't care enough to point it out.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because Reddit is filled with testosterone apologists.

Yeah I mean look at gone wild, it's not like everyone who comments on those threads is instantly swamped by people shaming them for supporting the patriarchy.

[–]SteelCrossx 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure saying go to gone wild to look is exactly fair. Neither would saying go to lady boners be fair. We should be looking at aww, best of, or other subreddits that aren't focused specifically on displaying attractive people.

[–]typhonblue 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

It's an interesting conundrum. On the one hand men are expected to both be heterosexual and constantly express heterosexual desire(even when they don't want to), yet men are also shamed for being sexually attracted to women because they are 'objectifying' them[1].

[1] I challenge anyone to explain the difference between a man finding a woman sexually attractive and him objectifying her.

[–]Phuzzums 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I think objectifying would be sexual attraction and advances while disregarding the persons comfort. Catcalling I would say mildly objectify the target (male or female) because it puts the person into a public spotlight that most everyone is uncomfortable being put in. Extreme objectification would be actually invading their personal space to the point where they become fearfully uncomfortable and you disregard that discomfort completely.

Sexual attraction, on the other hand, has the same basis as objectification (sexual attraction) but the person who is sexually attracted to the other person has empathy towards that person's level of comfort. They know that making a public scene with catcalls will likely make them uncomfortable. They know that aggressively getting into their personal space or making unwanted physical contact will make them uncomfortable. They instead approach in non-threatening ways and take note of how the person reacts. If they react in a way that makes it seem they are uncomfortable or uninterested in that position then you leave them be

tl;dr: IMO, difference between objectification and sexual attraction depends on the attracted person's level of empathy towards the desired person's level of comfort in the situation.

[–]typhonblue 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Those things are harassment and sexual assault respectively.

'Objectification' is amorphous.

[–]Phuzzums 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Putting myself in the situation, if I'm waiting for a bus and a girl grabs my ass I'd put that under harassment/sexual assault/objectification. If that same girl instead said "excuse me, I think you're cute and was wondering if I could give you my number" I wouldn't think that was objectifying. In this situation the girl is respecting my personal space, she's not aggressively asserting her demands on me, she showing her interest in order to determine how I feel about it.

Some radical feminists might think that being approached in public is objectifying but I don't agree with them. I think they are overreacting to what their feminist beliefs have taught them, namely "all men are sexual predators. sexual advances are aggressive and predatory in nature."

[–]rztzz 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think just both of your examples aren't really the context of "objectification" that typhonblue is referring to. Objectification would be if a girl posts a photo that happens to have herself in it on reddit, and people express their sexual interest in her in the comments, disregarding the actual topic of the post.

And in that context, I think they were saying that a man expressing his sexual interest is seen as 'creepier' than a girl doing the same.

[–]tigalicious 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

'Objectification' is an idea, a word created to define a way of thinking. Harassment and sexual assault are physical actions. Defining the examples doesn't mean that there is no valid underlying concept.

[–]typhonblue 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

no valid underlying concept.

There is no 'valid underlying concept' because 'objectification' is a thought crime.

It would be like corporations defining some new thing like, oh, I dunno, embezzlation--the act of viewing corporations as sources of income and not entities with rights--and started stigmatizing employees suspected of embezzlation. They haven't done anything, but, you know, their thoughts still need to be policed.

[–]tigalicious -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You don't have to be so dramatic, objectifying somebody isn't illegal. It's just a mental attitude that many people find to be negative. You don't think anybody ever gets a bad reputation at work because they don't come across as a team player? Just because there's no word for that specific attitude doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. These things aren't new, and they aren't as extreme as you're painting them. It's just how people relate. Men and women usually want a partner who is attracted to them and who also respects them, just like a company wants to employ people who are willing to put the company's interests first. That's not always what happens, of course, but from their respective perspectives, it would be nice.

Unless you deny that negative attitudes exist, or believe that we should ignore them and allow them freely into our lives, then we don't actually disagree on much. You don't have to have sexual objectification on your own list of negative attitudes, of course. But you could also lighten up a bit about how other people define their preferences in life.

[–]typhonblue 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't like it for several reasons. My first reason is that it's a thought crime.

My second reason is that emotionally healthy people do not objectify others sexually. For the vast majority of people the allure of sex is feeling desirable not having a lifeless object to masturbate with. That's because us humans are the most sympathetic and social species on the planet.

So if there are people who 'objectify' them 'objectifying others' is better termed a symptom of mental illness.

[–]OuiCrudites 24 points25 points26 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Duh, men aren"t human.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What about when a guy says a guy is attractive? I'm not completely sure what to think.

I think it might be the level of objectivity in the comment. Things like "I'd hit it" "10/10 would fuck" "I'd like to butter her/his muffin" etc. are straightfowardly sexual in nature. Saying someone looks attractive or like a (non-pornographic) celebrity is less explicit flattery that could possibly pass as nothing more than a compliment.

Without a doubt I will say there is a twisted disparity in the things we are allowed to say about the opposite gender. There are a lot of things men aren't allowed to say that women are. I think more examples of this could be helpful as well as some actual examples of the second instance when 'a guy even says a girl is attractive on reddit, he's a creeper/whiteknight/'neckbeard virgin.' I'm familiar with the 'creeper' stereotype and label as well the the others, but I don't think I've witnessed the whiteknight/neckbeard virgin labels applied in that situation.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Funny you bring that up. A few nights ago I was at a party. I'm completely straight, but there was a guy there that was obviously quite handsome, and a drunk girl jumped on him and wrapped her legs around him. Later on, speaking to him in a group, I said "you must get that a lot, you're a handsome guy". A girl in the group very seriously asked "are you gay?". I said I wasn't and they weren't quite sure why I would call him handsome.

On the flipside, girls compliment each other on their appearance all the time, saying that they look pretty or beautiful etc. heck, my ex girlfriend had a FHM style poster of a naked woman on her wall, just because she said "she wanted to have her body". Think if I had some naked buff dude on my wall, more than a few eyebrows would be raised.

What's worse is if you read their FAQ, they fry to limit the "average joe"posts, insisting on only "celebrity" pics; on the assumption that the celebs already assume their pics are on the internet... guys can't fucking win, you gotta be famous before any woman will look more than once.

3) Non-celebrity redditors who take self-portraits posted outside of [2] /r/Ladyboners must be contacted directly (whether in comments to their original post or in a PM) by whoever chooses to post them here on [3] /r/Ladyboners.

Dude, there's even a fucking bot that sees if women who make popular posts on Reddit have posted to /r/gonewild. If you guys even fucking dare try making this out to be a serious issue for men then you have truly become the most silly movement ever, if you weren't already.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I doubt anyone here would claim that this is a serious issue for men. This is just a casual discussion.

[–]LittleRedHeadedLady -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Girls can do it now because there isn't a history of women harassing men. However, I don't really agree with that premise because people shouldn't be sexually harassing people like that... at some point it all will need to stop. Women are feeling liberated in saying what they've thought for years, but could never say. Yet, the real point is... maybe nobody should be objectifying anyone. Although, anyone who posts their naked photos on reddit is probably looking for those kind of responses, so probably for them, no harm done. On non-GW stuff, I think it is best to keep it cleaner. Though a nice compliment should always be welcomed. Ya know, like "you're cute". And that's different than "You're cute, I want to screw you."

[–]rztzz 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think you're forcing your personal preferences onto the actions of others. I think most guys would prefer the latter, as we rarely receive any compliments like that. I'm not saying anything is right or should be done

[–]LittleRedHeadedLady -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Aww, well a lot of guys would not appreciate being told that. I concede that even some women would be okay with that. Either way, a man or a woman saying it to a stranger is risking being labeled as a creep.

[–]fondueguy 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Girls can do it now because there isn't a history of women harassing men.

Dead wrong, we just don't hear about this because our dialogue never includes calling men victims.

Wives would legally lot to leave their husbands based on his sexual performance. A group of women would then judge the man's performance live, humiliating him, and finally the decision is made public so he can be mocked by the show village.

I don't have time to make all the links...

As a sign of cowardice, women would give young men white feathers as a way of shaming men who did not go to war. In other words men were harassed for not killing other men and/or dying in battle. Men's lives where being objectified as pawns in a war. Imagine if men dis that to women.

Boys get their penises cut because of a western tradition (separate from Jews and early Christians) that tries to control boys sexual behavior. Does cutting a persons genitals to control them sexualy match up with giving someone a cat call to control them sexually?

Men have routinely been called pigs, dogs, and persons with one thing on their mind, by women. The insult is about reducing men's of sexuality, ideals, and feelings (the vastness of men's romanticism) and portraying them as mindless animals who only think about fucking. It's like calling a woman a shallow, non commiting whore, except that you could only make fun of men's sexuality on tv.

Trust me, the harassment has gone both ways. It's just that the crap that happens to men is never seen as harassment.

[–]LittleRedHeadedLady 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Men have always used other men as pawns in war, I'm not sure that is a gender issue but rather more of a social class issue. Rich men didn't pressure other rich men into war, they pressured poor men into it. In fact during the Civil War, if you had the money you could buy your way out of the military or pay someone to be your replacement. I don't know what the white feather thing is. But I doubt women, on their very own, wanted their fathers, husbands, sons or brothers to go off to war and possibly die. In fact, having served in the Navy I can tell you that is a great fear of the men's wives.

I'm with you on circumcision. It's the legal right I think men need to fight for, bodily integrity for all. I have two boys and they are intact because I do believe each person has a right to their own body and no parent (Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise) has a right to alter their child's body like that. However, people who do circumcise do not do so to control their child's body or sexual future, they do it for silly reasons and the incorrect assumption of cleanliness. Although, it did become popular at first to control sexual desire, nobody circumcises their infant child for that reason today. Nobody should have their sex organs cut at birth and nobody should be catcalled. They aren't even related.

Well, some men are pigs who do only think of sex and treat women as sex objects. I know a few don't and there are women who don't believe that but I know a lot of guys who aren't actually jerks. The idea isn't to say that men's sexuality is wrong, it is to say that women aren't here only to fulfill men's sexual desires, women are people. We get to decide what we do with our bodies, not men. And some men still believe women are just sex objects. I'm sure some women are shallow, non committing loose women.

It is basically expected to treat women as sex objects in today's society. If you treat them like you treat men you will not get along with them. Personally I naturally think of sex all the time, and can do nothing about it. I don't think you have a right to call me a jerk for my natural inclination. What you are doing is exactly the same as a guy calling women who won't sleep with him jerks. People not wanting what you want in a relationship is not morally wrong.

It is not expected to treat women as sex objects in today's societies. That's absurd. You can treat a woman as a person, and you'll get along with them just fine. Lots of people think about sex all the time, even women... GASP! We all have a natural inclination to think about sex a lot, only some people don't treat members of the opposite sex as only good for sex. Some of those people are actually men. Any person who calls another person a jerk for not sleeping with them is an idiot. No woman has to sleep with any man just because he wants to sleep with her. That's absurd. Yes, men thinking they have a right to sleep with any woman they see as hot out on the street is morally wrong and stupid. Same goes for any woman who thinks that she has a right to sleep with any man she wants in the misguided belief that all men want to sleep with any woman who will have them.

I guess being given special treatment because of your sex is different than being a sex object. My bad I guess.

I think you need to clarify what exactly people should be doing in order to not treat women as sex objects. Often people complain about that but I can never make sense of what they mean. What I think they usually mean is that guys must want to marry them or think that they are amazing for things other than their looks. Which is why I brought up the case of people calling women jerks for not sleeping with them. Calling guys jerks for not liking your personality, or for not wanting to commit to you is just as bad. It is just entitlement, saying members of the opposite sex are pigs if they don't do what you want.

Treating someone as only body parts and not a person would be an example of treating someone like a sex objects. Trying to be "friends" with a girl and being super "nice" to her and then crying about the "friendzone" when she rejects you and your sexual advances would an example of treating women as sex objects.

Women aren't here on earth to sleep with men who want to sleep with them. That's a male entitlement. As far as I'm aware, dating should involve liking someone's personality so I don't know any women calling men jerks for not liking their personality, though I'm sure it happens. I agree it is entitlement when a man gets upset because a woman doesn't do what he wants by sleeping with him.
