A Question About Paternal Surrender

Granted this is just me, and I have no idea how many other people are out there who agree with me, but I fit your description.

Abortion is the ending of a life, and I don't see the difference between killing a 6 month old fetus and a newborn.

Paternal surrender however in my mind resembles putting a child up for adoption. A father recognizes that they are incapable of caring for their child, so he revokes his rights and responsibilities. I don't see the difference between that and a mother leaving her child at a safe haven site.

I support abortion even though I believe it's immoral, if that makes sense. Kind of a least worst option, kind of thing.

I totally support LPS. I would support it even if abortion were illegal, as long as maternal abandonment (safe haven) and unilateral adoption are legal options for women after they give birth.

As long as one party has a way to avoid unwanted parenthood, the other party should as well.

There's no consensus on the morality of abortions, but they're legal regardless.

Here's how it works.

Should women have the right to get abortions? Well they're going to have them anyway. We ought to make sure they're provided safe abortions.

Should men have the right to financial abortions? Well they're... Just lazy. Ball and chain on their ankles.

Why is it only when men are concerned that it becomes an issue of morality? Only men are held to moral standards. When you realize that you'll become enraged with an anger that would surely last a thousand years if you lived that long. It's best to just not think about these things.

My personal opinions on abortion are essentially irrelevant as I have no legal say in the decision whatsoever. Legally speaking, a fetus is not considered a person. the choice for an abortion will never be mine. The concept of LPS does nothing to alter the right of choice that is already granted to women. All it does is that it would allow a man to withdraw any and all legal rights and responsibilites for himself should the mother CHOOSE to carry the pregnancy to term prior to her doing so. Her right to choose is not infringed. In fact her rights are further protected in that she now has a clear understanding that his excercise of LPS means that she will be doing it all by herself should she choose to do so.

I don't fall into the category you mentioned, I'm fine with abortion and legal paternal surrender (LPS). To me the two aren't really that related and I'd rather refer to 'legal paternal surrender' as 'legal parental surrender' for gender ambiguity.

Anywho, in my mind LPS is more closely related to adoption. In the case of adoption both parents (ideally) have made it clear they can't raise the child so they hand it over to the State and their parental rights and responsibilities are transferred to the State and later to the adoptive family.

Parents who put their children up for adoption have no obligations towards their children or their children's adoptive parents.

However, when one parent decides to raise the child the unwilling parent is forced to financially assist with the child's care. This is validated by the claim that the financial aide is for the child's benefit. No such claim is made for adopted children because it is assumed the adoptive parents are in a position to raise a child comfortably. I would posit that the same assumption be made for biological parents who decide to raise a child on their own. Under that assumption there would be no grounds to request, let alone force, any form of assistance from the unwilling parent.

That's my 2 cents on LPS.

Yes. I support paternal surrender because abortion is legal and I do not believe that is ever going to change... but I do not consider having an elective abortion to be a moral choice.

Regardless of the morality of elective abortion, the fact of its existence makes childbirth optional, not something that a woman can ever honestly and truly hold anyone but her self responsible for. As such, she should not have the right to use it to extract money from the father.

Paternal surrender needs to be view in the context of the rights and future of the child that will have no part in either decision. When you look at it from that point of view, paternal surrender sounds a lot like trying to go back in time to put a condom on.

I think abortion can be the most moral decision in a situation. I do not support the idea of financial abortion, however.
