I don't see a problem with this. It's a red herring, but even if it weren't, I believe the reasons for womens' abortions are of no consequence to the federal government.

You know, I want to be as outraged as anyone else over sex-selection abortion, regardless of which sex it involves (and up to this point, I was under the impression it was girls who were eliminated, but learning differently doesn't change my mind.) My knee-jerk response is to think that I should be more outraged over that than over other reasons given for aborting... but honestly I can't bring myself to feel that way - at least not more outraged than I am over any elective abortion (that is, abortion done for any reason other than to prevent pregnancy-caused death) in the first place.

Whether you're talking about boys or girls, aborting based on the sex of the baby is only wrong if you think of abortion as the termination of a living human organism.

If the unborn baby is "just tissue," a "non-person," or a "potential life," then sex-selection abortion is no more offensive than abortion for any other reason. You can't be justified in crying discrimination if the act is committed against an intangible concept rather than an existing individual.

On the other hand, if you consider the unborn baby to be human enough and alive enough to warrant outrage over the use of abortion to eliminate babies unwanted because of their sex, then I say they are alive and human enough to warrant equal outrage over the use of abortion to keep the parents from having to make other, harder choices, deal with difficult circumstances, or accept the emotional fallout that goes along with giving a child up for adoption.

This is not because the reasons for the choice to abort are somehow equal - sex selection is the epitome of shallowness, while other reasons for aborting involve genuine fears and aversions. This is because, regardless of reasons or excuses for the desire to have that choice, discussion on the morality of abortion boils down to whether we're talking about the destruction of a living human organism, or whether we're not.

If we're not, and abortion is okay, then there is no call to criticize people's reasons for making that choice.

Only if we acknowledge that the procedure ends the progress and development of a living human organism do we have any grounds for criticizing any reason given for having an abortion.

So? I see nothing wrong with that being legal. Is it ethically wrong? Perhaps. But that doesn't mean it should be illegal. If abortion is legal, the causes shouldn't matter.

It is borderline if this is a Mens Rights issues, however this illustrates contradictions in fundamental Feminist thinking that profoundly affects men. It also illustrates the media suppression of these contradictions.

(1) The principle

"It's a woman body, she can do what she wants with it"

is at the base of our reproductive laws and the fact that Men have essentially no reproductive rights. To pass this law would be in contradiction of that principle.

YET our Feminist sister's wail lamentably about the fact that in India & China etc females are being aborted, as if it is yet another example of Global disregard and discrimination of women. They then self righteously bathe in the tale of woe and 'discrimination'.

(2) This issue and its inherent contradiction is an embarrassment to the Feminists movement, yet it received little mainstream media coverage. It received little public debate, it was suppressed.

Why should the reason for an abortion make the act of abortion illegal?!

Either abortion is legal, whatever the reason, or it is not. But we must remember the old feminist trick to rename actions depending on whether they like them or not:

Terminate a foetus for reasons other than sex selection - abortion (good).
Terminate a female foetus because it's female - female foeticide; gendercide; clear proof of institutional misogyny (bad).
Terminate a male foetus because it's male - abortion; grrl power (good).

I noticed the article only focused on the gender-selective abortion of little girls and it got me curious. I doubt but, is there any kind of data on which is more common in the U.S.?

Adoption statistics and sex selective statistics would seem to suggest there would be more aborting of baby boys.

The funny part is that a lot of abortions come from the black community and the founder of planned parenthood was a known racist....

‘Sec. 250. Discrimination against the unborn on the basis of race or sex ‘(a) In General- Whoever knowingly-- ‘(1) performs an abortion knowing that such abortion is sought based on the sex, gender, color or race of the child, or the race of a parent of that child; ‘(2) uses force or the threat of force to intentionally injure or intimidate any person for the purpose of coercing a sex-selection >or race-selection abortion; (3) solicits or accepts funds for the performance of a sex-selection abortion or a race-selection abortion; or ‘(4) transports a woman into the United States or across a State line for the purpose of obtaining a sex-selection abortion or >race-selection abortion; or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.

So basically, this was a law that protected the innocent child from being the victim of race/sex based violence.

(2) CIVIL ACTION BY RELATIVES- he father of an unborn child who is the subject of an abortion performed or attempted in >violation of subsection (a), or a maternal grandparent of the unborn child if the pregnant woman is an unemancipated >minor, may in a civil action against any person who engaged in the violation, obtain appropriate relief, unless the >pregnancy resulted from the plaintiff’s criminal conduct or the plaintiff consented to the abortion.

So, if some father wanted to keep the child and the mother had the baby aborted could sue any person who engaged in the abortion as long as he didn't consent...

That sounds like a pretty big step up for father's that had their unborn child taken from them and destroyed because it wasn't the right sex or race
