At first I wasn't bothered by this at all. Then I realised someone thought selling that card was a good idea, and other people apparently agreed. And people probably bought them. So I feel a little weird now.

I don't think the problem is with people selling these cards, but the fact that they would be outraged if we reversed the genders. I'm not going to cry about sexist jokes, but I damn well better be allowed to make my own.
[–]Amunium 17 points18 points19 points 14 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. Very often when I see a post in r/mr about some joke about men, my immediate reaction is "Oh, come on, it's not a very good joke, but it's just a fucking joke - we shouldn't be offended by something that petty". And then I realise the problem isn't the joke - I think very few of us are seriously offended by them. The problem is that a version with the genders reversed would be completely unacceptable and cause an uproar.
Light-hearted, innocent sexism should either be allowed or not. You only get to pick one.

Trivialise? If it wasn't so clear you were simply looking to be butthurt, I would ask you were you got that from my post.
No, it's about equality. I want women to be equal to men, but that means getting the bad with the good, and it means not getting to complain about jokes targeted at you while making the exact same jokes about others.
It's true that I, at apparently at least 15 others, don't really care about these jokes one way or the other, but right now we are in a fight to enlighten society to the fact that men experience sexism as well, and this is a matter of principle. It's about making people who don't think about this stuff realise the rampant hypocrisy in society; that many of the things that are sexist if targeted at women are glossed over when targeted at men.
Dismissing this as a valid complaint, even though I don't personally care, is like saying Rosa Parks shouldn't have complained about having to relinquish her seat for a while passenger, just because she normally wouldn't be bothered by having to stand. It's not the act itself, it's the principle. (And no, I'm not comparing men's rights to blacks' rights - just the argument here.)

[–]Amunium 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's not the exact same joke though.
That makes no sense if you've read what you're responding to. We are talking about the hypothetical case of the same joke with the genders reversed. That is, by definition, the same joke - only with the genders reversed.
If you don't have a complaint to make then don't complain
We have a complaint to make. The complaint is unequal treatment. Again, to compare to Rosa Parks, she wasn't actually complaining about having to stand, but about the unequal treatment of blacks to whites. Same deal here.
Are you understanding the difference?
Not really, no. The difference you are highlighting here is sort of like saying that if a man told a joke about a woman's vagina, the corresponding joke from a woman about a man would be about the penis instead, and penises aren't the same as vaginas. True, being a sex toy and being replaceable by a sex toy aren't exactly the same thing, but the are equivalent. Also, this isn't even what we were talking about. It's still the hypothetical case of the same joke with reversed genders.
This is a similar situation to when Obama was portrayed as a monkey...
No, it's not. Bush was compared to a monkey because, frankly, he looked like one. It has nothing to do with race. In your example of a man's replaceability by a sex toy, that's not only directed at one man, but the gender.

This was my analogy
I know. But it boomeranged back in your face, as my point is exactly that if women talk about men as a gender, it is about gender, not about the individual.
Most men would consider being called a "sex toy" a compliment.
I seriously doubt that. Sure, many if not most men are more open to sex-only relationships, and being a sex toy there isn't a bad thing - and neither would it be for women. But if all a man is to women is a sex toy, and no one sees him for anything but his penis, I think that's exactly as hurtful to a man as to a woman.

Come on guys, this is a legitimate discussion, stop downvoting because you disagree, this person brings up a valid point that should be debated so why are you downvoting them? That button is for comments that may as well not be there and if you guys aren't going to even make room for alternative opinions then you may as well just take the next step and call it for what it is, a circle jerk.

I had the same thought process, and the only reason I saw it was because I saw some woman reading it and laughing, so I picked one up out of curiosity.

Hallmark is overpriced cardboard.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I looked at some Hallmark cards for Mother's Day. They were all $4-5.
Instead I used creatacard software to make my own card which I was able to customize. Probably cost me $0.05 and 20 minutes of my time.
[–]Dranosh 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
or you can get a piece of construction paper and a few markers ....
[–]TomBayes 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Those aren't materials everyone has readily available, believe it or not.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I always draw some pictures on my creatacards. I'm a terrible artist so they usually consist of very poorly drawn things.
This Mother's Day I chose a card with lots of flowers on it. So I drew some very basic tanks, an airplane, and some paratroops and wrote a caption that said, "So that card is more manly". I also always write several sentences of my own words in addition to the "printed" message.
As long as it's clear you put time and effort into a card it doesn't matter one bit if it was printed or entirely self constructed.

"I thought I would get you one of those vibrating masturbator sleeves, but you already have a girlfriend with parkinson's."

It's funny. It's a funny card. For a subreddit that complains about people not being able to take a joke, you guys really can't take a joke.
[–]grumpyoldgit 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is fair, what there needs to be is balance for all, harmless fun can still be harmless fun.
[–]down_vote_that 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't see the problem here...
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Are you serious? It's a fucking joke, it's tasteless and unfunny but, believe it or not, men also sometimes make tasteless and unfunny jokes about women. With the possible exceptions of /r/foreveralone and /r/depression, I'm pretty sure this is the whiniest subreddit.
[–]kratistos 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's funny how the post right below this one is complaining about how people bitch about sexist jokes.
[–]bantam83 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I didn't see the problem with it until I realized that it would be obscene if the card instead said: "I wanted to get you a stupid fuck-hole...". If someone called someone I loved stupid or a fuck-hole, I'd be pissed. But I'm sure that some people that got this card must have liked this sentiment.
[–]Nebu 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The reverse gendered joke would be more like "I wanted to get you a dishwasher..."
[–]bantam83 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was just doing a literal translation of "silly" and "sex toy". I guess maybe yours would be a more likely thing to see;
I advocate minor acts of vandalism for cases like this. Surreptitiously bend over the corner of the card while you read it. That way no-one will buy it, and both Hallmark and the store will have a small financial loss as a punishment for their misandry.
[–]Demonicpoodle 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeahhhh. I just discovered this sub-reddit but it's been really...motivating me.
I'm doing this at least once, and may continue to do it in the future. If I see that blasted card, I am going to buy it, take it home, and draw a man saying the exact same speech bubble on the right side of the card (and I'll put the text that's on the right side of the original in both speech bubbles). I will then go put it back in the front of the cards I bought it from.
Nothing violent, nothing even insulting, just literally a man next to the woman repeating exactly what she is saying. The reaction(s) will be very interesting.
[–]NancyGrace 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
wow you're so edgy and creative
I saw a marriage congratulations card once that had a woman standing with a man on a leash, on his hands and knees. The inside said "the key to a successful marriage is to know your place."
[–]wickedspork -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Why does this subreddit always bitch about stupid stuff. Get your priorities straight. This is NOT offensive and anyone who finds it so is a moron. It's just a joke. Get over yourself. You sound just as annoying as extreme feminists, another group of people who love to get pissed off at stupid shit.
[–]NancyGrace 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
you obviously don't get it then. go back to r/femmit
[–]wickedspork -5 points-4 points-3 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
No I get it, I just don't get butt hurt over harmless shit like the majority of men here. Get your panties out of your asshole and stop being a little bitch.
[–]NancyGrace 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Nope you go back. We don't want your kind here

There has never been a card made to objectify women, it's so unfair!!!!!!
Seriously though you're right this is fucking stupid.
[–]wickedspork -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thank you! I realize im in the wrong place to be making opposing statements, but I subscribed to this subreddit hoping for some interesting topics and commentary and whatnot, but so far it's just been "men" getting way too butt hurt every time the word "female" is dropped. It's just makes this subreddit look like a complete joke and I can't take it seriously at all most the time.
[–]SlimThugga -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's pretty misandri-wait a minute, why would a dishwasher talk and say something like that?
[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 14 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
It's all in good humor -- imo.
But good luck getting anyone to type "misandry" and having it the top comment if this hits peoples front page.
Where are you SRS? LOL
[–]UnoriginalMike 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Methinks if gender rolls were reversed and some dude was saying "for your birthday I was going to buy you a whore, but you already have a wife" things would be different.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's not the same. If it would say "I was going to buy you a sex toy but you already have a girlfriend" then it would be the same.
If the gender roles would be reversed, there would be as many butthurt women as there are now men.
[–]Collective82 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Whore and dildo are HUGELY different.
[–]throwaway6432 -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This card plays into the "Guys are always ready for sex" stereotype that gender reversing would not preserve. Hence gender reversing it is pointless.
I have seen plenty of terrible cards including "Open this card if you want to be my Valentine / Now close this card if you want to be my sex slave"
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That was my point, not sure if you are agreeing or???
But I got downvoted so WTG /mensrights
