One angle to take here might be to point out that you'd rather favor policies that help minorities and disadvantaged groups by targeting those areas they are disadvantaged in, rather than targeting the race or gender itself. In this way, those policies would disproportionally help those disadvantaged minority groups, while also not favoring any group over another unfairly.

For example, a program that seeks to provide extra assistance to historically redlined communities would greatly benefit the black and other minority groups that disproportionately live in those communities. Such a policy need not target individuals, businesses, or families who are of a particular racial or gender class. A white person living in the disadvantaged community would benefit just as much from a policy that also seeks to redress the lingering impact of racist policies of the past.

For another example, prison and criminal justice reform would disproportionately affect men in a positive way. But, such reforms would also disproportionally affect black and other minority groups that have historically gotten a raw deal from our criminal justice system. Ending the drug war and shifting drug policy away from criminal incarceration and toward rehabilitation and social services would prevent a huge number of disadvantaged minority men from becoming felons, disenfranchised and thrown into the cyclic criminal justice system, which is also one source of fractured families in those communities. And the point would not be to look at black men and say, "You're a disadvantaged minority, and so we'll treat you differently now." (This isn't to say that there is not also room to shift law enforcement attitudes specifically toward minorities, but that's outside the example I'm using here.)

When it comes to this restaurant issue, there should be no reason to favor any business owner on the basis of sex or gender. If a woman or a person in a relevant minority group qualifies for assistance, then they should get it without any need for favoritism if the policy is well written. Likewise for a white owned business. If this can't happen without explicitly favoring one group over another, then I would argue that the program is poorly implemented and has structural flaws on a deeper level.

I'm all for affirmation action when it targets proven at need individuals regardless of identity.

This was about small business owners. If you're a small business owner and your business suffered because of covid-19, you should get aid.

It is likely that minority businesses did suffer more than white businesses. Part of that is racism, and part of that is the history and legacy of racism. For example the communities that they do business in, historical access to financing and equity (meaning "ownership" like owning your own land), and things like that.

But instead of saying "you're black here's free money" it would be much better to say "you need help here's free money".

The practical effect of that kind of policy is that minority businesses would be helped more than white businesses. You don't have to bring identity into it to make that happen if black businesses legitimately need more help.

So throw identity out completely and do it based on need, and possibly based on geographic location and other supplemental things like that (based on old maps banks used to use to legally discriminate against black neighborhoods well into the 1990s).

You can still address racism and fix things like this in a manner similar to affirmative action that is both fair and constitutional. So why not do it that way? The left even had this idea back in maybe 2016. I forget who but one of the women running for president (not Hilary) was popular for having ideas like this. But suddenly that kind of out of the box thinking has disappeared in place of entrenched identity politics that really isn't helping anyone. Like it's not even helping minorities now since it's unconstitutional and won't go into effect.

As for gender I think you'd find that if you threw out identity, there'd be no difference in actual rates of need, since there isn't a history of sexism in the way here like you see for race. But that's beside the point, and also kind of why this is a good idea.

I'll eat the downvotes: white men are being treated by their community the way black men have been treated by their community for decades, except they are mad as hell about it.

When I speak to the youths I mentor, it is amazing how similar my experiences 20 years ago are mirroring the young white males experience now. Myself and my peers were told to shut up, fall in line, support our 'queens'. They have no desire to do that.

The homophobe thinks they're in the right demeaning the homosexual. The neo-nazi thinks they're in the right dehumanizing the black person; the Hotep, the white person. The high-caste Indian nationalist thinks they're in the right looking down on the Pakistani. The Han nationalist thinks they're in the right mistreating the Muslim. The mysogionist/misandrist believe the other gender is less than.

All bigots think they're targeting the "right group". This is no different.

Feminism is a right wing cancer that is paid to infest the Left. Progressives have become corrupted by the FBI/CIA at this point (in the USA). Liberals were always right wingers.

Racism, sexism, discrimination and oppression are natural on the right side of politics. There's nothing new about any of this. Biden still brags about pushing for the VAWA.
