It's not so much that there is a double standard as the fact that women face no consequences for their own decisions in the modern world.

Straight men typically like boobs of certain size and shape, body of certain shape, long legs, nice hair and skin, feminine personality, etc.

This is all shunned to a degree by society, ranging from the male gaze to straight up oppression.

Now look at women wanting big dicks, tall men, walking atm's, strong arms, etc. All this is mostly seen as women taking their sexual lives in their own hands.

The hypocrisy is real

Next up in the research, which is the more insecure gender? The height thing is heavily influenced by insecurity. I also damn well know that's more than 55%. The short vs tall difference is more than just having half the dating pool. It's way more extreme than that.

Height obsession seems to be an american thing and that's something which always puzzled me as an italian.

Italy and I would say Europe don't seem focused as much about height. Sure, when women mention attractive physical traits in men height comes up very often and they prefer their man to be taller ( which is basically what this study says), but there isn't an height cut-off ( the infamous "if you are less than 6ft swipe left" tinder bios are almost unseen here) like you see in america.

Usually tall women pair with tall men and tall men pair with short, average and tall women, but we don't see 5ft1inch women requesting their men to be atleast 6ft or taller. I would say in 95% of couples the man is taller than the woman, but as long you're 5ft7 inches you are fine here in Italy and your height shouldn't pose much of a problem, even if you're considered short ( average height here is 5ft9/10 inches so similar to american averages).

TBH I’m surprised it was only around 50% of women that wanted a taller man.

And I have no issues with that - people are attracted to who they’re attracted to, can’t change it.

Just don’t label men as sexist simply because they’re attracted to someone slim and you’re a fat porker who can’t moderate your diet or get off your couch to exercise.

I'd say this is inaccurate. Only 55% of women self-reported as wanting taller men, but they all prefer such. And yes, a very large part of it relates to how other women view her man. You see, the physical and financial status of a man is seen as a signifier of her ability to attract a worthy mate. A non top-tier man means that she is a non-attractive woman, in the minds of the overall feminine hierarchy. So her personal "feminine fragility" is very much on display when she demands a tall, well-earning man.

I've dated girls who were taller than me, but generally it was they who had issues with me being shorter. Which is odd, considering that I lift heavy and play rugby. I mean, if the argument is "protection" there aren't too many people who are going to start with someone like me (I am not trying to do an "I am very badass" kind of thing here, lol). The idea that this gets waved away instead of being an "investigation into women's views of patriarchal norms" which I know they generally love to do, amazes me, at times. It's like they pick and choose parts of "patriarchical theory" they like and dislike.

Height is a 'fun' one. I have seen reports of a height wage gap as large as 7%, which is more than the gender wagegap if one corrects for things such as working hours, work experience and education. Haven't heard a single feminist talk about it any day. Talking about people who are fat and can essentially just eat less? There are hordes of anti-fatshamers. Well, apparently it's the same for short people because they can just break their legs and stretch them.

Typical answer to people who complain about height discrimination? "Develop a better personality", "Be funnier", "Work harder".

I once debated with someone about women’s preferences in dating. They were defending this double standard you’re pointing out. So I reversed it on them and said “well then by that logic it’s ok for men to demand that women be unrealistically hot lingerie models”. They had to defend that too.

Try it sometime, you can walk people like that into a corner where their only options are: defend misogynistic ideals or admit hypocrisy. It won’t convince anyone but it sure does take the edge off a bit.
