You're not going insane.

In the 50's MacCarthyism executed a purge of Marxist intellectuals in the US. This created a void among left-wing sociologists that had to be filled. It soon was by a new set of theories, chief of which gender theory, a.k.a. "The Patriarchy".

These theories are usually identified as neo-marxists, but I say they would more aptly be named post-marxist, because they take the stance Marx explicitly rejected: that the superstructure (cultural constructs) is where the tension in power happens rather than the infrastructure (ownership of the means of production). In other words, according to post-marxists, groups that are culturally dominant are the oppressors, not groups that are economically dominant.

Of course this is bullshit. Power comes from money, and that money can then be used to modify the culture to cement power, not the other way around.

Those "grievance studies" theories however bullshitty they are, are very useful for capitalism, as they can easily be integrated in the capitalistic machine without any significant change in the spread of money. The mostly hereditary capitalist class is already 50% women because that's how biology works. Even better, by presenting work equality as a good thing (Marx would spin in his grave at the idea that more people working for bosses would be empowering) the capitalists made a new reservoir of labour available. They could present this great "progress" as a victory for "the left" while making a lot of money out of it.

Obviously working rights for women are not in any way the result of a "fight", they were the result of contraception and home appliances. The fight was essentially controlled opposition for would be activists.

The illusion is made complete through the creation of a pseudoscience, the modern superstructure tool since religion has come out of style. Gender Theory works outside the realm of regular academia, but has all the trappings of it, and is quickly infecting it. It tells us a revisionist history of men acting as a unified group to oppress women, through all times and places (because worldwide cultural phenomenon were never a thing before the 20th, except in this case based on no evidence whatsoever).

And there you have it, a very efficient tool (among others) to keep us fighting among ourselves. Just as Marx described it. Superstructure supporting infrastructure ownership.

I basically agree. I believe powers that be keep everyone down, fighting against each other. The gender divide between male and female is part of that, and keeping men down in the name of Feminism is part of that.

I would use less gendered language, but I'll frame it this way.

Much of american history has been about keeping groups fighting against each other in tribalistic ways to stop us from coming together and doing something to improve our material conditions.

It isnt just a men vs women thing although that's part of it It's also black vs white. Straight vs LGBTQ+, etc.

The fact is, the powers that be love to use these issues to keep the working class fighting amongst themselves.

In 2016, we almost broke out of it. These tensions were relatively relaxed among the obama administration, and I feel like we were starting to win on social issues on the left to a large extent. The old battles were being won. Gay marriage was being legalized, abortion was safe, the right was starting to look baffoonishly stupid, and the left was looking quite sane. The right had a clear demographic problem going forward. Social conservatives were by and far a dying breed, as most younger people flocked HEAVILY toward the left, with the right being mostly older while males (like boomers and gen X). It was game over for the right.

And what was the big glowing issue of 2016? The economy. The economy never really recovered from 2008. We had slow job growth, most jobs paid poorly. Millennials were generation screwed. Stuck in grueling low wage jobs, student debt, medical bills, can't afford housing, etc.

But what ended up happening?

You had candidates like Hillary and Trump end up be the nominees. It didnt have to be this way, but the powers that be in the media and the political parties themselves kind of curated it this way. Clinton was pushed as inevitable, and while i dont think the GOP establishment like trump, the media hyped him up and the democrats were happy to egg that on as it made hillary more "electable" by comparison.

And what were the issues of the day? Identity politics. Hillary CLinton was a fairly economically moderate feminist, who downplayed economic issues, was an explicit lesser evil candidate, and basically smeared her primary challengers as sexists. Bernie's base were "bernie bros" to them. Males who were sexist against hillary and had the gall to put economic issues that actually would improve their lives ahead of social issues. So, Hillary shoehorned the debate to be about social issues, while demonizing those of us who wanted economics. And if we happened to be white, and male, and straight, all the better because then they could constantly rub our "privilege" in our faces.

Meanwhile, what did Trump do? The opposite basically. He appealed to the independent blocs of people who were dissatisfied with the democratic party. He focused heavily on social issues, riling up his right wing base, while also bringing in independents who were alienated by the rhetoric coming out of the democratic party that I spoke of. And he combined it with economic populism under his "make america great again" banner. It was a conservative approach to economics for sure, but if the democrats are offering you literally nothing and shoving identity politics down your throat, some people voted for trump simply out of spite.

And thus, the weird border skirmishes like gamergate and atheism+ that were once abstract things under the obama adfministration and mostly fuelled by the alt right and the social justice movement became issue #1. And the people followed. So, during the trump administration, everything became social issues. The centrist democrats ignored their loss from 2016 and the lessons to be learned and blamed russia, and maintained their focus on economic centrism and identity politics, while trump went far to the right on both. And notice what isn't being represented here. Working and middle class issues. neither party gives a crap. Both are too distracted and exhausted fighting and refighting social battles that had largely already been won just a few years ago, as the democrats "blundered" (might have been intentional) their advantage away. They moved so far left on social issues in such an insufferable way they alienated much of the center. While the right basically was able to pull itself out of its tailspin.

In essence, the democrats took what could have been the past half century of progress and threw it in the garbage causing us to continue to bicker over these issues, instead of offering to actually improve the material lives of its citizens. It makes me sick, and this is what im to the point that i divest myself from both the republican and democratic parties at this point.

Essentially, Im considered one of those "class reductionist" lefties who ignores social issues because id rather fight for UBI and medicare for all than deal with whatever garbage issues of the day these two parties are fighting about.

I'm a far right winger, for perspective. I used to post on the IMDb politics board, before Amazon shut it down. It was a middle of the road board with lots of people from all across the spectrum, a good healthy mix.

There was a left wing guy there who used to always talk about class. Anytime another left winger would start talking about racism/sexism/homophobia or what have you, he would try to bring it back around to class. He would cheer for all the same social justice programs, but caution that we could be more effective if we addressed things from the point of view of income instead of race. So for example, make Affirmative Action poverty based instead of race and sex based. He would also discourage fellow left wingers from championing celebrities, because it's not appropriate to have a poor people's movement represented by rich people.

The other left wingers hated him. None of them got along, and they always accused him of secretly being right wing. It's not surprising. Right wingers like me used to post basically the same arguments but with more force and less nuance. I reject social justice and political correctness wholesale on ideological grounds. But being a right winger, I could tell he was not. He really was a left winger. He was just a true believer in spaceship earth and all that, whereas pretty much every other left winger I've ever encountered has just been a scoundrel, cynically exploiting the feel good marketing for the status brought by serving elite political agendas.

Your post reminds me of him. I think you're going to start noticing more and more the way micro male privileges are used to distract from macro class privileges.

100% agree. Men are the vanguards against tyranny. But they are destroying men and fatherhood and with it reshaping our society. Our Achilles heel is the feminist movement and all the laws it entails.

You're not alone, recently I had a heated discussion with my brother and father on the insane quasi-slavery the modern working class is subjected to. My father is a surgeon (I'm not from us, surgeons don't make millions here) and it stroke me how fucking laborious and sad the life of an actually working man ultimately is. The actually essential jobs make like 15% of all the jobs maybe and people doing those jobs are paying ~70% tax combined (PIT, VAT, social security, pension, etc.), in addition to providing essential services to people who basically contribute nothing to society and lead idle and comfy lives. They study and/or work they asses in their 20s, then get married, provide for their wives, pay for the children, do all the errands, help wife's family, then get divorced, ruined financially and die. What a fucking joke, a life of working +60 hours a week all your life, taking mortgage, catering to every wife's need, paying for things you don't really want, just to please your spouse, having no say in anything, getting absolutely no admiration or validation for any of that, fuck it, I'm not signing for this shit

Divide and rule works. It's to keep us all distracted fighting amongst ourselves whilst wealthy elites kick the ladder down.

It's not just the USA. It seems to affect the entire West at this point. In the UK it's the same depressing picture as the USA. The poorer working class are practically forgotten about at this point, even by left leaning parties. They aren't the focus anymore. It's all about better representative at the very top for marginal groups at the top such as female, BAME, LGBTQ. The average working class person isn't going to benefit from any of this, least alone men.

Butting in to say “play Disco Elysium”. That game has a leftist message that is very conscious in its association of femininity with the status quo, capitalism, and nicely-worded institutional rot. Meanwhile masculinity is associated with real attempts at social change. However, the game doesn’t go as far as saying “men good women bad”, and in fact actively makes fun of men who make hating women their whole thing.
