In reality?

NOTHING.

It is based on a theory from a study of wolf pack behaviors among wolves in captivity. After it was published into a book, the researched subsequently tried to replicate his results in the wild...and couldn't. Turns out it was just something that wolves in captivity do for some reason. In the wild, the whole "Alpha/Beta/etc" structure simply doesn't exist.

But that hasn't stopped dudebros from using it to justify them being massive assholes because "I'm just an alpha".

A lot of folks correctly pointed out that the "alpha wolf" thing is complete bullshit, but I think when Red-pillers talk about alphas, I think they are thinking of a human version of an alpha elephant seal, which unlike the alpha-wolf, alpha-seals do exist. There was even an episode of Futurama about the alpha/beta males of elephant seals!

Though just because female elephant seals like the most obnoxious and aggressive male seal, humans are not elephant seals and behave very differently!

Im gonna forget all actual definitions that exist and give what i perceive it to be. A person who is wise, experienced, decisive, fearless etc. Basically all traits you will find in a good leader.

At this point it means nothing. In nature an alpha is the leader of the tribe or pack. The alpha is looked to by others because the alpha does the most work and has the most empathy. An alpha does not have to act like they're the alpha. In fact really the alpha has the most humility and simply accepts the role, it's not sought after.

If a guy unironically calls himself an alpha I would probably clown him. At this point I'm over self promoted titles of all sorts. How ppl view and treat you is the reality of who you are.

I think what they really mean is authoritarian. They worship angry, aggressive, simpleminded guys who want to punish women for basically existing as independent humans ("women must be held accountable!!!!" etc). You can tell because the kind of guys they hate are the opposite, like caring, open-minded dudes who can take another persons perspective and who understand nuance and don't really want to punish anyone for anything - those people are traitors to "the cause". The cause is apparently reducing the morale and status of anyone remotely feminine (including certain men) so they can strip society down to a fictional vision of the 1950's. Might is right, compassion is weakness, complexity is intolerable.

It means nothing. The guy who came up with the whole alpha/beta thing was studying wolves, and he eventually realized it wasn’t correct.

In any culture, there are agreed upon words and conventions. I think people get off track when they get into whether or not wolves in the wild or any other type of animal actually has an alpha male.

It's just a way of describing a certain mindset. Alpha traits are to do what you think is correct without feeling a need to supplicate or get approval, while beta is the opposite, needing to run your choices and positions by what other people like.

Obviously, it's about strength of character, since needing approval is a weaker position, and has less to do with being macho, muscular or boisterous, as the simplified caricature of the alpha male usually winds up being understood, both by proponents and and detractors.

Is it a silly term? Sure, just like the red pill itself. but in modern western society where people spend a lot more time watching movies and shows than having referential life experiences, these childish comic bookish ways of understanding things are going to be pervasive no matter which way you turn.

Manosphere is an absurd word, but you're no escaping corniness by going the other way, either.
