Priorities: Name change > Divorce rape

[–]SarcasticGenZTeen 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What exactly is “divorce rape”?

[–]OldEgalitarianMRA 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A bunch of strange women. From the article:

A 2016 survey showed that 90 per cent of British women take their husband’s last name to replace their maiden name after getting married.

The real point of the article:
But questions around whether the tradition should continue have been hotly debated online in recent months.

Influencers failing to influence.

[–]tenchineuro 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • It made no real sense at all: I was already a part of my (then) husband’s family, so why did I need to give up the name that had carried me since birth? And so, I put it right (or, as I see it: righted a wrong). I changed my name back by deed poll for the paltry sum of £36 – and immediately felt like “me” again. I would urge every woman to do the same.

But then...

  • I celebrate those who are trying to subvert tradition, such as Lewis Hamilton – the seven-time world champion announced in March that he was changing his name to honour his mother’s surname: Larbalestier. He said he made the decision partly “because I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name”. If only all Britons were so progressive.

So apparently it's bad for a women to take her husbands name and progressive when a man takes a woman's name.

[–]Warder766312 37 points38 points39 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This is perfectly fine with me. If she doesn’t want the name, then there are a few other traditional things we should get rid of. How about the wedding ceremony in general? Make it just a trip to the court house. How about getting rid of the whole ring thing too since that’s practically a link of a chain signifying slavery.

[–]Clemicus[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In other words: How to damage marriage further. I don't get your last point. You're equating a wedding ring to slavery

[–]BrobdingnagianMember 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's playing off the chattel comment from the OP.

[–]Clemicus[S] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I couldn't tell if it was serious or not. Yeah, that's why I put it in the title. There's nothing left. Might as well dissolve Marriage and replace it with Civil Partnerships

[–]tenchineuro 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You're equating a wedding ring to slavery

It's kinda the Western version of Dowry.

Not to mention that diamonds are so common you can buy them on every street corner, and they are priced like they are extremely rare. And they don't have much resale value, so they don't even do the job they are supposed to do.

[–]3-1-3-mamma 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep. Just keep your father’s name. Or your grandfather’s.

Wtf

[–]BeepBeepYeah7789 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's the part that keeps getting lost on them.

[–]hehimCA 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Men should just not get married. Problem solved.

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

No one forced them. And prenups are effective if done correctly if you feel the need to get one.

[–]tenchineuro 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And prenups are effective if done correctly

From what I understand any judge can nullify a prenup with no reason. And if there are children, well it's worthless from the get-go.

[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Your understanding, and the common feedback here, is wrong. It can be voided, but only if it’s not done correctly. For instance if the spouse was forced to sign it under duress or if it was completely lopsided. It’s not a way to protect 100% of assets but it can certainly protect the majority of them.

[–]auMatech 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

All a woman needs to do to void it is to claim DV or rape. Any judge will throw out the prenup, even if done 'correctly'

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’re wrong.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you’d like to provide some examples, I’m happy. To review them. Having said that, I did look at this already. My original comment is a prenup that is CORRECTLY built, will hold up in court.

[–]springy 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Men get married because they fall for the sales presentation. That sweet, caring, good looking, and fun woman you are dating is best behaviour to intice you into marriage. It is quite astonishing how quickly a feminine woman can mutate into Jabba the Hutt, in both looks and personality, once the wedding ring is on her finger. My advice to all men is to keep looking at unmarried women as saleswomen and to be wary of the sales presentation.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How sad that you think this is true.

[–]springy 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"We don't need to recruit!" --MGTOW

[–]Sininenn 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No one is forcing women to change their name.

Tradtions are normalized and common, yes, but nobodh enforces them.

This is a non-issue, and every individual couple should do what they feel best for them, and leave every other person to do as they wish.

[–]NoBrick444 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How bout just getting rid of the ceremony too, and the white dress, cuz god knows you can't find 3 wise men or a virgin at a wedding.

[–]springy 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I have noticed that a lot of strong and independent women are simply selfish, with a "that's mine!" attitude. For example, "I ain't giving up my name for no man". Their attitude is quite different towards anything the man has, however. Just look at how many women believe "what I earn is mine but what he earns is ours".

[–]Kindly-Town 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men with mass fortune won't tolerate your grandfather's surname. They want to keep their legacy going. Marry men who don't have this preference but they are not going to be extremely rich as a consequence.

[–]asura227 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

TLDR: If we end the practice of marriage, we will end feminism.

NO MAN SHOULD GET MARRIED! Problem solved. I've said it a few times and I'll say it again. The young feminist, "needs no man". So she stomps about, screaming, protesting, and collecting bodies. Then sometime after the wrinkles start to appear, life needs start to become more important. Then they want financial stability. Well gender studies doesn't offer much in the way of financial self-sufficiency. Most men who are looking to marry don't want a "public bicycle" or "bus route". Financial stability in this context is simply somebody else to pay for shit. When you see it for what it is, relationships with these women are nothing but a thin veneer for them having a man pay. If you pay attention (which is free) this only goes two ways.

The lucky ones find their ATM, the relationship sours over time and the man reaches the apex of what feminism plans for him; he has to give her money but no longer receives any benefit from the relationship. Now it's just another bill coupled with her disgusting actual attitude, not the sweet illusion who seduced the man in the beginning.

The unlucky ones don't find their ATM in time. They become undesirable and that makes them bitter which in turn makes them even MORE undesirable. These are the ones that feel they have the right to critique men's preferences. We can't prefer skinny women because these wall-crashers are mostly over weight. We can't prefer younger women because these wall crashers are on the verge of their baby factory closing or producing defective humans.

The need of men and the treatment of that need is quite literally the pendulum upon which feminists swing. To this writer it becomes evident that the only way forward for men is to put a total, 100% across the board moratorium on marriage, cohabitation relationships, and payments to women outside of legitimate business. Arguing won't work, you're a misogynist. Protest won't work, you're a part of the patriarchy. There is no other solution other than allowing these women to die alone. I know that no one will listen. At least now the readers of this little blurb can't say that they weren't told.

Do not marry. Do not live in the same dwelling because after a time it can be considered common-law marriage. Do not pay for women, not even "working girls". Do not charitably give them money.

[–]SnooJokes1401 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Great job women! Now let's talk about condom dumping

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

And whose name will the children get? If they can't agree on a family name by marriage, they won't agree on it later, either. And that potentially signifies a much deeper problem with a relationship where people want to be independent in a family. That's not how it works and the idea is one of the leading causes of divorce. People aren't willing to compromise even the slightest and find common grounds, bad for everybody and horrible for the children. If somebody doesn't want to be married, just don't get married.

[–]Impressive-Coat-22 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So the definition of compromise is somewhat that of finding a middle ground, right? But why is the last name always expected to come from a father? I don't believe there's an issue with it at all, but there's no compromise that I see here🙂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It doesn't matter where it comes from but it has to come from somewhere, the family has to have a single name. Some people do hyphen their names but that's also not a solution for everybody since you can't just keep attaching names on names as some royalty from the middle ages.

[–]Impressive-Coat-22 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, partners do not have to have a joint name in order for kids to have a sole last name. For example, some people in my country keep their own last names each and decide what kid's last name will be. And I mean to say it with all due respect, but if you divorce your partner in nasty circumastances, the last thing you want to have is their last name. And changing it AGAIN comes with a whole another set of headaches.

[–]fear_the_future 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't want to change my name either. Would be nice if both persons could just keep their old name, but unfortunately the bureaucracy in my country can't deal with that in many cases.

[–]AzLibDem 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't call it an absolute deal-breaker, but it's certainly a major red flag about how she views marriage in the first place.

[–]BrokeMacMountain 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am fine with this. Of course women should keep teir own name. And lets not forget, Marriage is all about the woman. Its is her special deay that she dreamed about since childhood. She chooses the location, the style, the colour scheme, the dresses the guests everything. it is ALL about her, on her special day.

All the man does is pay for it. So, in the name of equality as weddings are all about the woman, i think women should pay for their weddings.

The idea that men should pay is old and archiac and possibly sexist anyway. So lets help empower women by letting * them* pay for their dream day.

In some countries, the child takes the mother's name by default. Sometimes it's also possible to combine mum and dad's last names for the child

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s either nuclear family/marriage till the end or nothing at all.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

"Be independent and keep your dad's name"

[–]Impressive-Coat-22 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

But at least it's your dad's and yours since birth. A part of your identity if you will. It'd be weird having a different surname if I all of a sudden had to change it. It's like being called Mary after 25 years of being Nicole😆. But genuinely speaking, nothing is wrong with either taking the partner's last name or keeping your own. It's an individual choice after all. Oh, and all the headaches with having to change your passport, driver's licence etc is brutal😂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Of course it is, but claiming it's done for independence sounds ridiculous.

[–]Impressive-Coat-22 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't dig the independence claim in any situation l, so agreed. Just saying it's not the only reason people don't wanna have their spouse's last name.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Idea: Make your own family name when you start a family. What do you think?

[–]Impressive-Coat-22 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't find it necessary. It's an option for people who want that, but I would not love an unfamiliar sounding name to grace my passport, like ever😆 I definitely think spouses should have a conversation on which family name they want to pass down to their kids. It's just some people have a stick up their ass when it comes to last names as 'legacy' which triggers me a tiny bit🤭

[–]jadedlonewolf89 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or write whatever the he’ll you want on your marriage certificate which is one way to legally change your name.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have no argument against that, because it's right, so I will try to shame you for using autocorrect.

[–]Sailbad_the_Sinner30 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

And this is a problem, why, exactly?

Here in Brazil, we’ve been doing composite names for kids since, like, forever. Last I checked, we aren’t particularly noted for women being dominant in our society.

Also, what’s wrong with being independent in a family? That’s how mine have always worked and they work fine. A family does not have to be a little fascist corporate lock-step unit led by a mini Duce. There’s plenty of room in families for independence AND cooperation.

This is really weak tea as a “men’s issue”.

[–]Clemicus[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And this is a problem, why, exactly?

I'm assuming you're referencing double-barrelled surnames and also assuming you went beyond the title and read the article. My issue with the article isn't a singular point

Also, what’s wrong with being independent in a family? That’s how mine have always worked and they work fine.

Where's that written or implied?

A family does not have to be a little fascist corporate lock-step unit led by a mini Duce. There’s plenty of room in families for independence AND cooperation.

Are you using a online translator? If you are, you just stated husbands are little marching corporate fascist leaders 🤨

How could there be cooperation with lil fascist Mr. Shouty and his baton?

Here in Brazil, we’ve been doing composite names for kids since, like, forever.

And? There are different societies, with different cultures around the world

Last I checked, we aren’t particularly noted for women being dominant in our society.

You're from Brazil and I'm from the UK. So do you mean your society or some other society? Or society in general all across the world?

Dominant is a bit of a weird word to use in that context. So I'm assuming you mean equal

It'd really depend how that's being quantified

[–]Sailbad_the_Sinner30 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I am also responding to comments. There’s a guy above saying that families and independence don’t go together.

I mean Brazil. We have been doing composite names forever and it’s hardly created a better situation for women or a worse one for men.

[–]Clemicus[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Directly reply to that person. I thought you were addressing me since I posted this

I mean Brazil. We have been doing composite names forever and it’s hardly created a better situation for women or a worse one for men.

I'll take that to mean there's no difference, or at least not a significant one

Edit: Not a significant one*
