I have been considering divorce for a couple years and unfortunately never jumped on it. I have been coming to this reddit for a long time, and always start typing because I want to tell my story. But it becomes so long because there are so many issues in our relationship. She is such a toxic person. I am not going to do that this time. I will keep it short.

We have 2 kids (1 & 2) of our own and she has 2 kids from a previous marriage (13 & 15). I don't want to go into more detail on this or else it will become of of my long posts that I end up not posting.

I am military making about 120k/yr, she works for minimum wage. We live in Virginia.

Right now I would prefer the kids to be in school before I file for divorce, but my emotional state is getting worst and worst. I really think she is preparing for divorce herself and is trying to push me into doing something stupid. So I want to prepare now

One thing to note is she is smart. Very very smart and charming. She can change her personality in an instant and make anyone love her. She also has a photographic memory and can recall every transgression I may have made.

- How do I financially prepare? I know I shouldn't empty the accounts, but should I start stashing cash?

- How are assets split? How does the court determine what is marital assets and what I had before? Say our net worth is 500k now, but mine alone was 300k before I married. Will we split the 200k, or can she get ahold of half the 500k?

- We have 3 houses, will the judge make us sell them and split the money? We are both on the deed for the 3 houses.

- We currently live in an expensive house that is way to big. Could the judge make me pay for the house while she lives there? Or is it more likely the judge makes us sell it and makes us both move elsewhere? I am afraid she will charm the judge into letting her keep the house (2500/m) as well as alimony and child support.

- I have 2 kids with her. I would argue I should have more custody than her. What do I need to do to make this happen? I know the judge is more likely to award the wife with more. Does character without proof have anything to do with it? I would argue my character is better suited, but there is no definitive proof of that other than little stories I could tell. Same with her, thought she would probably manipulate her kids to say bad things about me. She also has the 2 other kids. If she had more custody, that would be 4 kids for her to look after by herself. How do these custody things usually go down?

- I have tried to get her to do counseling with me in the past, she never does. She is perfect and I am the problem remember? Would it look good on me to try again?

- How much is character a part of divorce hearings? How much does the judge want to hear about little arguments or times that might indicate neglect? If there is no proof, is the judge still going to want to hear about some random time she went to the store while leaving the kids at home? Is the judge going to listen to her talking about the one time I yelled at her? I could go into her parenting style, or what a typical day with her is like, or how she is always on her phone while the kids are screaming for attention. How she always yells at them. But I sound like a robot when I talk, she is charming and is more capable of lying. Do I need to start journaling the bad things she does? How do I prepare for this?

- How do I find the right lawyer?

- What is "separation" and should we try that first?

I am being emotionally abused.

For years I thought I was crazy. I tried to talk to her about our relationship and every time she would blow up and make me feel so small. So maybe it really was me? I poured over developmental books and self help books. I made journals and just kept thinking of strategies to make things better. I did this for the past 5 years. I looked at marriage and relationship strategies, and nothing fit. Until I started to notice a pattern. I looked it up and was put onto "Covert Narcissist". I was introduced to gaslighting and manipulation that goes on in relationships. I couldn't tell you how good it felt to put a name to it. I couldn't stop reading. I took strategies and used them, and they worked! It didn't make the relationship better, but it helped me navigate the toxic conversations. I felt like I put some glasses on and could now see her for what she really is. I know I am not a professional, but I truly think she has this personality disorder. And I know how to read things without bias. So when it says you are a narcissist when you do "this", I didn't say to myself, she did that once a couple months ago, that's her! I kept that low level thinking out of it. Anyway, she is a level 9000 covert narcissist. I have so many examples of things she does on a daily basis that justify my why. Possibly I will write them down, but I doubt a lawyer or a judge care.

edit: Just realized she gets 50% of my military retirement if we are married for 10 years, which is 3 years away. Retirement is 5 years. So she may be waiting for that good paycheck .
