What if wife makes 93k and I make 200 in NJ. Married for 8 years. How much alimony I can negotiate at once or how much I have to pay every month. Pls advise

This is easy. NJ resident here, (44M) divorced in in 2018 married 10 years. I made more but she worked (but honestly don’t think it matters in NJ). They will assign her a base income of like $35K or so. They will take 1/3 of the delta between your salaries and that’s your annual alimony. So if you make $150K, and they use $35K for her, you have a $115K delta. Divide by 3. That’s $38,333 per year. My ex wife initiated the negotiations with me at 5 years of alimony. (Again, we were married 10). I countered at 6 years for lower payments in hopes she would also co-habitate bf 6 years was up and I’d be free. Never happened. I have 18 months left before freedom!

Basically NJ is very straightforward. You should expect alimony for 1/2 the years you were married.

As for trying to reduce your income now…too late. They will look at 2020 and 2021.

If you have children, any spouse can motion for a child support review every 3 years. So that’s another issue. My child support went way up bc I thrives in 2020 and 2021 since I’m in real estate. Good luck and DM me if you have any more questions.

I have spoken to 4 lawyers in NJ … all thee basically told me the same … they go back 2-3 years. I am in the same boat. I work a lot of overtime so I have been cutting down … year for year … so 15 years and 25% of the difference on the gross, but you pay after taxes … so it freak’s sucks …. Have read you can try to get that 25% down to 20-22%. But hard. I am a high earner married to a low earner for 24 years so I am totally screwed

You can try to claim 80 hours is excessive but they will likely go by W2. Take a break from work for a couple years and file for divorce, unlikely you'll be imputed at higher wage

I was married a little over 10 year and a high wage earner, settled for 6 years of alimony. Over 10 years of marriage and all bets are off in NJ but fight to stay about half of married years.

Former resident with several friends still there. It's up to a judge but for 15 years and she doesn't work... they could nail you to the cross with permanent, depending on circumstances. If she's sick, you have good earning potential and she doesn't, documented infidelity or a criminal record on your side no hers... yeah ouch city.

Your OT potential in the future will be irrelevant, sadly it's about established quality of life. If you have kids, you should expect the worst. Child free you may have far less to worry about.

my husband is the sweetest man and she absolutely tortured him when she had him arrested made him lose his job drove her car at my daughter attacked me on and on and we eventually moved away and are very happy and blessed but she is a demon gave us both PTSD. We've lived in Harlem for 16 years and got much tougher. well I did - he's still a pussy! Anyway ... glad NJ made changes!!!!
