Although I am "demographically challenged", it was tough in the past. I wouldn't count on someone "seeing the light" or becoming religious.

You may spend years hoping and it will tear up a semblance of a relationship quick.

No I never dated outside of my religion entirely. My fiancé is Catholic and I’m Lutheran, but we go to a Catholic Church now and we will raise our children Catholic.

If you’re religious then it’s an important part of who you are I’m sure you want to share that with your partner and your children. I think it would be difficult for your marriage. But are you dating to marry or dating to date? Also dating a coworker is a bad idea so unless this is leading for sure to a LTR it’s gonna be awkward at work.

If you are traditionally Catholic, why would you want to go against St Paul’s clear teachings about the importance of being equally yoked? Honest question. The Bible is pretty clear about marrying outside of the faith- it says not to do it. Something to think about.

From my parents’ interfaith marriage (my mother Lutheran, my dad raised Catholic but agnostic/atheist), it led to a lot of conflict between them, my mother eventually deciding to drop church altogether, and a ton of confusion in my childhood. I eventually accepted Christ in my 20s and frankly I do not credit my mom with helping in that.

I’m now married to a fellow Christian and it’s great. We talk about scripture together, are on the same page about how to raise our kids, both volunteer at church, and have deep relationships with other Christians from church.

So yeah I don’t recommend interfaith marriage based on what the Bible says about it, my experience being raised in that kind of marriage, and my experience being married to another Christian.

I have dated outside of my religion quite often and I can say it just depends on both people as to if it’s an issue or not. For it to work, both people have to respect each other’s point of view and not expect to change them. Long-term, many people want to participate in traditions together so it’s helpful to participate in one another’s traditions as much as possible even if you don’t agree. It really just depends on the expectations people have and becomes something you need to agree on regarding how you would raise your children if you get serious.

I grew up in a multi religious family (due to generations of inter-religious and interracial marriages). All my romantic relationships have followed this.

From personal experience and observation, for a relationship like this to succeed, it rests on mutual respect for each others religious views. Religion aside, you do need commonalities in terms of basic moral principles, core values (ie honesty, trust, openness etc). You both should have the same vision for your futures.

One person shouldn’t try to hold sway over another because it creates conflict. Or there’s the alternative that one person converts but I’m not a fan of this approach because faith shouldn’t be forced upon.

I’m very much agnostic leaning into Eastern philosophy (but raised in a much more conservative religion) and my partner is raised Catholic (though became atheist as an adult). But we’re both happy for our kids to be raised within the Church because we feel that good values are universal and let them choose their convictions later on when they become adults. We don’t mind as long as they are happy.

In a nutshell, dating someone from a different religion can go either way. If you’re both compatible in basic values and respect one another’s religions- I think it’s fine. But this comes without the expectation that one would change for the other. If done so, would be on their own volition.

Equally, it can also be very hard when families get involved. It’s really important that you as a couple stand firm on your decisions (whatever they are) and support the other person.

I’m married to a man who is catholic, practicing and not just culturally/in name (for what it’s worth this is an important distinction, he’s not a Christmas catholic or even a ‘just on Sunday we go to mass’ catholic. He prays the rosary every day, doesn’t eat meat on fridays, etc). I grew up in an eastern religion but don’t really practice any religion as I haven’t felt the strong tie to faith as he has. For this reason, we practice his traditions and our son will be raised catholic. I’ll be bringing him to mass once he’s old enough (he’s only a newborn now!) and will whole heartedly support my husband in however he sees fit. Unless I have a religious epiphany, I don’t see myself converting just for the sake of saying we’re all the same religion. I truly believe you need to have true faith before you ever choose to take on the huge decision to convert.

This is the only way a relationship like this can work. I believe the onus is on the person who is less/non-practicing to whole heartedly participate in the traditions of the person who is of faith. You should figure out in this vetting stage if he’s the type of atheist to have no objections to participating in your religion or if he’s the type to object (for example, how would he feel about your children being baptized? Would he attend mass with you or prefer to skip it and have you and your children attend on your own?).

It has its challenges, yes, and don't expect anyone to convert. Don't picture anyone making major changes for marriage in general. Marry someone you would be happy with if they stayed pretty much the same.

My husband is Protestant and I'm Catholic. He agreed to marry in the Church and raise the kids Catholic, but we have disagreements about my faith all the time. But that's partly due to his personality. He's not really an "agree to disagree" kind of guy.

The odds are not in your favor though. Maybe not impossible but definitely not easy.

Something you might not know, men and women evaluate potential partners differently. Women look at the potential of a man, but men look at women as they are at that home to feed her. Yes or no they don’t look at what she might possibly become or grow into later.

If you're okay with being different in that regard it's fine. If you're going in hoping they'll change that's a recipe for mutual misery.
