Great a women form Surrey from an upper middle class background get £1,250. Whilst a guy from Newcastle from a working class background gets nothing.

My bet is this will cause a lot of bad feeling amongst engineers.

This is outrageous. Approximately 60% of undergraduates are female.

Males are under represented in: Microbiology. Biology Biochemistry Medicine.

Only 10% of primary school teachers are male

Less than 15% of nurses are male.

Postgraduate nursing has no males at all.

This is far worse and damaging for society.

Sorry but, so-fucking-what? You choose your degree around 18, so largely these are adult women choosing their education, there is no barrier stopping them choosing engineering (except for prerequisite A levels) and the cost wasn't a factor in deciding on what specific course.

This "everything 50%" rule is ridiculous. I wont be the only one ending up seeing these grads as "affirmative action" and they'll get no respect for it!

Add to this that these girls are already doing, or are going to have to do, an undergrad in engineering anyway... and, given that many engineers have bachelors degrees, these girls could have got an engineering job anyway. they might have even already decided they wanted an engineering job in the first place! So who are you encouraging into engineering?? You don't do a BEng for shits and giggles, and an MEng grad might still teach or go into banking or other non-engineering profession.

When I first joined reddit I posted anecdotal evidence which said pretty much the same thing. I studied CS in the UK. Women would get scholarships, bursaries and prizes for being in IT.

We even had one class called "women in IT" and how hard it was for them with no role models and it was all men's fault for father's not taking interest in their daughters.

Once they complete their degree, almost all women got either offered their first choice in internships. Got job offers first go make up quotas. And I know that they got marked easier as I used to help them with their coursework.

That being said, after a few years, the ones I kept up with, they often dropped out of their choice positions, because they couldn't handle the actual requirements of the job as everything had been gifted to them.

But guys that have invested their whole lives in engineering , I.e. by things like picking up programming before they even hit school, get overlooked , and skills downplayed. Modern society is toxic to the workhorses that build the foundations.

"Bluntly speaking, that has to change if UK engineering is going to continue to compete as successfully as it currently does.

This is a basic failure of critical thinking.

Saying "we need more engineers to remain competitive" is a reasonable claim. Pointing to the composition of engineers and saying that has to change to remain competitive doesn't follow.

You could double the number of engineers and keep the same composition and be more competitive.

Ms Gratton added that the project would explore what holds back female engineers "from realising their full career potential".

I'm betting they won't be considering that those women themselves might be the reason because of a different set of priorities and incentives.

"Every British engineering company will tell you they face crippling skills shortages and without radical action that can only get worse."

That's an argument for having more engineers, not increasing representation of any particular group among engineers.

"At advanced level, engineering is very much an office-based profession, where the emphasis is working with teams on a collaborative basis. These skills are areas where women have traditionally excelled."

Except apparently in engineering, and that doesn't mean male engineers are worse than female engineers at doing these things.

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said: "Postgraduate study is good for students, good for universities and good for the economy.

Anyone who thinks this is universally true doesn't understand economics. There is such a thing as a bad investment.

A separate project at Brunel, supported by industrial partners including BP and Network Rail, will fund both male and female students on a multi-disciplinary master's course focused on real life engineering problems.

Now one wonders why Brunei's program is for both sexes.

I wonder how many of these grant-recievers are going to complete their studies, while men have to will have to hold jobs in the meantime to complete the same degree. If they want to choose to be engineers, let them, there's nothing stopping them, but if we're gonna pull shit like this can I apply to nursing school and get a stipend.

Since when did an inanimate object take on special properties when it is designed by women? I would have thought that just more engineers are needed to make the UK more competitive. Regardless of the gender of those engineers. How exactly is the sex of the engineer related to increased competitiveness?.

If female engineers require more money from the state to get to a level required for the engineering field to be more competitive, doesn't this actually mean that the field is less competitive due to higher costs ?

This does nothing for gender equality. Now the men working with these women will know that the women received extra help just because of their gender.

If a group of people is strong and empowered why should they expect to get handouts from other groups?
