Like "Rape Culture" it might not actually be that bad a concept if applied properly, it's just that feminists appear to be applying the concept backwards. After all, "rape culture" appears to apply far more appropriately to the rape of males. Men getting raped in prison are portrayed as getting their comeuppance, men being raped by women are called gay and are not taken seriously by government institutions, etc.

Meanwhile, many of the things which feminists call male privilege seem to be more attributable to benevolent sexism, IE that men are getting an advantage in some way from being treated worse than women. As an example, GWW mentioned at one point that women couldn't historically get housing as easily as men because they couldn't get bank loans, but why couldn't they get bank loans? Because presumably they couldn't be held accountable to a debt. In other words, it would be women's privilege to not be held responsible for a debt that prevented them from taking on debt to purchase a house.

(And that example wasn't even low-hanging fruit.)

Oh, I have. We've been together 4 years, and we're getting married within two months :D

She met me at a shit time in my life when I was unemployed for about a year. That didn't dissuade her from continuing to see me, so I am convinced I can trust her not to take advantage of my vulnerability in a divorce court should it ever go that way (it won't). We're both adamantly decided on the side of having zero kids. She comes from women's studies (as an elective to her major in a STEM field), so the conversations we have about gender equality issues get very interesting. She is completely unselfish, and she makes me want to be that way with her, which is historically uncharacteristic of me in relationships after I had my "no more mister nice guy" moment. I can be vulnerable with her. The biggest thing? I fucking love her. Couldn't not. That's just the way it is.

What biologically deterministic view of men and women? I believe that rape is a dysfunctional behaviour that is a result of trauma.

People don't "misunderstand consent"; they actively seek rape as a form of "compulsion to repeat."

I believe this demonizes men because it presumes men somehow will rape if they're not taught what "consent" means when I believe all people, absent trauma, will not rape.

And also it demonizes men because it fails to recognize that women rape too.

In your eyes men are nothing but drones programmed by their genetics to either be rapists or not be rapists - which is blatant nonsense.

You obviously know nothing about my views. Where did you get all this inferred bullcrap from?

I don't think you can call that "Rape Culture".

That is simply the different opinions of the people in that area. The fact that a few people in the area (for whatever reason, and bear in mind, we don't know the reasoning behind why people reacted the way they did, but I imagine the reasons are as varied as the people themselves) You are ASSUMING that the people who defended the guys are pro-rape. Assuming is dangerous. You don't actually know the reason why certain people defended the boys. Perhaps they didn't believe they had actually done it at the time?

You can't conflate regular people voicing their opinions with "rape culture". Rape culture requires that those people defending the boys be okay with, and even encourage rape. That never happened, therefore the term "rape culture" is NOT accurate in this case either.

People are people. Normal people abhor rape, but people have differing opinions, that doesn't mean they support rape.

The problem is, you are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. You are trying to define rape culture by cherry picking examples. It doesn't work that way.

There was no culture of rape in Steubenville. There were people who were wrong about the boys innocence (These are not rape supporters), there were people who felt the girl was lying (again, there's no evidence of rape culture here, just normal people) And in any given scenario that causes fiery emotions like this in people, there are those who make empty threats and are all around unpleasant.(Again, there is no evidence of rape culture here either, just angry people)

You seem to be trying very hard to fit an incident to the definition "Rape Culture", when you should be approaching it in the opposite way. You should try to fit the definition to the situation. Problem is, there is no situations in North America in the last little while that fit the definition of "rape culture".

It simply doesn't exist in the way you say it does. It's a buzz term. It was created to fuel sensationalism. And you've bought into it hook, line and sinker.
