I can actually relate a lot to the japanese youth, especially when they say they "can't be bothered". However in the western world this mindset is pretty rare and is often met with... let's say "unproductive" reactions. And the more I feel pressured or forced into this the more I just... "can't be bothered".

In the Japan Family Planning Association's 2013 study on sex among young people, there was far more data on men than women. I asked the association's head, Kunio Kitamura, why. "Sexual drive comes from males," said the man who advises the government. "Females do not experience the same levels of desire."

Seriously? I'm not blaming the government for all of this (I'm blaming urban overcrowding first and foremost), but a society whose family planning expert doesn't understand that women like to fuck is not going to helpful in increasing the overall level of fucking.

There's a lot of sexual dysfunction in Japan. Another major issue they've had to deal with is widespread cases of no sex after children / sexless marriages, leading to what they call "compensated dating" (basically, ad hoc prostitution by high school girls sought out by rich, undersexed salarymen).

Maybe stuff like this is an instinctual behaviour as way of trying to control our population.

A simple explanation would be that jobs are very tight and very competitive, plus if you don't have a career your a nobody - most people would struggle in these conditions to sustain a love life.

Another could be that the cost of living is so high only the rich can afford kids, but they live in the most expensive areas and struggle too.

Passive aggression could have just become a typical character trait, perhaps because straight forward aggression is so taboo.

It seems like the article is really forcing a certain view point.

At the same time being single is far preferable to being married in regard to personal happiness, if someone comes up with some way to still have kids perhaps Japan would be the perfect market.

If I wasn't married articles like this would really entice me to go over, just out of curiosity. I have actually been, not that long ago, the women I dated seemed to have very traditional expectations.

Japan's economy and businesses are stagnant and institutionalized and (in the case of most business entitles) government-privileged. The culture of Japan's elders is rigid, conservative and conformist.

Basically, the political-economic Powers That Be don't want to budge. They don't want to abandon the Salaryman model (roughly analagous to the idealized image of 50's American suburbia), or question sacred values like conformity and duty. To quote the linked article: "Aoyama says she sees daily that people crave human warmth, even if they don't want the hassle of marriage or a long-term relationship. She berates the government for "making it hard for single people to live however they want.""

But the younger generation has had enough and have decided to prioritize personal fulfillment and happiness. When the Powers That Be basically mandate a family structure and work-life model that conflicts with personal fulfillment and happiness, the younger generation chooses fulfillment and happiness over the mandated family structure.

Hopefully, the demographic crisis will make the Japanese Powers That Be realize that an acceptance of flexibility and reform is critical to a modern, dynamic society.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding this. Sex is really terrific. It's a physical release, it's nice to do something pleasurable with someone you like, and it can be a really important part of a larger romantic relationship. Where are these kids getting the idea that sex isn't good or worth it? Are they just allowing social anxiety to get to them? I almost hate to say it, and this could come off a bit insensitive, but they sound a bit like the virgin in college, the person pretending to be a straight arrow but that's really just terrified of sex because they've built it up in their mind as this incredibly important thing.

Sex really isn't complicated, and there's no reason it has to be hectic or anxiety-ridden.

All that having been said, after reading the article, it's unclear how this is a men's issue alone. The article seemed to suggest that this is a cultural trend in young men and women. This seems more a sociology of gender thing or perhaps a psychology thing. While oppression and privilege could be involved, they don't seem to be central to the problem.

Are you serious? Just how many overambitious women work under salary? Is working for someone else a promising career? I understand the cost of life is high and you need to work to sustain and that you might lose your job if you marry, but I was under the impression that marrying also came with the benefit of shared finances.
