While I agree that over-political correctness continues to be a workplace issue that creates undue tension for men who are simply trying to be nice, or cordial, Tony Abbott was clearly in the wrong with his comments. He is introducing a candidate of his party to the public and making any comment as to her looks is unnecessary and inappropriate. She's a politician, not a model, and her job in no way requires her physical appearance to be called into question. If she happens to be attractive, that's great, he should pay her a compliment in private when he isn't in a professional setting on TV. If my boss happened to say to a group of senior managers during a meeting that I was "more than a pretty face" or that I had "sex appeal" I would be offput, because my work could be done regardless of how I looked. At no point should a politician ever be promoted by their party leader on basis of their sex appeal, and that's why Mr. Abbott generated controversy over his statement.

These kinds of things annoy me, and I feel they're every bit as detrimental to women as they are to men. I give people compliments when I see they put effort into something. I will compliment a male friend on a sharp outfit just as often as I will compliment a woman on hers.

It's really degrading to men that people assume the only reason we'd compliment a woman is because we want sex. I give people compliments because it makes them feel good and helps their self esteem.

Well, its kind of irrelevant to the matter at hand, but why would you feed someone's ego like that? Men -- don't do that. Never, ever compliment a woman EVER. They already have inflated egos. Fuck, don't even compliment your significant others (if you are foolish enough to be in a relationship with a woman. That's just giving someone power to have you thrown in prison and/or force you to pay for their lifestyle choices).

So, when your parents tell you that you look dashing before prom.. They are engaging in incest. There goes my youth. I thought they were complimenting me on being a complete human.. but now I can claim sexual trauma.

When I see my grandmother, and let her know that her new haircut makes her look younger.. oh yeah.. you guessed it. My prior abuse is turning me into a deviant. It's like prom all over again, but now I'm the monster.

I hope I never say anything too complimentary about my daughter.. That'd be the final straw for me. I'd have to end it all to stop myself from crossing the line.

Actually, though I don't entirely agree, I think the author has stumbled onto some truths here. I especially like this part.

Girlwriteswhat actually says something almost identical to this in one of her videos. Women do dress a certain way in order to attract men, it's just that they are only doing it for certain men who they want to attract. Attention they receive from men who they are not looking to attract is unwelcome, and is labeled as "creepy" or "harassment".

Saying that "a compliment is sex" is maybe taking it a bit too far, but I think it would be fair enough to say that complimenting someone's appearance can be taken as a sexual advance, and he is absolutely right that whether it is welcome or not is totally up to the person receiving the compliment.
