More "sexism is only sexism when it's against women" followed by "feminism is for everybody!"

After decades of man hating, the re-branding as “Feminism is for Everyone” doesn’t really hit a chord with many people. Although a laudable concept, it is 30yrs too late.

People are left with feeling this is a last ditch attempt at Feminism trying to regain credibility. The ever present background chorus of “Rape Culture”, “Patriarchy” and “Teaching Men not to Rape” etc., adds to the dis-ingenuousness of this re-branding.

If “beautiful women can get whatever they want,” then why haven’t we elected one president yet?

I love his rhetorical question. Women are the majority of voters. No one is stopping them from voting a woman into office.

“My female boss is mean to me at work” is not the same thing as centuries of institutionalized, systemic discrimination.

Unless there are a bunch of women who have lived for centuries, there is not a woman alive that has been systematically oppressed for centuries.

Well, throughout history there have been several occasions where boys and men have been targeted for genocide for population control and for invaders to kill men of fighting age. Who is going to compensate me for that?

This relies on the fallacy of the excluded middle: all discrimination against men are by individuals, but discrimination against women only is by the (unnamed) patriarchy. Because groups of people do not discriminate against men, there is no need for a men's rights movement.

Except that hidden assumption is demonstrably false. There are many examples of groups of people who discriminate against men. Read some of SAVE services reports for examples.

implying stereotypes is how people differ and what effects this has physically i.e. black people still get sterotyped as less likely to get sunburned, there are no blacks in sunscreen commercials.... OPRESSION!!

implying women are less intelligent than men and that The Pathriarcy™ uses this to opress women. (note, female brains are 10% smaller in physical size and there ARE less females with extremly high IQ but the average intelligence is identical)

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? I am so tired of this attitude. Because women were oppressed before a generation ago doesn't mean that the woman of today are entitled to any sort of compensation. That's like black people today claiming that white people today owe them something because black people used to be slave. God that's fucking stupid. This is common amongst so many women I've met; they don't want equality, they want more power than men.

I was literally in the process of posting this. Luckily, reddit knew it already had been, and stopped. I was simply floored by this author's entry to say that men cannot be the victim of sexism is ludicrous.

This is what sexism looks like in 2013: it’s not “Women sure are worthless and stupid” as much as it is “I’m a good guy who loves and respects women but feminism is evil because the systematic oppression of women doesn’t really exist.”

That's not sexism. This is common sense. There is no systematic oppression of women in the West. Quite the opposite: we grant them more freedoms, fewer responsibilities, and a greater share of our social spending while they control the majority of the vote and are pandered to by all major political parties.

Oh and they get special legal protections not extended to men and even where the law is technically gender neutral they are held to a different standard from men.

The article doesn't claim that sexism is only valid when it affects women, the author provides sexism against women as one example of sexism.

"And the thing is, men are hurt by sexism. Rigid gender roles, for example, aren't healthy for anyone."
