The r/legaladvice thread removed his post for posting personal information and the contributors are basically advising that the OP shut his mouth unless he wants to harm his career in the future. They've made it quite clear that the tricks that the SJWs use to get a platform for redressing their feelings of discrimination are not available to him.

I didn't know hackathons were that easy to win. My friends and I will just identify as women for the next one. It's a guarantee. ;)

On top of this, they did not program anything whatsoever. Rather, they made a bare-bones powerpoint presentation that presented their “idea”. Their “code” that they were talking about in the submission was merely another individual’s project that was copied off of GitHub. They didn’t take any effort to make this copy of the code believable. They didn’t change up the code at all, and they didn’t even try to change the name of the author. They straight up just forked the GitHub repository and called it their own. They blatantly disregarded the rules of the hackathon, yet the judges gave no effort to verify that the rules were followed and just gave the all-girls team 1st place along with $3,000 because, surprise, they were girls… “females in STEM” I guess.

I once helped judge a science fair, I don't think any of the projects were done by the student. Apparently the judges today get a different set of marching orders based on the perceived critical shortfall of women in STEM.

My son wanted to go to one of these, but I did not sign him up for a few reasons, now I'm thinking that had he gone it would have been an unnecessarily negative experience.

Therein lies the rub.

Even if you could prove the judges intentionally circumvented the rules and selected a team that should have been disqualified, the fact you would not have won means you have no monetary damages or grounds to sue. In order to have cause, you would need to show that you suffered a financial loss due to the actions of the judges. People can't sue just to expose something or to force payment to someone else; those people would need to be the ones to bring a suit. It does not sound like you have any recourse here.

I know enough about this type of contest and how they can make a difference to the winners and other participants from bragging rights to networking opportunities. I am not condoning the actions of the judges or organizers if they behaved inappropriately. However, we don't even know enough to determine if that is even the case here without looking at all relevant information.

A hackathon is an experience to build something new within a set amount of time. Therefore, you cannot work on past projects. However, using your own open-source or third party libraries is fine, so long as the project is new.

This is from the FAQ on the HackXEarth website. Have you talked to the judges or anyone associated with the event, to seek clarification about this?

All this aside, hackathons are a complete joke. They’re just pitchfests. It’s always the phoneys that win. The rare hackathons that aren’t like this don’t allow enough time to build anything that actually works anyway, unless you flout the rules and continue existing projects, as I’ve seen countless times.
