It's a very good manslaughter case, but definitely not homicide. I saw the judge on the local news. He said that what she did was clearly immoral and unethical, so should be illegal. Her only hope now is the US Supreme Court, but it's not clear yet if she will remain free during the process.

I don't know how to x-post comments (if that's even possible) so I'll just give /u/Lloyd13z credit and repost it here from /r/DeFranco because I really think it's worth reading. We often don't have all the necessary information and the witch hunt begins before the trial even ends.

Articles like this one leave out 90% of the details of the trial, as did Phil when he originally covered it in 2017. The TL;DR is that you cannot get the full scope of the story, and how the events played out, until you look at Carter and Roy's relationship from the start. And every article and report that fails to do so ends up making Carter look like a demonic evil murderer without merit.

There's a reason Carter got charged with involuntary manslaughter - Roy was suicidal from the start. For as long as their friendship and long-distance relationship existed, Roy was frequently and constantly asking to die. For all the early months, Carter pleaded with him to get help, and for months he refused. He told her not to go to his family and refused to do so himself. He planned to kill himself multiple times, and Carter convinced him out of it every time. And every time, he went back to the same requests to kill himself. In the end, Carter finally gave in, and Roy died. The bottom line is that Roy asked for Carter's assistance in his suicide, rejected her attempts to get the help he needed, and she eventually gave in.

Every article brings up the "she convinced him to get back in the car" part, but fails to mention the texts where Roy asked her not to let him run away from his death. Every article brings up how she encouraged Roy to kill himself by suffocation, but not the part where Roy excitedly talks about how he is going to acquire the CO2 engine and steal the truck himself. Think about that for a second: Carter was NOT with Roy every step of the way. Carter did not provide the tools nor the actions that ultimately killed Roy. Carter was a year younger and had no physical contact with Roy during the entire process of his suicide - you absolutely cannot deny his desire for his own suicide, nor his hand in setting it up. In reality, Roy did everything himself, and used Carter as his motivator, not the other way around. He knew he would get cold feet, and begged Carter to get him to go through with it. If Carter had not helped encourage Roy to die, he would have sought out someone else who would.

Then there's the Facebook angle, which is what Phil defaulted to in his coverage. The idea that Carter did all this just for popularity on Facebook. But that really doesn't add up, because she didn't "brag about it" or do anything to take credit for Roy's death. What actually happened is that Roy made her promise to take care of his funeral and family when he was gone. But she was a 17 year old girl living in a city miles away - how could she possibly do that? So instead she organized a memorial service (which she originally didn't take credit for!) so that people could mourn him. She was doing it because Roy wanted it, not for her own popularity. Then she ended up confessing to a friend on Facebook what her involvement in Roy's suicide was, and that's how she got found out and investigated. But just... to say that she was only doing it for popularity and social status gain is completely invalid, when you look at what she actually did on Facebook and her motive for doing it.

There's real things called caregiver syndrome and compassion fatigue which is what Carter eventually developed. She developed these because Roy convinced her that she was the only one supporting him, and that she HAD to keep supporting him no matter what. After months of trying to help Roy, to get him to talk to family, friends, or a therapist, this naive and stupid teenager decided the only way to make Roy happy was to give him what he kept insisting he wanted: his death. To be clear: She is guilty of involuntary manslaughter. There is no "but" to that fact - she is 100% guilty. I agreed with the ruling then and I agree with the upholding now. The context for her guilt, however, should change the idea of how "pure evil" she is. She was a naive teenager who had no idea what to do in this situation. She developed a mental obsession that made her make a horrible decision. In my opinion, she is a walking tragedy, both in what she did and what was done to her. But that's my take away.

If you want sources, I can try to dig them up. No promises, but the court documents are public record. The only reason I haven't linked them is because it's nearly 1am and I'm recalling a report I wrote in the DeFranco Elite Discord back in 2017. However, I strongly encourage anyone with an open mind to look up all the correspondence (mostly text messages) submitted for evidence in the trial. That will give you enough information to show that Roy wasn't the manipulated victim the reports make him out to be. To be honest, this story depresses me every time it appears because of how much hate gets directed towards Carter. I frequently see people accuse death penalty proponents of having hateful justice boners - the death threats and malice people feel towards Carter is no different, and equally disturbing.

This is definitely wrong and she deserves some jail time but I wouldn't go as far to say that this is homicide. Apparently the boyfriend had used threats of suicide against her in the past to try to control her and keep her from leaving so there are some extenuating circumstances here. Again, not saying it was right for her to do what she did but as someone who has had partners in the past try to manipulate me by threatening suicide I can understand how someone could be pushed far enough for them to lose it and say "ok, just do it then", trying to call their bluff. I know she went further than just calling his bluff but I'm just trying to see both sides here.
