In 2017, men worked 56% of all hours and earned 56% of all income. Women worked 44% of all hours and earned 44% of all income.

If feminists actually believed in the theory behind toxic masculinity, they would support the men's rights movement. MRAs are giving men a voice and a safe space to express themselves.

I feel like there is an unwritten rule in society that men are expected to listen to their wives / girlfriends and be obedient to them. Nobody wants to talk about this though and some people even think it's misogynistic to bring it up.

Men do not seem like they are proud to be men. And this is detrimental to their mental health. We need to celebrate men instead of demonizing them.

The idea that women are "bigger victims" than men is a harmful, antiquated gender norm that promotes toxic ideas in society

Social media is an important part of modern society. It's not something people engage in just to waste time. And it's pretty obvious that women have more social media influence than men.

Well this Japanese biker became fed up with being ignored and started editing in a woman's face on top of his to get more attention.

"No-one will read what a normal middle-aged man, taking care of his motorcycle and taking pictures outside, posts on his account," he said.

Zonggu said he had been surprised by the results of editing apps such as FaceApp.

"First I just tried, then it happened to turn out to be fairly pretty. I get as many as 1,000 'likes' now, though it was usually below 10 before," he said, adding: "I got carried away gradually as I tried to make it cuter."

This story might not seem that important, but I think there's a real pattern here that does have important ramifications on modern society.

For example, how much attention does a man receive venting or talking about his problems on social media compared to a woman? And how likely is he to be the target of social media aid campaigns compared to a woman?

Social media dominates culture and society, so it's important to ask how big of a voice men really have. Far from being male dominated, social media seems to be systematically and institutionally dominated by women. And men might be getting left out as a result.

I have a throwaway where I pass as a woman facing my actual problems: depression, loneliness, disenchantment with the world. Oh boy the attention I've gotten and the lovely PM's. No more gaslighting, victim-blaming, only care and good vibes, and some actual men trying to know more about me. Nothing "creepy" for now, having people to talk to feels good and I feel valued as a person.

Living life in perpetual Disney surely feels different. I don't even have to show any photo. Being a lonely man in today's alienated internet reality feels like a death sentence sometimes...

So sad this is where we are

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I did the exact same thing a few years ago. I was fed up with people not caring about my struggles, so I created an account with a name implying I was a woman. Suddenly, people seemed to care. The difference was night and day.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean, you can also receive care as a man, but usually only from other men or your family. You'll probably be gaslighted and told you're a loser and need to man up in different ways by the rest of society. You are expected to do things on your own and not to complain much.

Women have the chance to complain and can resort to using their victimhood to get attention, financial support, and enter social circles. This is a radically different experience of "people value my presence" and usually begets narcissistic behaviour. As a man, it's what you do which defines you. As a woman, you just are.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup, once I opened myself up to male spaces I found that I didn't need to lie to get empathy. At the time, though, I believed the lie that every men's group in existence was misogynistic and regressive, so I was limited to general social media.

If they wanna talk about micro-aggressions, then we should also talk about micro-privilege.

There's a reason we don't, of course: because women get far, far more micro-privileges than man, and so the conversation is around the micro-aggressions (that women predominantly suffer), and macro-privilege (that men predominantly have) - according the the dominant discourse that's dictated by feminism.

Fine, you wanna talk about how you felt that guy on the bus was looking down your top that you chose to wear? OK, let's talk about how you got better service in that store from the male shop assistants because of that same top. You wanna talk about how guys kept hitting on you at the bar? Well, how about we talk about how you "let" him buy you $20 cocktail? You wanna complain about how you're not taken seriously at work compared to your male colleagues? Then let's also talk about how you get away with doing less work.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Also, the abundance of options in the dating market, less expectations overall, ability to complain and victimize themselves, etc.

This to me is so obvious, yet you can't talk about it seriously, because you'll be deemed a misogynist. Also women clearly are aware of this, yet they act like this privilege doesn't exist at all.

Fyi there's a new mental health sub for men called r/malementalhealth. I think u/a-man-from-earth was advertising for it not too long ago.

I know what you're talking about though. It can be tough sometimes. If you want to talk about anything feel free to. The weekly chats would be a good place (you know the one that isn't stickied anymore because we got busy with other stuff lol). Or right here if you want.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Already on it, thanks. It needs more support from Reddit communities.

I am a non-binary person who wears pink because it’s my favorite color, and have long luscious hair. I am very frequently clocked as a woman, online and IRL, and I get considerably better and more positive attention overall from people.

Of course, that doesn’t apply when I don’t put effort into looking androgynous and I just look like a relatively ordinary man. That’s when I just... blend in more. Am more forgettable.

I believe you 100%.

In real life you also gain government help, better hiring experience, better dating experience... It's not like it's only limited to online.

It's not so extreme as that but women in the west have more social support overall. Men are deemed disposable, creepy, useless.

I don't believe that women have things easy. Especially once you factor in biology. By which I mean having periods and stuff.

One thing I've noticed though is that men are perpetually closer to losing everything and being on the streets. Not having a job is almost a death sentence for a man. It's not just about having spending money or having fun.

Single women might find themselves in that boat depending on what kind of friends and family they have. But once you have children you'll always have first dibs on housing, welfare, child support, and all that.

We have more men at the top because of the consequences of what happens at the bottom. For every CEO there's a homeless man and a suicide victim. And most of those CEOs were probably one step from one of those options at some point in their life. They got lucky and made it where other men didn't. And they probably sacrificed 10 years of their life and countless hours of free time for themselves to get there. As much as I hate CEOs, it is true that they work crazy hours and have a ton of stress in their lives (they're almost a part of the oppression side of society compared to the wealthy shareholders, many of those people being women, who use the CEO's talents for their own bottom lines).

Now I'm not a woman so I can't speak about everything. I've just noticed in the past when dating, the idea that she would ever not have a place to live or food to eat never seemed to be a visceral reality when things got tough. If I didn't take care of her, she would go back to her family. Or to a friend's house. Or she would fake her paychecks to get food stamps. I know one woman who, at one point, found a man and went to Texas to live for a couple of years. And that was just to get out of her parents house, not to get off the streets.

My backup plan is literally what state and city I'd head to in order to avoid freezing to death. The trains here go south where it's warmer. So I figure that's what my options would be.

As a woman have you ever played out the logistics of having nothing, and nobody to help you? Has being really and truly alone ever been a possiblity for you? Do your backup plans involve other people, or do they involve outdoor survival strategies?

I'm not trying to challenge everything you said. This is an important conservation, especially for this community. We shouldn't overshoot "men have things hard" any more than feminists overshoot "men have things easy". But I don't think it's a binary. There are places men have things easy (easier) and vice versa.

[–]AloysiusC 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For every CEO there's a homeless man and a suicide victim.

There's probably a lot more of one than the other.

[–]Yithar 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is kind of a redundant talking point. Jeff Bezos being in the top 1% doesn't help the other 99% of men in any way.

And I'd argue there's immense pressure to succeed because men are deemed disposable, creepy and useless. Now I'm lucky because my father and brother are still alive so I can depend on them if I need help. But if they die, I'm out of luck. I'm literally on my own. That's why I'm doing my best to save money.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

Apex fallacy. Doesn't prove anything. At the same time most factory workers, most homeless, most suicides, etc. are men. So in practice women are protected due to their reproductive value, and they can influence society very much, and make those top CEOs work for their feminist goals.

I m with you. However the other dude has a point. Feminism and women in general just look at the top 1% of men who are high achievers, very successful and hold the most power. However that isn’t the reality for most men.

No one in this sub benefits from Jeff bezos or musk being men. So this Talking Point is very redundant. The truth is male are more on top while simultaneously being more on the bottom of societies.

Ask yourself would you really wanna change a maybe success as a ceo if that could also increase the risk of homelessness, higher suicide rate, lower life expectation, lower education success, etc.

This is the male experience. Both sides are true. However only one is spoken about

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

But you also said things weren't so extreme, so I thought we were talking in a generalized sense. In general, men have much less value than women in society.

You are contradicting yourself.

Women are also called crazy, ugly, sluts, blamed as victims, gaslit, talked down to, ignored...all of it.

No one's denying that. What we're talking about it is that those things are only a problem when it happens to women.

EDIT: I fucked up, using "men" when I meant to say "women".

Being an average white Man is Hard Mode, being a POC Man is Super Hard Mode and being a TransMan is Ultra Hard Mode.. Imagine successfully Transitioning only to find out that your fellow progressives consider Masculinity Toxic.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many progressives will consider female to male transitioning as "treason" or irrational.

[–]DanteLivra 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This just shows how some women can fall down the rabbit hole of attention seeking, it's addictive.

Balance is everything.
