Men are taught to sacrifice everything for females from such a young age. We need to stop promoting heroism to young boy's, instead teaching them the value of self-worth.

I don't see how he doesn't have self worth, he saved a young girl (his sister) from certain death at the expense of some life long scars. It doesn't take a philosophical genius to see that is the least objectionable outcome. I wonder if he hadn't acted and she had died living with that also would've negatively affected his pyshce. I would say an older sibling, regardless of gender, has an inclination to protect a younger siblings it's not an inherently male trait. Same with Mothers, inside a family I don't think there is a bias where men are expected to be sacrificed. If this was a random passerby your argument might have more merit.

I'm torn on this. Yeah, I hate the idea that men and boys should always be expected to be self sacrificial. But sometimes, regardless of sex, you have to do what the other person can't.

When I was like 16 I saved my young nephew from falling into a deep hole by falling in myself. I came out of it with a just broken arm and some stitches, but who knows what that fall would have done to him. I'm glad if one of us had to fall it was me.

Like the article says, for his sister, it was certain death. For him, it ended up being a lot of pain, but at least he still has a sister.

Ok here’s the deal. Heroism isn’t a gender issue. But it is a good trait to have. There is a difference between a selfless act and having no self worth.

How many times have women sacrificed themselves to save their children? How many times have men sacrificed themselves for others.

This boy had such love for his sister that, rather than watch her die cruelly, he chose to suffer to save her. What sort of guilt would one live with if they just watched their sister die? He’d probably be a suicide statistic in a dozen years.

I have self worth, but I’d have done the same thing. Shit, I have done the same thing, but as an adult, I was able to separate the animal and put it down with no injury to myself.

This is where "mens rights" gets confusing.

Do we want to preserve traditional masculinity ? Or do we want to break down the walls of what masculinity means and transcend the man's culture to fit an era of technological and social renaissance?

For me, its the latter.

What this boy did is impressive no doubt, but i have some questions. Why were there no parents or no adults around? Seriously a child could have been killed and if the boy would be killed the girl would be too. So what exactly does an act like this resolve? Its highly risky. The odds are this boy much more likely would have been killed then not and then for sure the girl. So instead of engaging in this risk where the odds are grim, why would the kid not preserve himself and get help from a responsible adult who should have been there in the first place?

I hope someone can shed some light on this. Because im getting confused what mens rights is truly about.

But I don't like the last line, "I'm the older brother so if anyone should die, it should be me." Someone should tell him that his life has the same value as his little sister's.

Bro, no. I have 5 younger siblings. 3 brothers and 2 sisters. I would sacrifice myself to save them from being mauled to death in a heartbeat. Not because I'm a man, because I love them and would do anything to protect them.

I understand my self worth and have great self esteem. I'm not sure if you have younger siblings, but I have a protective instinct for them because I'm the eldest. Not because I'm the eldest male. Perhaps a small part of that is due to gynocentrism, but I wouldn't hesitate to help one of my brothers rather than a sister.

I think maybe you're misconstruing this situation. I see this as a protective older child trying to help the younger child. Not a boy thinking the girl is more important. I may be wrong but I can tell you as the oldest, the urge to protect your younger siblings is strong.

We live in a gynocentric society where men are expected to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of women. Since men can't carry a child or breastfeed an infant, we're expected to protect the one's that do. For thousands of years it's been this way. I'm not saying heroic behavior is a bad thing. I'm saying it's a root cause of issues concerning equal rights. Men go off to war. Men go see what's going bump in the night. Men work jobs that are dangerous just to provide for a family. It's all based on that hero mentality that we were taught as young boys.

That boy could have easily been mauled to death by that dog. I doubt any 10 year old girl would have done what he did.
