You’re sharing 1.5 bathrooms with three men, cleaning the bathrooms once a week is NOT too much lol!

I aim for cleaning the bathrooms once a week, dusting once a week, vacuuming once a week, and mopping every other week and I live alone!

I would make a list of everything that needs to be done and the frequency you’d like to do it in, and then make a schedule. I have an app for this. Here’s just an idea of mine:

Mon: Clean bathrooms, wash towels

Tues: Clean nursery, bedroom, living room, & laundry (our clothes)

Weds: Clean kitchen, dining room, wash sheets

Thurs: Vacuum & mop, wash baby’s clothes

Friday: Laundry (our clothes)

Saturday: Grocery shop

Yours will probably look different – I’m a SAHM with no roommates so I’m not splitting up the chores with anyone else. There’s also stuff I do on an as needed basis throughout the week: the counters in the kitchen/bathroom, dusting the living room, vacuuming again if the floors are looking nasty. But using an app to schedule things really helped me create and stick to a routine.

I lived with a roommate for the first time recently— granted in a college dorm and not a full-size house— and I was almost solely responsible for cleaning. I found it helpful to set aside time each Sunday for housekeeping so it’s done regularly and the dorm was spruced up for the school week. While my clothes and linens were in the laundry I swept the floors, wiped the counters and tabletops, and took out the trash and recycling. This routine also ensured that I had fresh sheets and towels each week, including communal towels like hand-drying ones in the kitchen and bathroom. With a space that size and that many roommates it sounds like you have more on your plate than I did, but hopefully this is useful!

During lockdown (about two months), when we were all under full lockdown, I finally got cleaning down pat. I had a large 2-bed, 2-bathroom apartment - and I lived alone. It’s probably the tidiest my house has ever been because I made sure I followed through every day.

Additional context: I’m from South Africa and it’s probably a bit of a culture shock to say this, but maids are very common. So, during lockdown, I pretty much kept my own place in order just by myself, for the first time.

Basically, from someone who lived at home and worked long hours and had a maid and did nothing, I learned how to do everything myself in a couple of months.

I did it like this: - Splitting bigger chores up over days (eg laundry and linen changes, ironing and putting away ironed items, vacuuming / sweeping and mopping, bathrooms) - Dusting / polishing surfaces in one room on each day (along with the big chores) - Never letting dirty dishes pile up in the kitchen sink (or loading the dishwasher if you have one) - Packing groceries away immediately and having proper places for everything - Making sure the trash is taken out as soon as it’s full.

PS now I live with my husband and our maid comes in once a week. I still tidy up a few times a week and things still aren’t as tidy as I would like it. AND I don’t think I’m that tidy. I’m also still ready bad at ironing.

Edit: to add, and I know it’s long, but decluttering was a huge help and I’m not naturally a hoarder. Part of the reason my place isn’t presently as tidy as I like is because my husband is a bit more hoardy and unperturbed by clutter than I am. I can be quite ruthless.

I think going through and declittering is a good idea. I have a lot of things from my college days and time out of state that I no longer need.

Developing a habit of washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen (table, stove top, counters, sink) right after every meal will save you a lot of time and stress.

Are you doing it all yourself or do you split chores?

If it's just you, then once a week is definitely not too much for a bathroom! With four young adults, a good routine would be something like quick 10-minute clean twice a week (wiping down sink/toilet bowl/taps, dusting, tidy) and then a big clean once a week (scrubbing bath, sweeping/mopping floor, cleaning mirrors, cleaning toilet).

Similarly for the kitchen, when washing up after dinner each day you should give counters a quick wipe down and floors a sweep, then once a week give it a proper clean.
