Related but not: My daughter grew up playing soccer (she's 19 now) but when she was around 12-13, we had an indoor game in the winter. It was snowing this day, but nothing too major that we couldn't make it to the indoor field. Well the team we were scheduled to play, didn't want to risk driving in the snow so they forfeited.

While we got this news of the other team canceling, we were just scrimmaging ourselves when a boys team, probably around 9-10 asked if they could scrimmage us for fun. Our coach agreed and at the time, we were undefeated for our season. These 9-10 yr old boys wiped the floor of our girls, I think the final score was like 14-2. And the only reason we scored 2 was because one of the siblings to our player was a highschool girl that was really good, she scored twice, once from half field. (Indoor fields are smaller) These boys weren't that great, had an average record for their age group, was just faster/stronger and more agile than our girls. They got truly humbled that day.

If you watch the highlight video in the article, the mismatch is very clear. Two hat tricks in the first 18 minutes from Wrexham. Even as the men jog around the women have to sprint to keep up, the pace of play is too hard to adapt to and every possession results in a shot on net within 10 seconds. The women’s back line cannot hope to compete with the size and strength of the male players. Also the title is not entirely accurate, the game ended 11-0 and many goals were scored from players aged 19-27. In an actual league game with no bars held, this would easily escalate to nearly 50 odd goals to nothing. Overall the point of this was just a friendly game, but it’s fun to speculate.

Wrexham is a professional football club in EFL league 2, not "a bunch of older British dudes". some former players, played against some current players, and lost. the women likely weren't drilling anymore, weren't practicing, weren't staying in shape to the same extent. the men still will be because... they currently play the game at a high level for their job.

whenever there is a talk about men's and women's sports, it reminds me of a personal anecdote. A girl I was dating used to run track for her university. I was just a really lazy guy who didn't exercise much, and almost never ran. She would often tease me about being lazy and fat(I was slightly overweight then, maybe 5KG). She was really really active and jogged 3 times a week. We were going to my room to do the deed, turns out the elevator was shut down for maintenance, I lived on the 7th floor. She asks me if I would be willing to race her to the top. I said why not. One two three, we start hopping up the stairs and by the 4th floor I am a whole set of stairs ahead of her, I turn back and look at her and her face is in disbelief. She was very very surprised, I was afraid I would not get any. I slowed down and let her catch up. She pulled my shirt back and ran to the top i followed her slowly. That day it dawned on my how physically different men and women are. There was no way she would beat me, even though she ran track for her university and I was just a lazy fat kid.

I played soccer for my highschool. One time the girls field hockey team challenged us to play field hockey against them - boys soccer team vs. girls field hockey team. Many of us had never even held a field hockey stick before. They had to explain the rules to us. It was a massacre. I forget the actual score, but it was similar to how it went in OP’s post. I’m not even sure we played 20 minutes before it became kinda too awkward to keep going and the game fizzled out.

Honestly, I had a friend who is a menace at soccer. She is by no means the top in the class but she could rank in the top 15ish in the whole class of 50+ people. She was also the best female player in the school. She was built like a boy tbh and has been playing with us since grade 8. I think she got used to the fast pace because she was just a rare beast. the other girls in our class would sometimes run away from the ball or kick the ball as if they were forced to kick a person's head.

It just depends I guess, if girls were trained to play with boys from a very young age and grew up learning skills and adjusting to their play, they could probably compete with them.

Mind you - I suspect that whoever organized the women's side just got talked into it without doing any actual review of the basketball tournament and hwo the thing was likely to work. Had they done so they would have put some time into making up a team.

The women's side is actually older than the "older British dudes". The older British dudes are the coaches and several players from Ryan Reynolds' team which just won the D4 league and is moving up to D3. It was a fun thing for them I am sure, and raised a little interest in the US for the team.

The winning team was made up of professional Arena Soccer players, who defeated a team largely consisting of Canadian professional futsol players.

Womans soccer is the best female team sport. They have just as much vision, imagination, and skill on the ball. However, in womans games there is more opportunity to maneuver. the defense doesnt close as quickly. When the women face men they simply dont have any time. Its a different sport and doesnt mix.

The Wrexham team had a young guy who was blazing fast and skilled and scored a bunch of goals. He would have given most amatuer men's league defenders fits. Then they had an 40 something guy that was a pure striker, he could turn and shoot on a dime and there was no way they could stop him. Simply they were overmatched.
