Your house, your rules. If you don't agree with the phones being in your house then collect them from the kid(s) when they enter your car and place them in ex's mailbox. Let the ex know they are in there to be collected and that they aren't needed at your house. This limmites her ability to spy on dad if that's what you suspect is going on. Also let ex know that scheduled phone calls/video chat with your phone is still an open line of communication to show that you are not just trying to control and cut off all lines of communication.

Mine are all grown up now but me and my ex had the arrangement that there would be a scheduled time for a phone call if either kids or absent parent wanted it but outside that no phone calls or txts unless it was an emergency and that had to go through the other parent. This is a solid rule so that one parent doesn’t interfere or interrupt the others time with their children. If your ex is constantly pestering the kids during your time then I see no problem in turning that phone off. If she complains then you stand your ground and state your reasons. Your daughter is safe and happy under your care so her mother has no reason to be concerned. To be safe make sure you document everything she says and requests including her reasons in case she starts some bullshit.

Ive to 2 kids. Gonna be 8 and 6 soon. They both have old phones or tablets to watch youtube or netflix on, play simple games. There have been times when either of them have missed Daddy a lot and we set up a short video call to ease their nerves. I think 8 is a bit young to have an active cellphone with text and picture and calling capabilities. The level of responsibility isn't there yet. It would also depend a lot on your ex and the level in information or detail she'd ask your kid to relay... they could end up being a spy for her. .. sharing all the small details about their time with you to your ex. . and if you ask your 8 yr old to do the same when they are with your ex it really puts the kid in bad spot. Personally I think its just asking for trouble.

Mom can call EoD or EoD+1. Scheduled, of course.

My ex got tablets through t-mobile. It is nice because I can text my kids (also have an 8yr old). You can FaceTime as well. That being said, it’s ok to limit tablet time. Ex pushed boundaries and will FaceTime at 9:30 pm.

Daughter is 12 now and has had a cell since before divorce started. Divorce took 2.5 years and was really nasty, to the point where custody was withheld by mom for many months. When we gave my daughter the cell phone, I told her I can track everything she does and will always know her location. Daughter is cool with it and I routinely help her with any tech questions, passwords, etc. During divorce, mom petitioned the court to disable gps tracking, and judge denied the request (NJ). That cell phone was how I was able to keep in touch with my daughter when mom withheld custody. Oddly enough, neither of us restrict parent communication on the cell nor do we abuse it.

My general take is that both parents should know where the child is at all times, and have access to communicate with the child as needed. Hiding location from the other parent is shady, especially during a custody battle.
