I will speak toward the point of unions -

I belong to a union, and well frankly they listen only to the groups that have bigger voices. So if the union has 10k people doing job x, and 1k people doing job y. Who has the bigger voice? and who does the union listen to?

in my case it was not my group. so that union idea sounds good on paper, but if they are representing two groups it never works out.

Unions don't help working people.

As far as "demand safer working conditions", let's take one example, a cab driver. How can we keep him or her from getting robbed or killed? It seems like self-driving cars might be the ultimate answer. Of course, that got rid of the job.

You can demand all the equal hiring practices you want but if women don't apply, they won't get hired.

I agree its an issue worth tackling (not just complaining about) however, it can get very industry and location spescific.

- Demand safer working conditions. More safety equipment and procedures. More oversight.

Yes and no.

I see youtube things from Americains where someone is in a train yard and not even in hi-vis, and they know their being filmed too, thats a culture shock for me. They need more safety everything, yea.

But more isnt always better.

I've had jobs that tried that and our risk assesments almost always became routine paperwork that we stopped thinking about.

Do 3 a day and you basically repeat the list, slips trips and falls, traffic, padestrians, might add on electrical or confined spaces or something but too often we stopped assesing risks and started witing a list.

And if it was too risky, if we got a 1 on our 1-5 scale, we were meant to stop work, so the riskiest thing was always a 2. Even when it should have been a 1.

That said the moment that the company can skimp on safety they will, then they'll blame workers for not being safe enough.

We need enforceable legal requirements for companies to provide everything needed to do a job safely, and protections for people who take a stand and stop work for safety reasons.

Unions are great, far from perfect, but still great.

Not really, they have incentives here to hire women in construction. I 'benefited' (boss got an extra grand from the goverment) but i would have got hired anyways, and with this there is a question of if i got the job because i'm the best for it, or cause im a girl.

I found places were happy to hire women, there just weren't as many applying, but theres more and more every year. (admitedly if they are discriminating against women that should be tackled, but i've heard that a lot and never experienced it. Could be because its a strawman or could be a not in my corner of the world)

TLDR:

Anyways my point is, this is workplace deaths are worth actively tackling(by mra's). But we have to do it right and change needs to come from within the industry.

MRA's with office jobs arent going to have the knowledge or experience to tackle this one quite right.

Maybe we can share things related to that here, and getting support for legal or industry change here, but its probably more effective inside the industry.

Maybe we can do a bit more 'if you see something say something' especially if your in or adjacent to dangerous work.

Honestly, a lot of the criticisms of the wage gap apply to the work fatalities stats too. Men choose the more dangerous jobs on their own. It's a risk they are willing to take for the compensation offered.

OSHA already has plenty of stupid and excessive regulations that make no sense. Half of workplace accidents are based on ppl doing stupid shit and not following safety protocols. Some jobs are dangerous and nothing more can be said.

The first question to ask is are safety standards lax because risk of death almost exclusively impacts men in the work force ? Another question to ask is, as women have moved in to traditionally male-dominated vocations over the last 50 years, how have safety standards evolved?

I don’t have the answers to the questions but I think this is the proper starting point

I will be honest. I have a problem with some peoples opinions on this, here in this sub.

Almost everyone here quotes the numbers about men dying at work. But I rarely see people discuss ways we can actually work to reduce these numbers.

Serious steps we can take to not only reduce overall fatalities, but also even the deaths among genders:

- Demand safer working conditions. More safety equipment and procedures. More oversight.

- Unionize. Help protect men working

- Demand equal hiring practices

If the jobs are safer and easier. Less men would die over all, as well would make it easier for women to work in these jobs and even out the gendered fatalities.

Now this is obvious. But I am sure this is not what people here want. People here don't actually care about men dying. They just want women to be "grateful", whatever that means in their heads.

personally i already do everything you suggested... feel free to check my post and comment history... in my city i support my community in various areas and i call upon others to do the same...

The goal is to give mens rights activists an easy resource to refute claims about mens rights activism not caring about issue x or women and men in general

why do mens rights activists and feminists fight instead of brainstorming about solutions?

I'm glad you think it's a simplistic problem that can be solved so easily that ignores the sociological (and heteronormative) reasons for why men work dangerous jobs to make more money, because it gives them access to females who make less money.

You sound like one of those bitch-males who think every problem under the sun can be socially engineered out of existance (mainly by getting rid of heteronormativity and sexual dimorphism that suits YOUR interests.)

What you're actually struggling against IS masculinity, testosterone and hetronormativity (humanity) itself because you're saying these are bad things that get men killed.

While it's true these things get men killed it's not as simple as just arguing it away, if it were that easy we could have done that long ago.

Men are not bots that you can just change the subroutine and get a different outcome, alot of this stuff is hard-wired, hypergamy, sexual dimorphism, testosterone, these are not things you can easily change.

So dickheads like you have a god-complex where you think you can just spay and neuter everyone and get a different result.

What men want is a fair deal for men.

Not to become women so they can get a fair deal as women.

We're not looking to trannify ourselves and become bitch-men, we're looking for a fair deal for our authentic selves.

So that's the basic disagreement you have with us.

Some of those things we had (unions & equal hiring practices) but have largely lost.

We've gone so far backwards we need to get buy in all over again. The fact is, if it's mainly men getting killed, then no one cares - apart from a few extremists like us. Sadly that's the starting place.
