Why is emasculation played for jokes in the media and how is it affecting society's view of masculinity?

Cases where women are abusing men:

1. American Pie: Reunion - Jim’s dad tries to stop Stiffler’s mom from giving him oral but she doesn’t stop. After his climax he laughs but it’s clear that this was not consensual yet the entire scene is a joke.
2. Rick and Morty - A woman tries to rape Jerry
3. South Park - Snookie rapes Eric, there’s many other scenes in South Park and even a scene where the cops make fun of Kyle for trying to report a female rapist
4. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Charlie gets molested by Dee and Dennis was raped at 14 by an older woman who is a librarian
5. Get Him to the Greek - Aaron makes multiple attempts to stop Destinee from getting naked. She continues to do so and then proceeds to take out a dildo and sexually abuse him.
6. Family Guy - Peter has gotten raped by Evelyn, Louis, Meg, his female boss and probably more women all for jokes
7. Horrible Bosses - Julia makes several sexual advances at Dale although he requests her not to, sexually assaulting him on multiple occasions
8. Anchorman 2 - Ron get’s raped by his boss
9. Men in Black: International - Agent H is sexually coerced by a female alien
10. Peep Show - Mark shares that a woman raped him but he says it’s not technically rape because “she didn’t force anything up my bum, that's why it's not rape” yet he woke up to her having sex with him and he asked her to stop (I refer to this specific example later in the post)
11. 2 Broke Girls - Sophie kisses and sits on top of a guy while he’s asleep and it’s all played as a joke
12. Shameless - Debbie rapes Marty. Frank also get’s raped with a dildo.
13. The Big Bang Theory - Penny pins sheldon and keeps kissing him on the face although he tells her to stop, then Amy joins in
14. Just Friends - Samantha runs at Chris and kisses him then takes off his pants although he tells her to stop
15. Neighbors 2 - Mac tries to get to his car and a bunch of women strip him naked and make him fall, then they surround his car even though he asked them to stop several times
16. Police Academy - A woman gives Lt. Harris oral without consent while he’s giving a speech. At the end of the film the same thing happens to Carey.
17. Wedding Crashers - Gloria shows up in Jeremy's bed at night and rapes him
18. Rio 2 - Gabi starts attacking Nigel even though he doesn’t want her to after she realizes she isn’t poisonous
19. Robin Hood Men in Tights - Latrine touches Sheriff inappropriately after he struggles to catch himself since he fell through the ceiling
20. Louie - Melissa Leo forces Louie to go down on her by threatening that she’ll break his finger
21. The League - Woman sticks a finger in Pete’s bum even after he tells her to stop during sex
22. The Simpsons - Marge rapes Homer
23. John Wick 2 - A woman grabs Johns genitals
24. Futurama - Philip asks the amazonian women to stop having sex and cuddle and but don't
25. SNL - Melissa McCarthy keeps inappropriately touching Kurt Burkman and makes him touch her even though he asks her to stop and even tells her he’s married
26. That 70’s Show - Laurie makes a move on Kelso and he tries to stop her several times yet she continues to ramp up the abuse until she completely rapes him (I refer to this specific example later in the post)
27. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen - Decepticon chick crosses Sam’s boundaries several times sexually assaulting him even though he asks her to stop multiple times
28. That’s my Boy - Donny, a boy in school is raped by his teacher and it’s all played for jokes and he’s not viewed as a victim.
29. Yes Man - Old lady makes sexual advances at Carl although he asks her to stop

Please note there are many many more films/scenes where men being sexually abused by women or emasculation is played for laughs such as Reefer Madness, Poetic Justice, Top Five, The Tuxedo, Almost Famous, Californication, Archer, Police Academy 2, 40 Days and 40 Nights, the Minority Report and more.

What’s the problem with this?

In these specific cases, the abuser is a woman and the emasculation as well as vulnerability of men is viewed as a joke. Furthermore, the men aren't viewed as victims and the man is often portrayed as if he couldn't control his urges or he let his urges get the best of him although it was clearly rape (as you can clearly see in #26 in the series That 70's Show). This perpetuates stigmas like men can’t get raped by women, rape is a gendered issue, all men want is sex and more men are raped by men than they are by women. All of these stigmas are false! To make matters worse you really start to see that Hollywood’s portrayal of male sexual assault as a joke isn’t far off from reality when you look at the CDC’s definition of rape (which doesn’t include made to penetrate rape) which is used by major government agencies such as the FBI. Currently there are still 17 states where made to penetrate rape isn’t included in their definition of rape. Those states include Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas. You see the stigma that a man can’t be raped by a woman is actually embedded into the system making this both a systemic and social issue. The government only considers something rape if you're penetrated and the media follows the exact same narrative as you can see in #10 where Mark in the series Peep Show doesn't admit that a woman raped him because as he claims she didn't put anything in his bum, yet he woke up to her having sex with him and he asked her to stop, but she didn't.

You start to see how much this affects us when major organization like Mount Saini don’t offer support groups or therapy for male victims of sexual assault, but they only offer resources for female victims as if rape is a gendered issue. When you look at the White House’s announcement for sexual assault awareness month they don’t mention made to penetrate stats and worse yet when you look at organizations like RAINN (the National Sexual Assault Hotline in America) they don’t have any mention of made to penetrate rape.

Depicting sexual abuse this way also leads to a spread of misbeliefs about rape such as it’s about attraction when it’s really about power and control.

Cases where men are abusing men:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy- Star Lord goes to jail and an alien threatens to rape him, Grout and Rocket step in to defend Star Lord but Rocket says "this one here is our booty"
2. Deadpool 2- Deadpool says he'll die with cancer and Firefist "will win the icebox award for the softest mouth"
3. Dead Pool - Deadpool says “You’ll learn in the worst of ways that I have some hard spots too. That came out wrong or did it?” Deadpool then kisses the man he’s threatening to further emasculate him.
4. 2 Fast 2 Furious- Roman says "don't drop the soap big homie"
5. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia- Charlie sings a song about getting raped "You pin me down and I try to fight you, you cum inside me" There's another joke about prison rape in the show "As soon as you drop the soap they rip your but that's what happens".
6. Family Guy - Peter got raped so many times in Family Guy, it's insane. He got raped by a ghost "No I'm saying no" There's also scenes where Peter gets raped by Jake and even a bull as a joke. There's also Herbert the Pervert a character who's entire existence in the show is about him raping young boys.
7. Friends- Chandler goes to Joey's tailor and gets his inseam done. The tailor touches Chandler inappropriately and it's all a joke.
8. Louie - Louie is sexually assaulted at the dentist by the doctor
9. Dumb and Dumber - Lloyd is almost sexually assaulted in the bathroom
10. Oscars (82nd Academy Awards - Neil Patrick Harris does a performance "Why does a prisoner drop the soap because no one wants to do it alone"
11. Get Hard - John Mayor sings a song,"Hand's against the prison wall choking on a mouthful of balls". This movie is centered around preparing a white guy (James) for jail. There's a ton of jokes about James getting raped in jail.
12. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny - JB sings a song "He gonna make you his sex slave, you're gonna gargle mayonnaise"
13. Rick and Morty - There's many scenes like the jelly bean scene and another scene where Rick and Morty go to giant prison and a joke about jail rape is made. "You know if somebody drops the soap it's gonna land on our heads and crush our spines, Morty. You know, it'll be really easy to rape us after that."
14. South Park - Butter get's raped by a robot. There's a lot of rape jokes in South Park.
15. The Powerpuff Girls - Mojo Jojo goes to jail "Love is in the air, can't you just smell it."
16. Puss in Boots - "You got any idea what they do to eggs in San Ricardo prison? It ain't over easy."
17. 21 Jump Street - "You know what happens to a man like me in jail, it rhymes with grape".
18. Little Nicky - there's a scene where Hitler gets a pineapple shoved up his ass
19. Wedding Crashers -A guy sexually assaults Jeremey while he's sleeping and it's all a joke
20. This is the End -Jonah hill gets raped by a demon
21. The Cable Guy) - the cable guy flashes his nipple on the prison window in hopes that Steven will get raped
22. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - Harold and Kumar go to prison "Now get on your knees"
23. Wedding Crashers - Tummysticks scene, where a man sneaks into Jeremy's bed while he's sleeping and touches him
24. Billy Madison - I'm still horny scene with principal Max

Please note there are many many more films/scenes where men being sexually abused by men or emasculation is played for laughs such Iron Man 2, Sausage Party, The Cleveland Show, Conan, The Last OG, Horrible Bosses, Real Time with Bill Maher, Simpsons, Paddington, The Amazing World of Gumball, Carrotblanca, The Mask, Neighbors, I now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry and more.

What's the problem with this?

The common theme in these scenes of sexual assault in the media is it’s once again played as a joke, men are mocked for their vulnerability, and emasculation but in these cases the abuser is a man. These depictions of sexual assault leads to a spread of stigmas/misbeliefs around male sexual assault such as, only gay men are raped my men, if a man is raped by a man he becomes gay, men are only raped by men in prison, and that there are more cases where men rape men than there are where women rape men which are all false.

You start to realize the brevity of these depictions when you once again look at government agencies such as the FBI, CDC, and even state legislations don’t accept made to penetrate rape. This isn't something unique to the USA. In UK rape is viewed as a gendered issue by the government seeing that the definition only considers a traumatic experience rape if someone is penetrated.

There are several problems here but the biggest ones are men make up half of the victims of sexual assault yet we aren’t recognized, there are little to no resources for male sexual assault victims, and women are very likely to be abusers yet it isn’t recognized through out society as well as by our own government.

You start to realize how much the media dehumanizes and demonizes men through other portrayals, such as, poor fathers, being hyper sexual, cheaters, and more recently in modern shows I’ve started to see jokes about paternity fraud, and a specific hate towards white men through “white jokes” or "colonizer jokes".

Masculinity

Right now masculinity is actually being demonized in society from schools to the workplace and even government which makes you wonder why is it okay? What role did the media play here? If you do a simple google trends search on toxic masculinity you’ll find that toxic masculinity has become a very popular term. You’ll also find that there's way more interest in the statement masculinity is toxic than the term toxic femininity or the phrases feminism is toxic and femininity is toxic.

How did we end up in a world where masculinity which is a healthy trait synonymous with providing, protecting, brotherhood, fatherhood, and being an agent for positive change that will last beyond your lifetime somehow became paired up with anger issues or poor emotional intelligence? Bad actors have taken bad characteristics that anyone can embody man or woman to coin the term toxic masculinity. I personally have never heard someone say a woman with anger issues and poor emotional intelligence has toxic masculinity. This phrase not only demonizes all men but it alienates serious issues that men are actually facing. When you think of the current state of the public school system where boys are being told what they can and cannot do, they are being taught about what masculinity is and isn’t, you really start to wonder, has masculinity become a joke in society?
