And you don’t need to be young! CDC just upped the age to 45, so your insurance will likely still pay for it.
[–]towerandhorizon 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yep. When they did that here in the States, I was one of the first in line to get the three-shot series for my age group. Given more middle-age people are back in the dating pool, it's probably a good idea.

Wish I had done this before losing my virginity, but better late than never.
(just because I could now have HPV without ever knowing)

Unfortunately one can also get HPV without ever having had sex, or at least in female bodies. Another reason the vaccine is important. (Edit: didn’t mean to scare you, just get tested regularly!)
[–]TheNerdsQuest 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm a dude so I don't think I can get tested for HPV from what I understand.

Also helps prevents transmission of cancer causing HPV strains for your female partners !

You can get vaccine for cancer now?
[–]AssistanceMedical951 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of kinds of cancer. One cause of cervical cancer is HPV. And there is a vaccine for HPV.
[–]Nofapdeity2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Luckily I have that vaccine

HPV is a virus that causes cervical cancer in women. You can get vaccinated for that virus.

This is the skinny for those who don’t know or those who are mistaken: if you are sexually active whatsoever , doesn’t even have to be with “a lot” of people either (although common sense says the more people you sleep with =the more risk for exposure … that is common sense, )then you have been exposed already and if not then you will be exposed to the human papilloma virus at some point . Like some 80% or higher percentile range… but here’s the kicker .. some types of hpv will clear up on their own with time .. SOME. You prolly never knew or know you had/have it. Then there’s the genital warts That another type can cause. Ok then lastly there are like 7 or so types of hpv that do not clear up on their own and don’t cause warts and scarily enough you also may not know you have until you find out you have full blown cancer, and it is those strains of HPV that the vaccine is intended to circumvent. That’s the scoop in a nut shell. So basically it’s literally a freaking gamble every time you have sex not if you gonna get it, but which kind of hpv you gonna get. Facts.
I actually have a friend who just last week they made the decision to call in hospice after his year and a half long fight with stage 3 then 4 hpv carded throat cancer. He had got jumped by some dudes in 2019 and got blindsided three on one it bs really but they messed him up pretty bad . Stole his car even. Except that wasn’t the worst of it..,it was while in the ER for that was when he found out ab the cancer. he was not sick at all nor did he show the first symptom Of the hpv or the cancer yet. Tried everything they could treatment wise but it was too advanced.. Death knows no strangers and is a patient motherfucker. My friend is scared y’all.
NOTE My numbers may be off slightly as I stated above but the relevant information is not based upon opinion and is medically factual and current. These aren’t lottery odds on this either.

Is it safe to take ?
And what's the effectiveness ?
Sorry, i am a bit lazy to read the cited link rn
Would appreciate if you could summarize
[–]norwegiandoggo 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Extremely safe. So much so that many western countries now offer it to everyone when they turn 12 or 13. Effectiveness is around 78% if you get vaccinated at that age.
[–]loofyd 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks mate
Well, I'm double that age hope it works for me
I'll see what I can do ..

How long has it been studied for ? Long term effects sometimes dont show up for 10 years or so? Vacinnes are linked to autoimmune diseases

HPV vaccine is not used in parts of Europe due to possible fertility and other nasty side effects. This occurs in higher frequency among women and has even spawned a government sponsored documentary in Denmark where doctors have seen this occuring.
Vaccines, like all drugs, should be evaluated on a case by case basis. This does not make one "anti vax" just as one isn't anti drug for avoiding certain undertested drugs with too many side effects.
[–]norwegiandoggo 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link
Which parts of Europe is it not used? Nasty side effects can happen but are exceedingly rare. However, when it does happen it makes for great documentary material and can easily scare the public. Journalists love that shit because they get a lot of views and the public is easily frightened. As far as I've read, no-one has died from the vaccine despite millions having received it. But thousands die in Europe every year from cancers caused by HPV. So the benefit to risk ratio is pretty clear cut according to the European Medicine Agency and other authorities on the subject.
[–]maplemario 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Generally, when Europe bans something they are ahead of the US. In the US, too much influence is exerted over policy by lobbies. Really it’s up to your own discretion, personally, when I see a country in Europe bans a drug or vaccine, I’ll avoid it. The problem with vaccine info, which is the counter argument to yours about scare tactics from anecdotal evidence, is that causality data with vaccines is extremely muddy and there isn’t a lot of impetus to actively find long term effects of vaccinations. Put in simpler words, it’s much easier to say someone got cancer from HPV than prove that someone’s heart problem 10 years later was caused by a knock on of mild myocarditis that was triggered by some vaccine they took. It would be like trying to find out what food item in someone’s diet 5 years previously caused the GERD that caused their esophageal cancer. Super low signal to noise ratio.

True. But the EU didn't ban HPV vaccines. Nor did the European Medicine Agency. So I'm not sure what "Europe" you're referring to here. In fact the EU and the European Medicine Agency recommends the HPV vaccine for everyone aged 12-13 it's also recommended (but not free) for those up to 26 years old. And as far as I know, European countries follow this. I'm not aware of any Eopean countries that ban the HPV vaccine. It is approved in all EU member States. The only country in the world that bans the vaccine that I know of is Japan.
You're also thinking about it the wrong way. HPV causes cancer and deaths today. The vaccine hasn't caused any deaths to date that we know of, but we know it protects against HPV and cancer. So there's no evidence that the vaccine causes a heart attack. But there is evidence it prevents cancer. We should always go based on the best real available evidence we have up until now. Not some "maybe it causes some harm we haven't seen" hypothetical evidence..the truth is the vaccine saves lives today and the available evidence says the benefits largely outweigh the risks.
[–]maplemario 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I certainly don’t think I’m thinking about it the wrong way. It’s a different style of thinking to you, but I believe it’s the correct way for me.
I don’t see the need to worry about a crazy low chance I’ll get cancer or die from HPV, if I even get it. I’d rather not willingly risk side effects from something that effectively protects me from a human meteorite strike. This isn’t COVID. This is HPV.

OP why's it seem like you're totally a shill for big pharma.
[–]Shanbaceball 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Alot of things can cause cancer dairy and gluten, meat eaten everyday will cause your body havoc over time. It doesn’t take the body long to be out of wack to produce cancer. There are so many variables when it comes to cancer. Ive had HPV for 16 years and i do not have cancer. But i also eat super clean and take care of my body.
Exactly someone with some common sense and a brain. Hi my name is shannon!! Alot of vaccines are linked to autoimmune disorders and thats a main reason k never took this bullshit when i was 20 when offered it. I smelled a rat.

Yeah, I tried to fix it but for some reason it keeps messing up :-( copy paste and it should work though. Or Google "WHO HPV vaccine" and it should get you the top result.

I tried to get it when I was in the Navy, but they told me I was too old (said I needed to be under 26).

So here is the link to the documentary
Sources matter. Unless anyone here has a PhD and has literally been doing scientific research on the matter, then it's severely limited what one can add to this debate.
Watching documentaries without understanding all the sources involved is not doing research. It's potentially filling your head with garbage.
Watching a single documentary and fully understanding the truth of it would require a lot more homework than you've actually done. You would literally need to follow up on all the research papers involved and understand the scientific nomenclature and overall results.
(reminder: I'm not "anti-" vaccine....
And yet you just had a little flame war defending an anti-vax video.
It doesn't matter if you've taken a vaccine in the past. That doesn't reflect on your views here, which are anti-vax because you're spreading a documentary with poor sources.

The movie "Sacrificial virgins" has several false and misleading claims. Including that HPV doesn't cause cervical cancer. You should look at the scientific consensus stated by the CDC, FDA, EMA, and WHO when evaluating vaccine safety and effectiveness. Not some random and debunked anti-vax documentary by a science denier. Of course all vaccines come with a small risk of side effects. Some mild, some serious. If you watch a documentary just highlighting those, you get an extremely twisted view. They can't show you an emotional, memorable documentary movie about all those happy people who don't have cancer or genital warts. Such a documentary would never do well. And those documentaries therefore don't exist. But a movie visting the few people who had side effects and then arguing that there's some conspiracy. Such a documentary will do well of course. So that's why there are so many anti-vax documentaties. And almost no pro-vax documentaries. The WHO, CDC, and the EMA all conduct periodic reviews and all state that the benefits outweigh the risks after the vaccine has been in use for millions of people for 13+ years.

[–]norwegiandoggo 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
Two sources differing wildly should not be evaluated equally. If you think that one documentary holds equal weight to the FDA, CDC, WHO, and EMA, then of course you will say that you should evaluate both sides. But the problem is that your documentary doesn't hold any weight compared to the entire medical establishment. Your source is esentially useless. It's not a published review or a study. It's a movie.
Let me remind you the difference is that scientists study this for years. It's their entire career. They have studied 8+ years to have Phds. And then take those people with Phds and multiply them by hundreds who evaluate and study these things through years and question each other and their findings. This is not equivalent making an emotional, controversial documentary to get views created by a small team who aren't scientists, but story tellers. So your opinion that people should watch the documentary isn't really a good one. You're essentially telling people to look at a horrible source to make up their minds.
Evaluate your sources critically. This is what they will teach you as soon as you take some kind of higher medical or science degree. Your movie is not a scientifically backed source. It's a useless, extremely poor quality source, which would not be acceptable at any reputable university to make claims about vaccines. You would probably fail even a basic bachelor's degree course if you delivered a paper citing that movie as a source to make any factual claims about vaccine efficacy or safety.
