My friend was about to fuck this super fine girl. He simply asked her, "Are you sure you aren't on your period?" She just said, "No no.! Course not." Loe and behold, my friend comes out to the living room looking like a lion who just murdered a zebra. He had no idea...

Usually this is a two-parter for me. If I'm not going to use a condom, I have to ask:

1) Are you on birth control?

2) Do you get tested regularly?

I tend to phrase that second question that way because I don't particularly want to offend a girl by indicating I think she may not be "clean". Probably doesn't matter, but I've seen girls get all butthurt over less.

Personally I'm relieved when a guy asks me. It shows that he's taking things as seriously as I am. Yes sex is great but the fear that you've contracted or spread something to someone else just isn't worth brushing over to me

Seriously, if this is a girl you've known for two weeks, and the first time you're hooking up with her, you expect her to answer you completely honestly without missing a beat?

If this is a girl you've been banging (with a condom) for a couple months, then her answer would be much more likely to be honest. Shit, if you bring up that you're clean, she might even be like "awesome!" and that'd be that.

The key is that there has to be a history of trust.

Echoing everyone else who's posted - people lie in pursuit of sex every day. This is not new. Use a damn condom.

But if you're still asking anyways (I do, too), I would stay away from using a word like "clean" and instead say "Hey, just so you know, I got tested last week/month/whenever." If she doesn't reciprocally offer any info, follow it up with "Have you been tested recently?" and go from there.

(Also, there have been a few posts on this over in r/sex.. if you search, you might find some good answers that may not pop up here.)

one-night stands can be dangerous, it takes a few scares for you to learn the hard way. I don't really do one-night stands anymore for that very reason, but if I do my rule is no oral from either party and definitlely a condom (i.e. the sex won't be that great, hence why one-night stands kind of suck ass)

Am I the only one who asks regardless of condoms? You can get sick from oral, too. Regardless of likelihood, I would not go down on a girl with HIV.

I always broach the topic just before sex, saying, "Before we go any further, let's talk about health for a second," and volunteer my sexual health record, last test date, and number of sexual partners since the last test. It's usually within the year and less than a few partners, and seems to really set the right stage for trust. It has never resulted in a failed night. If you have a problem disclosing your number of partners since your last test, you should probably get tested more often.

Most shocking to me is the number of people who tell me that's the first time anyone has asked them those questions (almost all of them!). Start asking more, guys.
