If I'm on a Day 2 or more, I test girls by saying, "Hey, let me get the first round." If I'm with a group of people and my drink runs out, I'll usually be courteous and ask if anyone else wants something while I go get another. If they don't reciprocate in any way, it's a big red flag for me. I never would buy a girl a drink as part of a cold approach.

The only switch drinking flips, are girls who can't have sex without a drink to relieve themselves from the social pressure of being labelled a slut for sleeping with guys; some girls need that drink in order to feel it's not "their fault."

It doesn't flick any other switches. But the reason you have it while you two are alone is because a) you like drinking, too and b) because sharing anything (food, drink) fills a very primitive role in bonding two people together. The situation has to be right though; you already have attraction, are past qualification, are in comfort and working out your logistics. (Edit: I guess that is a switch).

I used to think that it's a bad idea to buy drinks for girls 'cause there are tons of chicks just fishing for a drink or too. Some will mad at you for not getting them an appletini and a lot of them will get mad when you order one and finish it yourself.

But now, I buy drinks after we've conversed for a while and I feel she's not the kind to dip out after I do. It's more of a "You're cool, here's a drink on me." Don't be the guy girls mooch of off, that's not cool.

What concerns me here is what i consider a discrepancy in game theory. I was taught was to not buy girls drinks. It's supplicating. Is this incorrect?

I suppose it seems alright in the "I'll get the first round.." case, but otherwise no.

Did you ever buy a girl a drink and she just said "Thanks." and walked off? That's probably the worst that could happen.

Here you let us know that you're planning to buy a woman a drink in order to convince her to hang around and chat with you. In that case, I'd try to test the waters for conversation first. Aim for a lady in your league and start with a simple 'hello.' Shoulders back, head high, nice smile. If conversation starts, then offer a drink.

If she was just being polite, she now has incentive to continue. If she genuinely likes you, you're only improving your chances.

When men buy me drinks I do my best to maintain conversation out of simple courtesy. I'll even let a guy hang around all night provided he has a sense of humor and tact. Overly suggestive/intrusive/inebriated guys get abandoned quickly, drink or no.

Don't buy someone you haven't talked to a drink unless you are weird and old, those are the people who usually do that. A lot of people might decline out of the blue drinks as well, I think a lot of people view the acceptance of a drink as granting the right for someone to hang out with you. If you arrive at the bar with someone, even if it isn't a girl, it can be nice to buy someone a drink. If a girl declines say she can get the next round. If she is resistant to even that, she doesn't want you to buy her a drink. I wouldn't buy more than one person a drink unless there is a specific reason such as going out with your girlfriend and her friends. I guess I might if I was a baller.

If you are talking with someone at the bar that you just met and you buy them a drink it could indicate interest and acceptance of the drink could also potentially show interest. If you are having a good time, buy her a drink. If you are really sneaky you can keep your drink within finishing distance of hers so you can finish at the same time and buy another round.
