Lady here. Honestly, just start by saying hi and ask an opening question. Relate it to something they're doing or wearing that is interest or hobby related. Even a simple compliment is generally accepted.

The key is to START. If a girl likes you, she will make EFFORT to continue the conversation. If she's not interested, she will not. Simple as that.

After a good convo simply say something along the lines of "I had a great time talking to you (insert name), I would love to continue our conversation some other time, maybe over some drinks/coffee." You can shorten this and expand as your confidence grows.

TLDR, 1. Only approach women who show some form of interest in you. This is hard to gauge since there's a lot of ways to show interest in someone, but that's where experience comes into play. 2. Memorize situational openers and follow up questions to get a conversation moving.

I'll be honest, this IS NOT the "Only" approach that you'll ever need. This post should be taken with a (big) grain of salt. The very opening is a contradiction. It's states two commonly used points of advice, says that those aren't the best to start with, then proceeds to give the same forms of advice but with different names above them.

If OP put time and effort into making this, then I'll give him the credit for making a rough 'overview' to give people some idea of how dating works. But this shouldn't be used as your only source of dating advice. We appreciate it OP, thank you for putting this info into one post for us.

But to all Redditors' out here, if you ever feel like you need help with dating or are stuck in the process somewhere, make a post on this sub and see the responses. Then just pick and choose what goes best for whatever it is that you are experiencing. Every situation is different and every person behaves uniquely.

The 'Approach' that best suits YOU, fully depends on YOU and the people YOU are trying to attract.

lots of good advice in here, thanks for putting it together. I personally think I’m capable of all of this but the only part I’m struggling with is having the confidence to make the approach in the first place. I am working on my confidence but it isn’t easy when you’ve thought a certain way for almost all of your life

I think it's also helpful to point out that you can cold approach people quickly in a situation where you know you'll see someone again. If not to get an initiate read on interest, but to also position yourself to warm approach.

Anecdote

I cold approached a girl at my school who I had seen around a bunch. I never found the right time to approach her, solely because she was always doing homework or working on something (so I can argue there are some situations where there is a right time). One day I happened to be walking out of a building the same time as she was. This was the right time.

So I called to her, caught up to her and asked if she was in the same program as me. I asked her what her name was, told her mine, and asked if she was taking any classes. I didn't tell her I wanted to know who she was because I thought she was attractive or anything, and I made short work of the conversation as I had something to do.

Now I know her name and can easily just go up to her when I want, since we know each other a bit. Not only is that easier, it takes pressure off from breaking the ice and having to "play any games."

Hey devbev. Whenever I’ve been out somewhere, I don’t seem to notice the woman’s signs of interest towards me (e.g. playing with hair, standing next to me, etc). Could it be that I am merely not noticing them or that the women are not displaying those signs at all?
