If someone believes that men are not inherently valuable as human beings until they prove themselves as worthy with useless metrics like strength or level of confidence... that is a form of hating men. It's misandry plain and simple.

We all agree neofeminism is toxic for men and is mysadrist, let's agree that there are also men who are toxic to ther men too.

I feel like most (but not all) people on this sub already agree that telling a man to be a "real man" is hatespeech against men.

Let's not use the word toxic, though. There is a term that was originally used to describe this situation but its meaning changed over time and now it means "men are toxic". Instead we should use the phrase "internalized misandry".

This is precisely why the right wing are not allies of MRA or men's rights. Because the political right are more likely to believe in traditional gender stereotypes/roles and the concepts of "alpha" masculinity. More specifically, social conservatives and religious conservatives, want to go back to 1950. They aren't very much interested in talking about problems either gender is experiencing in the modern world. They just believe if we go back in time, everyone will be happy.

That phrase kind of loses a lot of its meaning because it is so overused, often in so many different conflicting ways. Some men will think a "real man" is someone who is forgiving and caring, some men will think a "real man" is someone who is tough and uncaring.

Ultimately though, it rarely ever has any power in of itself. Most men don't really care about what other men think of them, because it doesn't actually affect them unless those men have some kind of position of power or authority over them.

It's only when that kind of judgement is coming from women, which directly affects men in a very intimate, personal, social, sexual and romantic manner, that it hold any kind of real power, and then you will see men struggling to keep up with whatever is considered a "real man" by women's standards and often build an identity around that some woman will see that and consider them valuable. Unless it is tied to a law or results in men assaulting other men, which is also often drive by men pursuing what they believe to be "what do women consider a real man", there is very little impact from one man to another.

Brother, masculinity can be many things. It is an ideal no one can truly reach, but we all take our own paths towards it. Are hunky soldiers the only masculine guys around? No. If you ask me, I'd say a fat scientist who's great with math and science is equally masculine. I'd say a doctor is equally as masculine as the soldier even if he isn't a hunk.

The idea is that there is diversity in who "real men" are, and you are absolutely right that some other brothers perpetuate toxic behaviors and associate it with masculinity. That is not masculinity.

Masculinity, for me personally, at least is providing something of value to society at large and being good at it. The soldier protects, the doctor saves, and the professor teaches; the three will likely have different muscle masses with soldiers at the top, but that doesn't necessarily make him the only "real man". Being non confrontational and eloquent when possible is more masculine AND civilized than talking with fists always. Masculinity also includes a desire for more always, the spirit of conquest etc etc.
