SysAdmin. I push buttons and solve logical puzzles that have finite and specific answers, which is actually kind of refreshing because most things in life are not so structured.

I took 3 years of freshman-sophomore level STEM courses in college with the idea of being a doctor until I realized it would take 14+ years to become fully "educated". Dropped out, started in techsupport, worked my way up. The only ceiling is the one I create.

Professionally, I am a head of technology. I look after a staff of 25 people. We produce hardware, integrated solutions and software. It's a great job, I am pretty well liked by my staff and it's been a long hard slog to get here. I have a degree in electronic engineering and a second degree in computer science which I studied part-time. I also have a lot of industry qualifications covering the full development stack. Database certs, management, software, networking, etc. I have done a lot.

In my private life, I'm a guitarist in a couple of bands. My main band is getting a little higher as time goes by. I doubt I'll ever get to quit the day job given the state of the music business, but we at least have a good following.

I also race cars. I just got my last summer out of my current racer. I'll start shopping for a new one end of this year and rebuild it over winter and spring, ready to take out next summer.

If you wanted to get into engineering, I would insist you need a decent degree in the subject from a good university and a portfolio of decent projects you participated in either commercially or as a hobby. Most of the men I accept for roles have a proven track record of extra curricular activities demonstrating their interest.

If you're a woman and you have that same level of qualification, it's doubtful your interview will last more than five minutes before you'll be a dead cert for a job offer. If you're a woman without these skills and experience, you may have to start lower down but you will be invested in and promoted in leaps and bounds.

If you're a man without this experience, nobody will read past the first page of your CV.

I also have a psychology degree, (and a few other secondary qualifications) a photography degree and I've also been a fashion designer and manufacturer, had a woman's clothing shop and imported "clothes/fashion" for it, I've had a couple of all day car parks,, and have owned several other small business including one that sold secondhand bricks!

And heaps of other stuff "in between" businesses i.e managing a restaurant, worked in a few bars, done bricklayers laboring, a taxi driver, etc etc

That's the basics anyway

I still don't really know what the word 'career' means. I guess I'm not meant to have one, although I love my current work and workmates, who knows, maybe we'll sell the company in a few yrs?! Maybe!

Analyst Relations Associate.

It's a little known field, but it's essentially a more technical and specialized version of Public Relations. Instead of managing relationships with the public, I manage relationships with technology analysts who write about my company and our products and advise technology buyers on which solutions to purchase.

My role also involves a lot of marketing research in support functions. Analyzing our coverage by technology analysts, designing sales material based on the coverage, creating internal newsletters on coverage highlights, etc.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Marketing.
