Not to mention it's infantilizing against women themselves. I'm surprised the feminists don't see the problem here. If women aren't hired fairly, on merit alone, then it will change how they're percieved. Clients and coworkers will see a woman on the job and wonder of she's actually capable of reaching a professional standard or whether she's just a hapless diversity hire brought on board to tick a box. That's gotta suck for the women who are actually skilled and earned their positions.

The fundamental problem is that people won't yield privilege that they don't need. They'll take any advantage they can get.

Affirmative action is absolutely against the concept of equal opportunity, but women don't care because it benefits them. If you switched the roles and men were getting affirmative action to be in healthcare, I guarantee you women would have a problem with it.

Not sex-related, but my daughter's been applying to med schools, and it's a similar situation with what they're looking for re: applicants. Particularly:

are you part of a minority group under represented among physicians?

And

do you live in a medically under serviced area?

Needless to say, she's written a lot of essays about being LGBTQ and living in a poorer, mostly rural area.

I can even see why med schools would want to encourage more students in these groups. That is, minority parients tend to have better medical results treated by minority doctors and doctors from under served areas are more likely to work there later. But it's kind of a kick in the teeth to students who don't meet the particular criteria being promoted.

In america the biggest beneficiary of affirmative action was white women. They also sought to destroy it first. They don't acknowledge this nor any other structural advantage.

It's almost as though men didn't have families, too.

Ya, equal opportunity is enough. The gender ratios won't be even because men and women have different natures and priorities, and that's ok. I tend to think that companies that hire a lot of women just have some horny male executives as the chief reason.

Affirmative action is also racist. Anything that is based on unchangeable attributes is a mistake. Merit only is the best way.

There's a rebound effect taking place right now. Things will take time to rebalance properly.
