Generally recommended because it locks the parties into the divorce process so even if one party dismisses their petition, the other party can still proceed on their counterpetition rather than having to refile a new case.

Don’t know how common it is as a general matter but it happened in my case. I wouldn’t read too much into it other than the lawyers setting forth reciprocal, maximalist positions. It’s just a way to ensure they’re not waiving rights but doesn’t necessarily mean it will be contested.
