This is actually probably too pessimistic of you. Friendzone is where a girl STOPS a guy, like, direct rejection, and says "we should just be friends" or some equivalent.

"i thought we were friends" was probably, as other commenters noted, a chance to say "We were, now I have something else in mind" or maybe even "Oh yeah, best friends. Super close" (as you pull her in or at least make a gesture).

Show intent. Don't back down easily. If she pushes back harder on it "No we're friends and nothing more" type shit then back off entirely and treat her like you hardly know her. In groups act like she's just another face in a crowd. Give her no further attention. Maybe she'll bite then, but if you keep trying after a push-back then you come off weak and desperate. Freezing up isn't as bad as simping, so it's probably salvageable tbh.

And yeah, you can play at the idea of Being Friends if you toy with it just right. I've told girls I'm sleeping with that we're gonna cuddle platonically, lol. Because with the right tone and vibe, she's gonna KNOW you're lying and that framing of the situation excites her.

Woman turn friends into romantic relationships. Stay friends, if ur looking for an LTR. Put her on a back burner tho. Just don’t make it known.

I disagree with others saying you went too strong. She was definitely testing you.

I know that goes against what everybody advises, but don't listen to what she says but pay attention to how she acts. Women do play games like that sometimes, and you may have to ignore the words.

In my opinion, she was waiting to see if you have the guts to say that you intent not to be just friends. It is definitely not a rejection.
