From December 1941, for the first time in British history, the UK government introduced compulsory service for women as part of the broader national mobilization during the Second World War. Initially, the requirement applied to unmarried women aged 20 to 30, but as the war progressed, the government expanded the age range to include women up to the age of 43, and also included married women without young children. By 1943, around 90% of single women and 80% of married women in the eligible age groups were engaged in either war work or national service.

Modern militaries in countries like Israel, Norway, and increasingly Sweden implement gender-neutral conscription.

However, Ukrainian women are completely untouched by forced mobilization, and they are free to leave the country (millions of them left). Why? This seems to be such a ridiculous policy that hurts both the war effort and the Ukrainian demographics.

The current Ukrainian policy effectively treats military service and national sacrifice as male-only obligations, which is a clear form of egregious gender-based discrimination. Yet, there is complete silence in the media.
