From a brief glance I have some issues with this study..

Opposition to domestic violence prevention initiatives: Being opposed to initiatives helping prevent violence towards women in relationships

This implies that domestic violence only happens in one direction, e.g. Men being violent towards women in relationships..

The problem here then is, if a man in the study disagrees with domestic violence prevention initiatives based on this he would likely be chalked up as "exhibiting toxic masculinity"

When coining the phrase “toxic masculinity,” Shepherd Bliss emphasized a “part of the male psyche that is abusive” (D. Gross, 1990, p. 14; see also Harrington, 2021). In the post-#MeToo era, however, the term has expanded to capture a wide range of troubling attitudes and stereotypical behaviors in men, including the crude misogyny of Donald Trump (Sexton, 2020), serious threats to women from rape culture (PettyJohn et al., 2019) and challenges to women’s reproductive rights (Casey, 2020). Toxic masculinity has also been used to describe more benign (but nonetheless system-sustaining) behavior such as “mansplaining” (Morris, 2019), neglecting household chores (Morin, 2022), and failing to be enough of a feminist ally (Lee, 2023).

"Part of the male psyche that is abusive" -- framed as an inherent part of being male, rather than tendencies we associate with maleness (which could appear in many places)

"rape culture" -- what the fuck are we talking about? FBI crime statistics show the prevalence at a tiny fraction of, say, simple assault (roughly 800% ratio in 2024), but no one says we have an "assault culture". Also, US states have laws extending enhanced punishments for female rape victims and not male. And jurisdictions like the US and UK don't track rape against male victims comparably (tweak the definition of rape, exclude certain victims from rape statistics). I guess we do have a rape culture: we pretend it's something that it's not for the purpose of manipulating the public. That is kind of a special, cultural thing.

"Mansplaining" -- inherently bigoted term. If a person is talking down to someone else due to some perceived difficult or impossible to change characteristic, just call them what they are: a bigot. But 1) you can't read minds, so you don't actually know if someone's being a bigot or has a different, "acceptable" reason for their treatment of others, 2) why female victims get special treatment is unclear (we don't have terms for talking down to immigrants or poor people and so on), 3) why male aggressors get singled out is unclear (why not aggressors who are white or rich or atheist, etc? I'm sure we can do some intersectionality algebra to find out who the worst offenders are if we really wanted to...). My bad; I forgot that actual bigotry isn't supposed to make sense, even when it's endorsed by "scientific" research.

"Neglecting household chores" -- but of course not when one partner "neglects to stick to a budget" or "neglects to go back to work" when agreed upon or "neglects to provide adequate child care with the available child support and alimony", etc. Biggest causes for divorce usually include finances, so these alternatives would be more valid complaints of partners not contributing to the household. But alas, none of this is about helping people overcome real problems

"Failing to be enough of a feminist ally" -- worldwide written policies agree it's wrong to perform medically unnecessary surgeries on girls but not on boys, and yet no one's labeling anyone (eg, "toxic feminine") for failing to be"enough of a men's rights ally"; fuck off. This is assuming we have a clear definition of feminism, let alone one that isn't bigoted.

So this paper is implicitly endorsing these ridiculous ideas by acting as if they are a valid part of explaining human behavior (eg, "toxic masculinity") and the state of the research (what the term "toxic masculinity" is supposed to mean)

This is a reasonable call out:

For example, a Google Scholar search of articles on the topic published since 2020 returns more than 10,000 results. Yet, many of these articles do not attempt to define toxic masculinity but instead use the term to “signal disapproval” (Harrington, 2021, p. 346). Accordingly, both feminists (De Boise, 2019) and conservatives (Salter, 2019) alike have criticized toxic masculinity as an incoherent or nonexistent concept

theorizing around toxic masculinity shifts blame onto an ambiguous social construct rather than critiquing men’s actions (Waling, 2019b)

The overreliance on an undefined, but universally condemned, concept of toxic masculinity is of particular concern

Only the two smallest groups showed high levels of toxic masculinity. These included the “Benevolent Toxic” group (7.6 percent) that showed high values on benevolent sexism and sexual prejudice and moderate-to-high values on the other markers of toxic masculinity.

The smallest group was the “Hostile Toxic” group (3.2 percent) that showed the highest values on hostile sexism, opposition to domestic violence prevention, disagreeableness, narcissism, and social dominance orientation.

Words are weapons. Language itself is the battlefield upon which the "battle of the sexes" is being fought nowadays. So studies like this one are ultimately meaningless; the end result of weaponized language is that the two sides are no longer listening to each other any more.

Accusations of "toxic masculinity" will continue to be applied to everything a man does or can do, and those same constant allegations will just get ignored. Rinse and repeat.

I've been seeing feminists react to this and the results are interesting. For some it's a "white pill" that makes them more hopeful, but some are weirdly mad. Like they WANT men to be terrible. Like for some reason they have this sick desire for men to be the most malicious people imaginable so that they can justify the way they feel about them. It's so backwards. Shouldn't this be a relief? Shouldn't this make you feel more optimistic?

Was it really needed? I mean, those 10% who show toxic masculinity are probably members of ICE and maga - you know, the idiots who have wet-dreams about being the Punisher, without really knowing what he stands for. They are conflicted as they need to lick orange-idiot's ass every day, put a mask over their faces to be identified as criminals they are and still carry their AR and guns, so...yeah I guess they have toxic personality.

Also, I would like the same study performed on ladies! I wonder what the percentage of toxic-femininity would be...
