I've been faced with many realities about my nature from RP and it's given me the opportunity to self reflect. However, one area that I feel is incongruous is the sincere feelings of friendship I feel toward non romantic male friends.
Throughout my personal RP journey, I've found that the most difficult concept to embrace is giving up male friends. I mean this both as a single woman avoiding "leading them on", and when I eventually get into a relationship so as to avoid temptation and tension.
Like many of you, I prefer the company of men for a multitude of reasons. I would like to talk about only one of those reasons here that I'm surprised doesn't get brought up more often.
Maternal instincts. For both younger and older male friends, I enjoy supporting them, loving them, and providing for them. For especially those who lack a positive feminine force in their lives, I really and truly want to be there to help them. I get a huge sense of satisfaction from feeding and sheltering my friends, supporting them, and offering advice in areas that I'm familiar with (female and male friends alike).
Meanwhile, I recognize that this relationship is not the type that I am seeking in a partner, particularly because my feelings of respect and admiration aren't as strong as they should be if I plan to be a supportive wife for decades to come.
This is a force BEYOND the friendzone and possibly even more difficult for these men to escape. Dare I call it the "MOMzone"? Can a guy get "momzoned"? A bit creepy and crazy, right?
My hamster tells me this is a mutually beneficial relationship, but my rational self tells me these guys want something I don't, and my friendship isn't helping them in the long run.
The "momzone" forms most often following a period where I have had to provide for them in some way (IRL examples include providing a place to stay, getting them a job, or being in a position of leadership or mentorship). This is real friendship bond stuff I'm talking about. I have at least 3 male friends for whom I'd drop everything and fly across the world to rescue from prison.
Some major issues with these friendships:
-
A male partner wouldn't like it;
-
Once a woman has children, her maternal instincts are satisfied and those other male relationships may no longer be important;
-
These poor souls interpret this affection as attraction and waste their time as "beta orbiters".
These strong maternal instincts are part of what makes us good mother material, but this experience demonstrates the challenges that can arise if those instincts go unmet in a traditional manner.
Before RP, I may have mistaken my love for these friends as attraction. But I recognize now that those relationships would not be sustainable because of the backwards power dynamic.
It's taken me a while to articulate this properly for text. I'd be curious to hear what everyone thinks (outrage or otherwise). I'm interested in general discussion and not so much personal advice (although that's welcome, too).
Some leading questions:
Women: Do any of you have male friends in your life that you feel strongly toward in this sort of way? Have you observed it elsewhere?
Men: Do you have any non-romantic female friends that you feel truly care about you?
TL;DR/Hypothesis: women are capable of real love for their non-romantic male friends thanks to strong maternal instincts.
