Can anybody give examples of film or TV characters who show what the stoic oak looks like for me? I don't have any male role models irl who match up with those kind of characteristics.

You should probably model yourself from Waldo from "Where's Waldo."

Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, Sean Connery.

You shouldn't be chasing imaginary heroes in movies and TV since they are almost always unrealistic and would seem silly in real life. With that said, True detective has a lead that is very masculine and dark triad.A good REALISTIC movie of masculine men in dangerous situations is 9th company.Forget all the 300's Leonidases and similar- they're a child's wet dream.

For literature you should check out Gates of fire and Tides of war, in that order

Thanks, obviously most characters on screen are unrealistic so would be good to know what to be aiming towards instead of holding up a fiction or something wrong as an ideal.

I'm going to go back to Bridges of Madison County. I will advocate it being required sidebar viewing.

Watch it with your wife and cry twice. First time when you realise what a chump you've been and second time you cry because you know why your wife is crying.

I am all choked up now.

never saw it. Is there a TL:DW?

Clint Eastwood is AF, Meryl Streep is a post wall SAHM married to a Beta provider.

Meryl falls for Clint, they 'fall in love' aka fuck like rabbits. In the end Meryl makes the ultimate 'sacrifice' to stay with her husband and kids and not skip town with Clint. Duty over true everlasting love.

You will cry when you recognise yourself as BB in the movie, then you will cry when you realise your wife has a Clint Eastwood lurking in her past.

I get it. won't cry is either. Because I did the "crying" two years ago.

Sounds like the English Patient? Will definitely watch, thanks.

Chances are, in the movies , you will find more characters that show you how not to do it. Actual positive role models will be a little bit scarcer. And the problem with movies are, the beta chump gets the hot girl in the end. Not happening irl.

I can't remember much about the English patient. Something something dead chick in a biplane in the desert something something. I vaguely remember a love triangle, but that is all.

And talking of love triangles, looking back, 9 out of 10 times it is a chick trying to choose between AF and BB.

Watch the series Madmen. Don Draper or any of the guys

Don Draper or any of the guys

not ANY of the guys. Plenty of weak men there. shown to be weak.

[–]JDRoedellRed Beret0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Yep. Hopefully the difference is obvious though.

in that show, its blatant. thats why girls hate it.

the attractive guys are just "mean" enough to get their hamster offended.

I didn't really like Mad Men but maybe it is worth a rewatch.
