Conservative Men: Thoughts On Housewives?

I was married for 12 years, my spouse was a housewife the entire time. I am again in a serious relationship and our expectation is the same after a certain period of time. I have found it to cause far less stress on a marriage, and plays to both sexes strengths. I wouldn't necessarily mind my spouse working, but honestly their are far more satisfying things to do than just a career. Volunteer work, education, or hobbies. Those can all provide the same rewarding experience without the stress. Less money just means better communication is required and more financial discipline.

I would say if you are interested in this for the purpose of finding a mate or man who is ok with you staying home, you should look for a conservative/traditional male who had a mom stay at home and who makes more than enough money to support his lifestyle now. My husband was preparing to get married/ buy a house when I met him and he was 20 years old. He had way more money than most people save for a down payment on a house before I even met him, he was looking for a wife.

Having a man whose mom stayed at home (and they have a good relationship) means he will be more likely to value a woman being home and see it as normal

I was brought up rather liberal, but now that I'm older, I can certainly see the value in children having a mother be there for them when they are young, in terms of providing a warm and nuturing home. And if a father can afford to let his wife take time off work, like part time, or full time, and maybe for a few years, I don't see the harm in that, so long as the husband and wife are a bit outgoing and cultivate friendships with others.

The whole notion of the 1950s housewife who pines by herself at home because she is so lonely and depressed - I'm not sure that is such a healthy image, necessarily. I suspect that image has turned a lot of women off from the idea of being stay at home mothers, actually. Women are taught to view staying at home as being some sort of horrendous prison, haha. But I wonder if it really has to be that way, if people are free to chose what they would honestly like.

My wife is a housewife and I work.

At the peak of our insanity we had three teens, one who was a train wreck, four dogs, a cat, and a house on two acres. She has worked a few times during that period once at the postal service, and for a while she managed an ice cream shop for friends. All of our kids worked at the ice cream shop and had chores at the house so it was an excellent opportunity for everyone.

I work and mange the retirement funds but she is aware of where it is and how to get it in the event I died. But she manages the day to day operations of the house and finances.

Why is easy, we wanted to raise our children not have daycare do it for us. We also had a lot going on that required our involvement; 4H, church, school, shooting events, and our personal hobbies.

Now the kids are off living their own lives and she takes care of me and a wiener dog, we just lost our hound, volunteers at the church and with big brothers and sisters. She also has friends she meets to exercises or swim with a couple hours a day. She also plays the piano and volunteers as a baby sister for friends when needed, she loves babies.

We want the flexibility to spend our time together when I am off and she often comes along on work trips so we can explore the area together.

We aren’t wealthy we made choices that were good for us, it isn’t for everyone but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m not politically conservative but I can say without doubt that I preferred things vastly more when my wife was a sahw

Not even the new car can make up for it

House wifing is a full time job and the recent state of my home shows it

A lot of millennial men are babies or are mad that they have to work for women and a society that doesn’t really give a shit about them

So they see woman in the industrial workforce as more or less agreeable

I think it's more traditional/conservative. Although, I grew up in what I would consider a very traditional, conservative household (Mormon, in Utah) and my mom worked. Not when I was young (younger than school age), but she worked at my elementary school for years after. My husband's mother worked and so did his father, but his father stayed home during the day and worked nights so one parent could be home. That being said, we (husband and I) definitely feel it's best for at least one parent to be home if there are children. In our case, it's me. My husband works 90+ hours a week and is on call at least four times a week, or over the weekend. One of us needs to be home or things would just fall apart! He literally can't take care of anything because he is always gone during business hours and can't step away to take care of anything outside work. He values what I do for our home because he can't do it and because he has almost no interest in doing it himself either lol (well, other than help raise our kids, obviously). I love staying home and have absolutely no desire to have an outside job. I just don't see how it would work with his schedule. So, in a sense, his career chose our more conservative life for us. It works for us and many in our situation. I would consider my husband to be quite conservative and myself to be an apathetic moderate.

I’m a SAHM and conservative. But I wasn’t always conservative. Even in my teens and my liberal years I planned to be a SAHM. I think a lot of it stemmed from the fact that both my parents worked and their stress levels had a huge impact on us kids. I remember wishing someone would cook dinner every night when I came home from school/practice and was starving and had hours of homework to do, but having to make my own. I don’t blame my parents- they worked hard! But I want my kids to have that security of knowing I’ll be there, that our home will be warm and welcoming. Being a SAHM means I can give 100% of my attention to the quality of life of my family.

My wife was a housewife while our three children were <5 and now works part time. She still does all the housewife-roles, cooking, cleaning etc.

I think it's definitely ideal, simply because it means there's home cooked meals every day for my children, chores get done in time, and the children have their mother present when they're at home. My two daughters are also very keenly learning to cook.

I'm not sure about being a housewife before having kids, but once you have them it's definitely ideal.

i'm not sure how you'd classify my husband and i. we're probably the most conservative of our liberal social circle - we've got leftie views on some things, but run our personal lives and home quite traditionally.

we live in an expensive city and are working on our nest egg, so it doesn't make sense for me to stop working right now when i'm making decent money. there just isn't that much to take care of at home when we don't have kids. saying that, though, i do work from home most of the time so that makes it easy for me to manage the household. my husband only really gets involved in domestic work when something is broken (eg he climbed up into the roof this weekend to fix the air conditioner, that sort of thing). because i do work and we have the means, i outsource quite a bit of the domestic work - i hire a cleaner to come around once a week, i order our groceries online, etc. i work smart, not hard.

once we have children the plan is for me to stay at home and manage that side of things. my husband does not want our kids to go into daycare, so i will probably stay home at least until they're in school. i don't think that i'll stop contributing financially however. i will be helping my husband run his business, and am currently working on starting my own passive income streams. i already manage our trading portfolio/investments and will continue running that after children come along.

i look forward to focusing on family life, but we both think it would be a waste for me to be "just" a SAHM.

I'm not currently married. While I think it would be nice to stay at home and work part-time at a small business, something like a cafe or florist, I would also be afraid of a scenario where my husband would be unable to work, e.g. if he loses is job or falls seriously ill. Plus because we are likely going to live in a very expensive city, I'm afraid it would be hard for both of us to retire on one person's income.
