Hi girls!
I want to keep this short but I have a feeling it's going to get long, I'm so so sorry. Also, just switched birth controls and feeling a little emotional. :/
I haven't been around because a lot has happened recently. I am hoping to seek the guidance of the ladies on here, especially those who lived with their partners before marriage.
Due to some financial and familial issues (and housing skyrocketing in my area), I offered my space for my boyfriend to move in. We've been in a relationship 1.5 years now.
I bought this apartment at a good price with the help of my mom many years ago, so I managed to escape the ridiculous prices that are around right now.
Anyway, from a rational standpoint, it is the best decision for both of us.
- It takes some burden off my expenses as well as his
- We see each other more because he lived far away
- it gives him cheaper rent and time to think about his direction in life
- He can pursue his masters if he wishes, rather than go back to work full-time
- He can save money and get his own place down the line (seems to be his biggest desire, but the market is just unaffordable atm)
There are cons though:
- My dad is here until he gets back on track with his job; he works from home and thus takes up the whole living room space. This means my boyfriend and i are pretty much crammed in my room until he moves out in August
- I don't feel ready at all, lol, i'm already slipping up and i feel the control freak in me putting up a fight
- I have never taken this step. In my "perfect world", I wanted to be married before sharing a space with my significant other. I would prefer to say "I live with my husband" rather than my boyfriend. It feels more secure that way, and I feel that it validates the premise of the relationship and prevents future problems. In fact, even last night, I was thinking about how nice it would be to just call him my husband.
- For him, however, he has expressed his concerns when watching his coworkers get married too quick without living together first. One recently got divorced after moving in with her and finding out she's an entitled slob. Fair enough. From a male Red Pill standpoint, he wins, hands down. A man deserves to know what it's like to live with the woman he's thinking about spending the rest of his life with. Thus, his premise is more rational than my own and I recognize that.
My perception of being against moving-in before marriage arose from my own experiences. In my social circle, the girls who are married didn't live with their partners before marriage. They're religious and they're very much against it. Everything is working out for them. Married in their 20s, one has had a kid, things seem relatively happy (I hope!).
The girls who did move in with their partners before marriage...all have failed relationships, including my sis (in the past--but now she's living with her bf again and it's not going that great..again).
However, i recognize that the women who moved in before marriage are quite feminist and perhaps bossy. There might have been issues rooted in the relationship to begin with. Right now the only person I know with a successful living situation is my mentor. She's living with her boyfriend and they have a very strong LTR, since her highschool days, and now she's approaching 30. It's definitely working for them. I don't know how much she cares about marriage, but their relationship and living situation seems great.
She's been REALLY supportive and told me I'm going to be happier with this decision, since I was upset that we lived far away from one another in the first place. My mentor said it would be an adjustment period, but that she personally can't imagine living her life without her boyfriend. I thought that was really sweet.
On the contrary, my closest girlfriends are HARDCORE judging me. I've lost so much "status" in their eyes. They're Christian so I somewhat expected it, but not to the extent that it happened last night. I actually feel "dirty" around them after discussing the move-in. I would love to say that they're just concerned for me, but right now I think they just see me making the wrong choice and whoring myself out or something. :/
They reinforced the hamster passive aggressively:
- "Oh, are you sure this is the right choice? Are you worried?"
- "[Name of chick in our social circle] said she'd never move in with a man until she's married, because she thinks men will take advantage of the situation and never marry the girl."
- "Are you worried that he'll get complacent?"
I basically got defensive, and flustered, and told them something along the lines of:
"I'm not living a fairytale life. This is reality, I can't have expectations like some princess waiting for everything to be perfect. This is the best decision for us. I love him and want to support him--supporting him means more than my personal ego or insecurities. If we live together, he'll get ahead, and he'll have more time to control the direction of his life."
They shut up and changed the subject. It was so awkward. It left me feeling really defeated after, and I know I've been "demoted" on the girl social status ladder lol.
I'm not going to lie. I'm bummed out about their reaction. I feel less of an equal in our group now. I also feel anxious, because the hamster they set off last night seems to be tough to shut up...
But seriously...I love him and want to support him. That should mean more to me than a ring and public social status right now. Marriage is a much larger decision for men than it is for women. I get that.
Living together so far: Honestly it's been really nice. We sort of knew what to expect since we were together a whole month in Maui (working, not just vacation time). Lots of gym time together. We also talk a lot about the future. He has some recurring pain issues from degenerative disc disease, so I've accompanied him to the swimming pool when I can. I've tried to give us some space during the day by working at the library instead (I work from home). I also try to cook breakfast and meals when I can--and I've tried to keep my anxieties about moving in together to a minimum. I reorganized a lot of stuff and I'm trying to keep the space as clean as possible, but I have to admit the closet is a bit of a disaster right now and it's asking for my attention. I have DEFINITELY caught myself being a know-it-all at times, there were a few cringey moments the last couple weeks...but nothing detrimental.
TLDR: Would love advice from ladies who lived with their partners before marriage, especially if you lived in very tight spaces together. Would also love advice regarding my friends...trying to let it go, but I didn't think I would be that hardcore judged :/
