Myth: A woman and man with identical jobs doing identical work earn different wages. The woman earns 77% of the man's wage because she is discriminated against for being female.

Fact: If you add up the salary of every woman with a full time job in America, then divide by the number of women; then add up the salary of every man with a full time job in America, then divide by the number of men, you get a bigger number for the average male salary. We're told the average woman salary is about 77% of the average male salary. I couldn't tell you if that's accurate.

Why is the woman number lower? Because (N1+N2...+NX)/X doesn't take a person's job into account. The number of male CEOs, top tier attorneys, computer tycoons, oil and gas tycoons, experienced engineers, PhD scientists, and..you get it...outnumbers the females in those fields. Even in decent-paying non-college educated fields, like being an electrician, plumber, machinist, or mechanic, men outnumber women. The number of female educators, administrative assistants, nurses, paralegals, and flight attendants exceeds the number of men in those fields.

Females work in lower paying job sectors than men, on the average. Feminists would have you believe that this is because the system is rigged against women from their first day of first grade, when teachers treat boys better, all the way to cigar-smoking fat cats in nice suits sitting in dark rooms discussing ways of keeping women from becoming CEOs. The real reason is that most women are more risk-adverse than most men. Back when I was an engineering major, we had quite a few women in the engineering school. 90% of them where majoring in chemical engineering. Why? Because they'd taken chemistry in high school. It was familiar to them. None of them wanted to jump into electrical engineering or aerospace engineering. That would risk getting bad grades by having to take 18 credit hours of completely unfamiliar subject matter their first semester of college.

My wife started college as a pre-med major, then decided to become a teacher instead. She says it's because she worked as a tutor one summer and fell in love with the idea of working with kids. The real reason is that majoring in biology is just the beginning. She'd have had to prepare for and take the MCATs, apply for med school, pass med school, do a residency, and really bust her ass. Or she could make straight A's throughout college, be done with school in 4 years, get a job in a field that was hurting for applicants at the time, that most people respect, and marry someone with a bigger salary. She chose the less risky path of least resistance. If the situation were reversed, I'd have done the exact opposite.

My econ professor, who also works for the FDIC, has said many times that the idea that women make less than men for equal work is simply not true.

The truth is, that men do make more than women, but it is not because of discrimination. It is because men typically invest in higher education at levels greater than women. Studies show that a man and woman with the same background (school, degree, experience) will make the same amount.

TL;DR Women love playing dat victim card.

The corrections you guys are giving aren't right.

For Americans under 30, the average woman earns more than the average man.
Men and women in the same job with the same education on average earn the same wage (this is just common sense: if you could pay women less and get away with it, all of these employers would aggressively seek to replace men with women)
The $.77 figure doesn't come from measuring salaries. It comes from measuring lifetime earnings, which is average hourly wage multiplied by hours worked over your lifetime. Why is there a difference? Because women on average work many fewer hours per year than men. If you account for this difference, the "wage gap" drops to $.95/$1. Understand how fucking insane the position of the White House is: it's a problem the people who work less aren't paid the same as people who work more and who do the same job.
The real difference in wages is between women who are or have been married and everybody else. These women spend many fewer hours working than everyone else and drop the number of hours worked and average salary for women. It's important to make the distinction between never married and single because a 40-year-old divorced woman with two kids counts as "single".

There are many reason's why a man might make more than a woman for the same job.

Lots of women take time off to raise children. So when they return to the work force, the have fallen behind.

Men are willing to work in dangerous places that women dare not go. Like Saudi Arabia. This gives a man a boost in pay. Also, men move the whole family for a better paying job elsewhere. While women might not take a job across the country because the husband might make more money.

Studies have shown that women don't ask for pay raises. While alpha male men will stand up to a boss and demand a raise.

So let's review. Women play it safe career wise. They take time off from careers to care for children. Women don't assert themselves and ask for raises. And what do they do. Go running to government to bail them out for the lousy decisions. Like they always do.

Women earn less ON AVERAGE because of the following:

1) Dropping out of the corporate career track to have kids, so they never become CEOs.

2) Not pursuing high-paying dangerous jobs like oil rig work, fishing, or electrical line work.

3) Not pursuing high-paying tech jobs.

No employer with a shred of sense would dare pay a woman less for the same work, and that has been the standard for many years.

All of this comes from my sociology professor a few years back, as well as the author of our textbook. None of this is because of a male-dominated employment landscape- it's because men have different priorities, and those priorities pay more.

The feminazis would have us all believe that women are paid unfairly... which is simply no longer the case. There's too much liability involved for an employer to dare pay unequally. The feminazis would also have you believe the woman answering the phones at a job site where men are at risk of being crushed or electrocuted deserve equal pay. I think not, and the economy works just fine by also thinking dangerous jobs warrant more pay.

I'm totally OK with the Equal Pay Act or whatever the fuck they call it.

Think about it - it is based on the premise that men and women are working side by side doing identical work. They're not gonna bring everyone's salary down to what women make. They're gonna bring it up to what men make. So that means I can put in the same amount of work/effort that a woman does, and my salary wouldn't change! It is a blessing in disguise: I can make the same amount of money for less work than what I do now, thus removing the incentive for me to work my ass off. This means at the end of the day I have more energy to pursue other things I am passionate about.
