Sometime in the 1930s, the U.S. service sector became 50% of the economy. In 1936, Dale Carnegie wrote “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” helping to set off a wave of social skill-oriented self help books. (Stephen Covey, the author of the 1989 book “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” derided these books as fifty years of “quick fixes” and “social band-aids.”) Service sector jobs presumably require more social skills than agricultural or manufacturing sector jobs. In a service-oriented world, social skills and extroversion get you jobs.

Women know this, and it would be totally reasonable for them to prefer men who have these skills. How much of the supposedly “irrational” “hypergamous” “evolutionary-psychology” female preference for "dominant" men is just a rational preference for socially skilled men who can compete in the modern labor market?
